The family of ternary cyclotomic polynomials with one free prime

A cyclotomic polynomial Φ_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd primes. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Here we establish some results and formulate some conjectures regarding the coefficients appearing in the polynomial family Φ_{pqr}(x) with p<q<r, p and q fixed and r a free prime.

Coefficient convexity of divisors of x^n-1

We say a polynomial f having integer coefficients is strongly coefficient convex if the set of coefficients of f consists of consecutive integers only. We establish various results suggesting that the divisors of x^n-1 with integer coefficients have the tendency to be strongly coefficient convex and have small coefficients. The case where n=p^2*q with p and q primes is studied in detail.

Counting numbers in multiplicative sets: Landau versus Ramanujan

A set S of integers is said to be multiplicative if for every pair m and n of coprime integers we have that mn is in S iff both m and n are in S. Both Landau and Ramanujan gave approximations to S(x), the number of n<=x that are in S, for specific choices of S. The asymptotical precision of their respective approaches are being compared and related to Euler-Kronecker constants, a generalization of Euler's constant gamma=0.57721566.... This paper claims little originality, its aim is to give a survey on the literature related to this theme with an emphasis on the contributions of the author (and his coauthors).

Principal forms X^2 + nY^2 representing many integers

In 1966, Shanks and Schmid investigated the asymptotic behavior of the number of positive integers less than or equal to x which are represented by the quadratic form X^2+nY^2. Based on some numerical computations, they observed that the constant occurring in the main term appears to be the largest for n=2. In this paper, we prove that in fact this constant is unbounded as n runs through positive integers with a fixed number of prime divisors.

Moser's mathemagical work on the equation 1^k+2^k+...+(m-1)^k=m^k

If the equation of the title has an integer solution with k>=2, then m>10^{10^6}. Leo Moser showed this in 1953 by amazingly elementary methods. With the hindsight of more than 50 years his proof can be somewhat simplified. We give a further proof showing that Moser's result can be derived from a von Staudt-Clausen type theorem. Based on more recent developments concerning this equation, we derive a new result using the divisibility properties of numbers in the sequence 2^{2e+1}+1, e=0,1,2,..... In the final section we show that certain Erdos-Moser type equations arising in a recent paper of Kellner can be solved completely.

A top hat for Moser's four mathemagical rabbits

If the equation 1^k+2^k+...+(m-2)^k+(m-1)^k=m^k has an integer solution with k>1, then m>10^{10^6}. Leo Moser showed this in 1953 by remarkably elementary methods. His proof rests on four identities he derives separately. It is shown here that Moser's result can be derived from a von Staudt-Clausen type theorem (an easy proof of which is also presented here). In this approach the four identities can be derived uniformly. The mathematical arguments used in the proofs were already available during the lifetime of Lagrange (1736-1813).

On a Class of Ternary Inclusion-Exclusion Polynomials

A ternary inclusion-exclusion polynomial is a polynomial of the form \[ Q_{p,q,r}=\frac{(z^{pqr}-1)(z^p-1)(z^q-1)(z^r-1)} {(z^{pq}-1)(z^{qr}-1)(z^{rp}-1)(z-1)}, \] where $p$, $q$, and $r$ are integers $\ge3$ and relatively prime in pairs. This class of polynomials contains, as its principle subclass, the ternary cyclotomic polynomials corresponding to restricting $p$, $q$, and $r$ to be distinct odd prime numbers. Our object here is to continue the investigation of the relationship between the coefficients of $Q_{p,q,r}$ and $Q_{p,q,s}$, with $r\equiv s\pmod{pq}$. More specifically, we consider the case where $1\le s<\max(p,q)<r$, and obtain a recursive estimate for the function $A(p,q,r)$--the function that gives the maximum of the absolute values of the coefficients of $Q_{p,q,r}$. A simple corollary of our main result is the following absolute estimate. If $s\ge1$ and $r\equiv\pm s\pmod{pq}$, then $A(p,q,r)\le s$.

Some Diophantine equations from finite group theory: $Φ_m(x)=2p^n-1$

We show that the equation in the title (with $Φ_m$ the $m$th cyclotomic polynomial) has no integer solution with $n\ge 1$ in the cases $(m,p)=(15,41), (15,5581),(10,271)$. These equations arise in a recent group theoretical investigation by Z. Akhlaghi, M. Khatami and B. Khosravi.

The Erdős--Moser equation $1^k+2^k+...+(m-1)^k=m^k$ revisited using continued fractions

If the equation of the title has an integer solution with $k\ge2$, then $m>10^{9.3\cdot10^6}$. This was the current best result and proved using a method due to L. Moser (1953). This approach cannot be improved to reach the benchmark $m>10^{10^7}$. Here we achieve $m>10^{10^9}$ by showing that $2k/(2m-3)$ is a convergent of $\log2$ and making an extensive continued fraction digits calculation of $(\log2)/N$, with $N$ an appropriate integer. This method is very different from that of Moser. Indeed, our result seems to give one of very few instances where a large scale computation of a numerical constant has an application.

Neighboring ternary cyclotomic coefficients differ by at most one

A cyclotomic polynomial Phi_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd prime factors. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Eli Leher showed in 2007 that neighboring ternary cyclotomic coefficients differ by at most four. We show that, in fact, they differ by at most one. Consequently, the set of coefficients occurring in a ternary cyclotomic polynomial consists of consecutive integers. As an application we reprove in a simpler way a result of Bachman from 2004 on ternary cyclotomic polynomials with an optimally large set of coefficients.

Ternary cyclotomic polynomials having a large coefficient

Let $Φ_n(x)$ denote the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial. In 1968 Sister Marion Beiter conjectured that $a_n(k)$, the coefficient of $x^k$ in $Φ_n(x)$, satisfies $|a_n(k)|\le (p+1)/2$ in case $n=pqr$ with $p 0$ there exist infinitely many triples $(p_j,q_j,r_j)$ with $p_1 (2/3-ε)p_j$ for $j\ge 1$.

Value distribution of cyclotomic polynomial coefficients

Let a_n(k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial Phi_n(x). As n ranges over the integers, a_n(k) assumes only finitely many values. For any such value v we determine the density of integers n such that a_n(k)=v. Also we study the average of the a_n(k). We derive analogous results for the kth Taylor coefficient of 1/Phi_n(x) (taken around x=0), the kth coefficient of the nth reciprocal cyclotomic polynomial. We formulate various open problems.

Counting RSA-integers

In the RSA cryptosystem integers of the form n=p.q with p and q primes of comparable size (`RSA-integers') play an important role. It is a folklore result of cryptographers that C_r(x), the number of integers n<=x that are of the form n=pq with p and q primes such that p 1 asymptotically equal to c_r*x*log^{-2}x for some constant c_r>0. Here we prove this and show that c_r=2log r.

Values of coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials II

Let a(n,k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial. The first two authors showed in part I that if m is a prime power and n and k range over the non-negative integers, then a(mn,k) assumes every integer value. Here this result is extended to the case where m is arbitrary. The proof use some properties of reciprocal cyclotomic polynomials (see arXiv:0709.1570).

The Nicolas and Robin inequalities with sums of two squares

In 1984, G. Robin proved that the Riemann hypothesis is true if and only if the Robin inequality $σ(n) 5040$, where $σ(n)$ is the sum of divisors function, and $γ$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant. We exhibit a broad class of subsets $\cS$ of the natural numbers such that the Robin inequality holds for all but finitely many $n\in\cS$. As a special case, we determine the finitely many numbers of the form $n=a^2+b^2$ that do not satisfy the Robin inequality. In fact, we prove our assertions with the Nicolas inequality $n/ϕ(n) 1$ our results for the Robin inequality follow at once.

Reciprocal cyclotomic polynomials

Let $Ψ_n(x)$ be the monic polynomial having precisely all non-primitive $n$th roots of unity as its simple zeros. One has $Ψ_n(x)=(x^n-1)/Φ_n(x)$, with $Φ_n(x)$ the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial. The coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$ are integers that like the coefficients of $Φ_n(x)$ tend to be surprisingly small in absolute value, e.g. for $n<561$ all coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$ are $\le 1$ in absolute value. We establish various properties of the coefficients of $Ψ_n(x)$.

On primes in arithmetic progression having a prescribed primitive root. II

Let a and f be coprime positive integers. Let g be an integer. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) it follows by a result of H.W. Lenstra that the set of primes p such that p=a(mod f) and g is a primitive root modulo p has a natural density. In this note this density is explicitly evaluated with an Euler product as result.

Values of the Euler phi function not divisible by a prescribed odd prime

Let phi denote Euler's phi function. For a fixed odd prime we give an asymptotic series expansion in the sense of Poincare for the number E_q(x) of n<=x such that q does not divide phi(n). Thereby we improve on a recent theorem of B.K. Spearman and K.S. Williams [Ark. Mat. 44 (2006), 166-181]. Furthermore we resolve, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which of two approximations to E_q(x) is asymptotically superior using recent results of Y. Ihara on the Euler-Kronecker constant of a number field.
