Adiabatic landscape and optimal paths in ergodic systems

Whether one is interested in quantum state preparation or in the design of efficient heat engines, adiabatic (reversible) transformations play a pivotal role in minimizing computational complexity and energy losses. Understanding the structure of these transformations and identifying the systems for which such transformations can be performed efficiently and quickly is therefore of primary importance. In this paper we focus on finding optimal paths in the space of couplings controlling the system's Hamiltonian. More specifically, starting from a local Hamiltonian we analyze directions in the space of couplings along which adiabatic transformations can be accurately generated by local operators, which are both realizable in experiments and easy to simulate numerically. We consider a non-integrable 1D Ising model parametrized by two independent couplings, corresponding to longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields. We find regions in the space of couplings characterized by a very strong anisotropy of the variational adiabatic gauge potential (AGP), generating the adiabatic transformations, which allows us to define optimal adiabatic paths. We find that these paths generally terminate at singular points characterized by extensive degeneracies in the energy spectrum, splitting the parameter space into adiabatically disconnected regions. The anisotropy follows from singularities in the AGP, and we identify special robust weakly-thermalizing and non-absorbing many-body "dark" states which are annihilated by the singular part of the AGP and show that their existence extends deep into the ergodic regime.

Maximum velocity quantum circuits

We consider the long-time limit of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in two classes of quantum lattice models with time evolution governed by local unitary quantum circuits and maximal butterfly velocity $v_{B} = 1$. Using a transfer matrix approach, we present analytic results for the long-time value of the OTOC on and inside the light cone. First, we consider `dual-unitary' circuits with various levels of ergodicity, including the integrable and non-integrable kicked Ising model, where we show exponential decay away from the light cone and relate both the decay rate and the long-time value to those of the correlation functions. Second, we consider a class of kicked XY models similar to the integrable kicked Ising model, again satisfying $v_{B}=1$, highlighting that maximal butterfly velocity is not exclusive to dual-unitary circuits.

Integrability and dark states in an anisotropic central spin model

Central spin models describe a variety of quantum systems in which a spin-1/2 qubit interacts with a bath of surrounding spins, as realized in quantum dots and defect centers in diamond. We show that the fully anisotropic central spin Hamiltonian with (XX) Heisenberg interactions is integrable. Building on the class of integrable Richardson-Gaudin models, we derive an extensive set of conserved quantities and obtain the exact eigenstates using the Bethe ansatz. These states divide into two exponentially large classes: bright states, where the qubit is entangled with the bath, and dark states, where it is not. We discuss how dark states limit qubit-assisted spin bath polarization and provide a robust long-lived quantum memory for qubit states.

Floquet-engineering counterdiabatic protocols in quantum many-body systems

Counterdiabatic (CD) driving presents a way of generating adiabatic dynamics at arbitrary pace, where excitations due to non-adiabaticity are exactly compensated by adding an auxiliary driving term to the Hamiltonian. While this CD term is theoretically known and given by the adiabatic gauge potential, obtaining and implementing this potential in many-body systems is a formidable task, requiring knowledge of the spectral properties of the instantaneous Hamiltonians and control of highly nonlocal multibody interactions. We show how an approximate gauge potential can be systematically built up as a series of nested commutators, remaining well-defined in the thermodynamic limit. Furthermore, the resulting CD driving protocols can be realized up to arbitrary order without leaving the available control space using tools from periodically-driven (Floquet) systems. This is illustrated on few- and many-body quantum systems, where the resulting Floquet protocols significantly suppress dissipation and provide a drastic increase in fidelity.

Integrable spin-1/2 Richardson-Gaudin XYZ models in an arbitrary magnetic field

We establish the most general class of spin-1/2 integrable Richardson-Gaudin models including an arbitrary magnetic field, returning a fully anisotropic (XYZ) model. The restriction to spin-1/2 relaxes the usual integrability constraints, allowing for a general solution where the couplings between spins lack the usual antisymmetric properties of Richardson-Gaudin models. The full set of conserved charges are constructed explicitly and shown to satisfy a set of quadratic equations, allowing for the numerical treatment of a fully anisotropic central spin in an external magnetic field. While this approach does not provide expressions for the exact eigenstates, it allows their eigenvalues to be obtained, and expectation values of local observables can then be calculated from the Hellmann-Feynman theorem.

Something interacting and solvable in 1d

We present a two-parameter family of exactly solvable quantum many-body systems in one spatial dimension containing the Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons as a particular case. The principal building block of this construction is the previously-introduced (arXiv:1712.09375) family of two-particle scattering matrices. We discuss an $SL(2)$ transformation connecting the models within this family and make a correspondence with generalized point interactions. The Bethe equations for the ground state are discussed with a special emphasis on "non-interacting modes" connected by the modular subgroup of $SL(2)$. The bound state solutions are discussed and are conjectured to follow some correlated version of the string hypothesis. The excitation spectrum of the new models in this family is derived in analogy to the Lieb-Liniger model and we show that for certain choices of parameters a spectrum inversion occurs such that the Umklapp solutions become the new ground state.

Richardson-Gaudin models and broken integrability

This thesis presents an introduction to the class of Richardson-Gaudin integrable models, with special focus on the Bethe ansatz wave function, and investigates ways of applying the properties of Richardson-Gaudin models both in and out of integrability. A framework is outlined for the numerical and theoretical treatment of these systems, exposing a duality allowing the Bethe equations to be solved numerically. This is extended to the calculation of inner products and correlation functions. Using this framework, the influence of particle exchange on the Bethe ansatz is discussed, after which it is shown how the Bethe ansatz is able to accurately model wave functions of non-integrable models in two different settings. First, a variational approach is outlined for stationary models where integrability-breaking perturbations are explicitly introduced. Second, an alternative way of breaking integrability is through the introduction of dynamics and periodic driving, where it is shown how integrability can be used to model the resulting Floquet many-body resonances. Throughout this work, it is shown how the clear-cut structure and relatively large freedom in Richardson-Gaudin models makes them ideal for an investigation of the general principles of integrability, as well as being a perfect testing ground for the development of new quantum many-body techniques beyond integrability.

Spin polarization through Floquet resonances in a driven central spin model

Adiabatically varying the driving frequency of a periodically-driven many-body quantum system can induce controlled transitions between resonant eigenstates of the time-averaged Hamiltonian, corresponding to adiabatic transitions in the Floquet spectrum and presenting a general tool in quantum many-body control. Using the central spin model as an application, we show how such controlled driving processes can lead to a polarization-based decoupling of the central spin from its decoherence-inducing environment at resonance. While it is generally impossible to obtain the exact Floquet Hamiltonian in driven interacting systems, we exploit the integrability of the central spin model to show how techniques from quantum quenches can be used to explicitly construct the Floquet Hamiltonian in a restricted many-body basis and model Floquet resonances.

Integrability and duality in spin chains

We construct a new, two-parametric family of integrable models and reveal their underlying duality symmetry. A modular subgroup of this duality is shown to connect non-interacting modes of different systems. We apply the new solution and duality to a Richardson-Gaudin model and generate a novel integrable system termed the $s$-$d$ wave Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev interacting chain, interpolating $s$- and $d$- wave superconductivity. The phase diagram of this model has a topological phase transition that can be connected to the duality, where the occupancy of the non-interacting mode serves as a topological order parameter.

A variational method for integrability-breaking Richardson-Gaudin models

We present a variational method for approximating the ground state of spin models close to (Richardson-Gaudin) integrability. This is done by variationally optimizing eigenstates of integrable Richardson-Gaudin models, where the toolbox of integrability allows for an efficient evaluation and minimization of the energy functional. The method is shown to return exact results for integrable models and improve substantially on perturbation theory for models close to integrability. For large integrability-breaking interactions, it is shown how (avoided) level crossings necessitate the use of excited states of integrable Hamiltonians in order to accurately describe the ground states of general non-integrable models.

Richardson-Gaudin Configuration-Interaction for nuclear pairing correlations

Background: The nuclear many-body system is a strongly correlated quantum system, posing serious challenges for perturbative approaches starting from uncorrelated reference states. The last decade has witnessed considerable progress in the accurate treatment of pairing correlations, one of the major components in medium-sized nuclei, reaching accuracies below the 1% level of the correlation energy. Purpose: Development of a quantum many-body method for pairing correlations that is (a) competitive in the 1% error range, and (b) can be systematically improved with a fast (exponential) convergence rate. Method: The present paper capitalizes upon ideas from Richardson-Gaudin integrability. The proposed method is a two-step approach. The first step consists of the optimization of a Richardson-Gaudin ground state as variational trial state. At the second step, the complete set of excited states on top of this Richardson-Gaudin ground state is used as an optimal basis for a Configuration Interaction method in an increasingly large effective Hilbert space. Results: The performance of the variational Richardson-Gaudin (varRG) and Richardson-Gaudin Configuration Interaction (RGCI) method is benchmarked against exact results using an effective $G$-matrix interaction for the Sn region. The varRG already reaches accuracies around the 1% level of the correlation energies, and the RGCI step sees an additional improvement scaling exponentially with the size of the effective Hilbert space. Conclusions: The Richardson-Gaudin models of integrability provide an optimized complete basis set for pairing correlations.

Inner products in integrable Richardson-Gaudin models

We present the inner products of eigenstates in integrable Richardson-Gaudin models from two different perspectives and derive two classes of Gaudin-like determinant expressions for such inner products. The requirement that one of the states is on-shell arises naturally by demanding that a state has a dual representation. By implicitly combining these different representations, inner products can be recast as domain wall boundary partition functions. The structure of all involved matrices in terms of Cauchy matrices is made explicit and used to show how one of the classes returns the Slavnov determinant formula. This framework provides a further connection between two different approaches for integrable models, one in which everything is expressed in terms of rapidities satisfying Bethe equations, and one in which everything is expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of conserved charges, satisfying quadratic equations.

Breaking the integrability of the Heisenberg model through periodic driving

We study the fate of interacting quantum systems which are periodically driven by switching back and forth between two integrable Hamiltonians. This provides an unconventional and tunable way of breaking integrability, in the sense that the stroboscopic time evolution will generally be described by a Floquet Hamiltonian which progressively becomes less integrable as the driving frequency is reduced. Here, we exemplify this idea in spin chains subjected to periodic switching between two integrable anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonians. We distinguish the integrability-breaking effects of resonant interactions and perturbative (local) interactions, and illustrate these by contrasting different measures of energy in Floquet states and through a study of level spacing statistics. This scenario is argued to be representative for general driven interacting integrable systems.

Read-Green resonances in a topological superconductor coupled to a bath

We study a topological superconductor capable of exchanging particles with an environment. This additional interaction breaks particle-number symmetry and can be modelled by means of an integrable Hamiltonian, building on the class of Richardson-Gaudin pairing models. The isolated system supports zero-energy modes at a topological phase transition, which disappear when allowing for particle exchange with an environment. However, it is shown from the exact solution that these still play an important role in system-environment particle exchange, which can be observed through resonances in low-energy and -momentum level occupations. These fluctuations signal topologically protected Read-Green points and cannot be observed within traditional mean-field theory.

Maximum Probability Domains for Hubbard Models

The theory of Maximum Probability Domains (MPDs) is formulated for the Hubbard model in terms of projection operators and generating functions for both exact eigenstates as well as Slater determinants. A fast MPD analysis procedure is proposed, which is subsequently used to analyse numerical results for the Hubbard model. It is shown that the essential physics behind the considered Hubbard models can be exposed using MPDs. Furthermore, the MPDs appear to be in line with what is expected from Valence Bond Theory-based knowledge.

Eigenvalue-based determinants for scalar products and form factors in Richardson-Gaudin integrable models coupled to a bosonic mode

Starting from integrable $su(2)$ (quasi-)spin Richardson-Gaudin XXZ models we derive several properties of integrable spin models coupled to a bosonic mode. We focus on the Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin models and the two-channel $(p+ip)$-wave pairing Hamiltonian. The pseudo-deformation of the underlying $su(2)$ algebra is here introduced as a way to obtain these models in the contraction limit of different Richardson-Gaudin models. This allows for the construction of the full set of conserved charges, the Bethe Ansatz state, and the resulting Richardson-Gaudin equations. For these models an alternative and simpler set of quadratic equations can be found in terms of the eigenvalues of the conserved charges. Furthermore, the recently proposed eigenvalue-based determinant expressions for the overlaps and form factors of local operators are extended to these models, linking the results previously presented for the Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin models with the general results for Richardson-Gaudin XXZ models.

An eigenvalue-based method and determinant representations for general integrable XXZ Richardson-Gaudin models

We propose an extension of the numerical approach for integrable Richardson-Gaudin models based on a new set of eigenvalue-based variables. Starting solely from the Gaudin algebra, the approach is generalized towards the full class of XXZ Richardson-Gaudin models. This allows for a fast and robust numerical determination of the spectral properties of these models, avoiding the singularities usually arising at the so-called singular points. We also provide different determinant expressions for the normalization of the Bethe Ansatz states and form factors of local spin operators, opening up possibilities for the study of larger systems, both integrable and non-integrable. These expressions can be written in terms of the new set of variables and generalize the results previously obtained for rational Richardson-Gaudin models and Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin models. Remarkably, these results are independent of the explicit parametrization of the Gaudin algebra, exposing a universality in the properties of Richardson-Gaudin integrable systems deeply linked to the underlying algebraic structure.

The Dicke model as the contraction limit of a pseudo-deformed Richardson-Gaudin model

The Dicke model is derived in the contraction limit of a pseudo-deformation of the quasispin algebra in the su(2)-based Richardson-Gaudin models. Likewise, the integrability of the Dicke model is established by constructing the full set of conserved charges, the form of the Bethe Ansatz state, and the associated Richardson-Gaudin equations. Thanks to the formulation in terms of the pseudo-deformation, the connection from the su(2)-based Richardson-Gaudin model towards the Dicke model can be performed adiabatically.
