A quasilinear wave with a supersonic shock in a weak solution interrupting the classical development

We study the Cauchy problem for classical and weak shock-forming solutions to a model quasilinear wave equation in $1+1$ dimensions arising from a convenient choice of $C^{\infty}$ initial data, which allows us to solve the equation using elementary arguments. The simplicity of our model allows us to succinctly illustrate various phenomena of geometric and analytic significance tied to shocks, which we view as a prototype for phenomena that can occur in more general quasilinear hyperbolic PDE solutions. Our Cauchy problem admits a classical solution that blows up in finite time. The classical solution is defined in a largest possible globally hyperbolic region called a maximal globally hyperbolic development (MGHD), and its properties are tied to the intrinsic Lorentzian geometry of the equation and solution. The boundary of the MGHD contains an initial singularity, a singular boundary along which the solution's second derivatives blow up (the solution and its first derivatives remain bounded), and a Cauchy horizon. Our main results provide the first example of a provably unique MGHD for a shock-forming quasilinear wave equation solution; it is provably unique because its boundary has a favorable global structure that we precisely describe. We also prove that for the same $C^{\infty}$ initial data, the Cauchy problem admits a second kind of solution: a unique global weak entropy solution that has a shock curve separating two smooth regions. Of particular interest is our proof that the classical and weak solutions agree before the shock but differ in a region to the future of the first singularity where both solutions are defined.

Nonlinear radiation gauge for near Kerr spacetimes

In this paper, we introduce and explore the properties of a new gauge choice for the vacuum Einstein equation inspired by the ingoing and outgoing radiation gauges (IRG, ORG) for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation introduced by Chrzanowski in his work on metric reconstruction [DOI:10.1103/PhysRevD.11.2042] on the Kerr background. It has been shown by Price, Shankar and Whiting [arXiv:gr-qc/0611070] that the IRG/ORG are consistent gauges for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation on Petrov type II backgrounds. In [arXiv:1903.03859], the ORG was used in proving linearized stability for the Kerr spacetime, and the new non-linear radiation gauge introduced here is a direct generalization of that gauge condition, and is intended to be used to study the stability of Kerr black holes under the evolution generated by the vacuum Einstein equation.

Global stability of spacetimes with supersymmetric compactifications

This paper proves the stability, with respect to the evolution determined by the vacuum Einstein equations, of the Cartesian product of high-dimensional Minkowski space with a compact, Ricci-flat Riemannian manifold that admits a spin structure and a nonzero parallel spinor. Such a product includes the example of Calabi-Yau and other special holonomy compactifications, which play a central role in supergravity and string theory. The stability proved in this paper provides a counter example to an instability argument by Penrose.

Stability for linearized gravity on the Kerr spacetime

In this paper we prove integrated energy and pointwise decay estimates for solutions of the vacuum linearized Einstein equation on the domain of outer communication of the Kerr black hole spacetime. The estimates are valid for the full subextreme range of Kerr black holes, provided integrated energy estimates for the Teukolsky equation hold. For slowly rotating Kerr backgrounds, such estimates are known to hold, due to the work of one of the authors. The results in this paper thus provide the first stability results for linearized gravity on the Kerr background, in the slowly rotating case, and reduce the linearized stability problem for the full subextreme range to proving integrated energy estimates for the Teukolsky equation. This constitutes an essential step towards a proof of the black hole stability conjecture, i.e. the statement that the Kerr family is dynamically stable, one of the central open problems in general relativity.

Morawetz estimate for linearized gravity in Schwarzschild

The equations governing the perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric satisfy the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli-Moncrief system. Applying the technique introduced in [2], we prove an integrated local energy decay estimate for both the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations. In these proofs, we use some constants that are computed numerically. Furthermore, we make use of the $r^p$ hierarchy estimates [13, 32] to prove that both the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli variables decay as $t^{-\frac{3}{2}}$ in fixed regions of $r$.

Hidden symmetries and decay for the Vlasov equation on the Kerr spacetime

This paper proves the existence of a bounded energy and integrated energy decay for solutions of the massless Vlasov equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr spacetime. This combines methods previously developed to prove similar results for the wave equation on the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr spacetime with recent work applying the vector-field method to the relativistic Vlasov equation.

Geometry of black hole spacetimes

These notes, based on lectures given at the summer school on Asymptotic Analysis in General Relativity, collect material on the Einstein equations, the geometry of black hole spacetimes, and the analysis of fields on black hole backgrounds. The Kerr model of a rotating black hole in vacuum is expected to be unique and stable. The problem of proving these fundamental facts provides the background for the material presented in these notes. Among the many topics which are relevant for the uniqueness and stability problems are the theory of fields on black hole spacetimes, in particular for gravitational perturbations of the Kerr black hole, and more generally, the study of nonlinear field equations in the presence of trapping. The study of these questions requires tools from several different fields, including Lorentzian geometry, hyperbolic differential equations and spin geometry, which are all relevant to the black hole stability problem.

Decay of solutions to the Maxwell equation on the Schwarzschild background

A new Morawetz or integrated local energy decay estimate for Maxwell test fields on the exterior of a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime is proved. The proof makes use of a new superenergy tensor $H_{ab}$ defined in terms of the Maxwell field and its first derivatives. The superenergy tensor, although not conserved, yields a conserved higher order energy current $H_{ab} (\partial_t)^b$. The tensor $H_{ab}$ vanishes for the static Coulomb field, and the Morawetz estimate proved here therefore yields integrated decay for the Maxwell field to the Coulomb solution on the Schwarzschild exterior.

Hidden symmetries and decay for the wave equation on the Kerr spacetime

Energy and decay estimates for the wave equation on the exterior region of slowly rotating Kerr spacetimes are proved. The method used is a generalization of the vector-field method, which allows the use of higher-order symmetry operators. In particular, our method makes use of the second-order Carter operator, which is a hidden symmetry in the sense that it does not correspond to a Killing symmetry of the spacetime.

Uniform energy bound and asymptotics for the Maxwell field on a slowly rotating Kerr black hole exterior

We consider the Maxwell equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For this system, we prove the boundedness of a positive definite energy on each hypersurface of constant $t$. We also prove the convergence of each solution to a stationary Coulomb solution. We separate a general solution into the charged, Coulomb part and the uncharged part. Convergence to the Coulomb solutions follows from the fact that the uncharged part satisfies a Morawetz estimate, i.e. that a spatially localised energy density is integrable in time. For the unchanged part, we study both the full Maxwell equation and the Fackerell-Ipser equation for one component. To treat the Fackerell-Ipser equation, we use a Fourier transform in $t$. For the Fackerell-Ipser equation, we prove a refined Morawetz estimate that controls 3/2 derivatives with no loss near the orbiting null geodesics.

Spin geometry and conservation laws in the Kerr spacetime

In this paper we will review some facts, both classical and recent, concerning the geometry and analysis of the Kerr and related black hole spacetimes. This includes the analysis of test fields on these spacetimes. Central to our analysis is the existence of a valence $(2,0)$ Killing spinor, which we use to construct symmetry operators and conserved currents as well as a new energy momentum tensor for the Maxwell test fields on a class of spacetimes containing the Kerr spacetime. We then outline how this new energy momentum tensor can be used to obtain decay estimated for Maxwell test fields. An important motivation for this work is the black hole stability problem, where fields with non-zero spin present interesting new challenges. The main tool in the analysis is the 2-spinor calculus, and for completeness we introduce its main features.

Second order symmetry operators

Using systematic calculations in spinor language, we obtain simple descriptions of the second order symmetry operators for the conformal wave equation, the Dirac-Weyl equation and the Maxwell equation on a curved four dimensional Lorentzian manifold. The conditions for existence of symmetry operators for the different equations are seen to be related. Computer algebra tools have been developed and used to systematically reduce the equations to a form which allows geometrical interpretation.

A decay estimate for a wave equation with trapping and a complex potential

In this brief note, we consider a wave equation that has both trapping and a complex potential. For this problem, we prove a uniform bound on the energy and a Morawetz (or integrated local energy decay) estimate. The equation is a model problem for certain scalar equations appearing in the Maxwell and linearised Einstein systems on the exterior of a rotating black hole.

Uniform Decay of Local Energy and the Semi-Linear Wave Equation on Schwarzchild Space

We provide a uniform decay estimate of Morawetz type for the local energy of general solutions to the inhomogeneous wave equation on a Schwarzchild background. This estimate is both uniform in space and time, so in particular it implies a uniform bound on the sup norm of solutions which can be given in terms of certain inverse powers of the radial and advanced/retarded time coordinate variables. As a model application, we show these estimates give a very simple proof small amplitude scattering for nonlinear scalar fields with higher than cubic interactions.
