Towards relational foundations for spacetime quantum physics

Rovelli's relational interpretation of quantum mechanics tells us that the description of a system in the formalism of quantum mechanics is not an absolute, but it is relative to the observer itself. The interpretation goes further and proposes a set of axioms. In standard non relational language, one of them states that an observer can only retrieve finite amount information from a system by means of measurement. Our contribution starts with the observation that quantum mechanics, i.e. quantum field theory (QFT) in dimension 1, radically differs from QFT in higher dimensions. In higher dimensions boundary data (or initial data) cannot be specified by means of finitely many measurements. This calls for a notion of measuring scale, which we provide. At a given measuring scale the observer has partial information about the system. Our notion of measuring scale generalizes the one implicitly used in Wilsonian QFT, where at each measuring scale there are effective theories, which may be corrected, and if the theory turns out to be renormalizable the mentioned corrections converge to determine a completely corrected (or renormalized) theory at the given measuring scale. The notion of a measuring scale is the cornerstone of Wilsonian QFT. This notion tells us that we are not describing a system from an absolute perspective. An effective theory at that scale describes the system with respect to the observer, which may retrieve information from the system by means of measurement in a specific way determined by our notion of measuring scale. We claim that a relational interpretation of quantum physics for spacetimes of dimension greater than 1 is Wilsonian.

Unmasking the physical information inherent to interstellar spectral line profiles with Machine Learning. I. Application of LTE to HCN and HNC transitions

Physical and chemical conditions (kinetic temperature, volume density, molecular composition) of interstellar clouds are inherent in their mm-submm line spectra, making spectral line profiles powerful diagnostics of source conditions. We introduce a novel bottom-up approach employing Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to directly infer physical conditions from line profiles without using radiative transfer equations. We simulated HCN and HNC emission under representative dense molecular cloud and star-forming region conditions across five rotational transitions (J=1-0 to J=5-4) within 30-500 GHz. The generated data cloud was parameterized using line intensities and widths to infer the physical conditions of the analyzed regions. Three ML algorithms were trained, tested, and compared to unravel the excitation conditions of HCN and HNC and their abundance ratio. ML results obtained with two spectral lines, one for each isomer, were compared with a Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) analysis for the cold source R CrA IRS 7B, yielding excitation temperatures and relative abundances in agreement with LTE. The optimized pipeline (training, testing, and prediction) can predict interstellar cloud properties from line profile inputs at lower computational cost than traditional methods. This work represents the first mapping of spectral line profiles to physical conditions by charting isomer abundance ratios and excitation temperatures. Our bottom-up approach, based on simulated and semiempirical spectra, offers a new tool to interpret line observations and estimate interstellar conditions using ML methods.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations for the two loop massless quark propagator

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs) yield the gauge dependence of correlation functions within the class of linear covariant gauges. We derive the LKFT for the quark propagator and explicitly evaluate it up to the two loop level in the chiral limit. Although the number of diagrams to be evaluated is significantly larger than with the conventional computational scheme, the diagrams are simpler in nature, thereby leading to a considerably faster evaluation of the gauge dependent part than naively expected. Finally, we also resum the LKFT generated terms and compare our results with earlier work in the literature.

Homotopy data as part of the lattice field: A first study

Fields exhibit a variety of topological properties, like different topological charges, when field space in the continuum is composed by more than one topological sector. Lattice treatments usually encounter difficulties describing those properties. In this work, we show that by augmenting the usual lattice fields to include extra variables describing local topological information (more precisely, regarding homotopy), the topology of the space of fields in the continuum is faithfully reproduced in the lattice. We apply this extended lattice formulation to some simple models with non-trivial topological charges, and we study their properties both analytically and via Monte Carlo simulations.

Exploiting the scheme dependence of the renormalization group improvement in infrared Yang-Mills theory

Within the refined Gribov-Zwanziger scenario for four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge, a gluon mass term is generated from the restriction of the gauge field configurations to the first Gribov region. Tissier and Wschebor have pointed out that simply adding a gluon mass term to the usual Faddeev-Popov action yields one-loop renormalization group improved gluon and ghost propagators which are in good agreement with the lattice data even in the infrared regime. In this work, we extend their analysis to several alternative renormalization schemes and show how the renormalization scheme dependence can be used to achieve an almost perfect matching to the lattice data for the gluon and ghost propagators.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin Transformations, Nielsen Identities, Their Equivalence and Implications for QCD

The Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs) represent an important tool for probing the gauge dependence of the correlation functions within the class of linear covariant gauges. Recently these transformations have been derived from first principles in the context of non-Abelian gauge theory (QCD) introducing a gauge invariant transverse gauge field expressible as an infinite power series in a Stueckelberg field. In this work we explicitly calculate the transformation for the gluon propagator, reproducing its dependence on the gauge parameter at the one loop level and elucidating the role of the extra fields involved in this theoretical framework. Later on, employing a unifying scheme based upon the BRST symmetry and a resulting generalized Slavnov-Taylor identity, we establish the equivalence between the LKFTs and the Nielsen identities which are also known to connect results in different gauges.
