EGGHead: Efficient Generalizable Gaussian Heads from a Single Image

Creating photorealistic human heads typically involves trade-offs between representation power, efficiency, and generalizability. Traditional mesh-based solutions relying on 3DMMs generally sacrifice representation power but are efficient to render. On the other hand, NeRF-based methods improve representation power and fidelity while sacrificing efficiency. Gaussian splatting methods attempt to resolve these trade-offs by offering both high representation power and efficiency with real-time rendering. However, their efficiency nonetheless depends on the number of rasterized Gaussians, and the time needed to optimize and prepare the head (the enrollment time) is often high. In light of this, we propose EGGHead, which introduces a novel Gaussian allocation algorithm that efficiently assigns Gaussians to the head's semantic regions given a fixed Gaussian budget. Our algorithm reduces the number of Gaussians needed while minimizing the impact on representation power. EGGHead operates in a single forward pass and outperforms previous single-image face modeling methods in reconstruction quality, novel view synthesis, and rendering speeds.

Learning Semantic Inpainting for Animatable Gaussian Head Avatars

We present SInGA, a novel method for learning Semantic Inpainting for animatable Gaussian head Avatars from a single image. Existing avatar approaches often rely on multi-view observations and lack effective handling of unobserved regions in single-view settings, limiting their applicability in such scenarios. To address this, we propose a semantic inpainting framework defined in UV space for completing unobserved facial regions. Our key insight lies in the structured topology of the UV representation, which provides consistent spatial correspondences and enables reliable completion of identity-specific features using the inherent symmetry cues of human faces. We extract features from observed regions and use them to complete unobserved regions. The completed representation is then used to regress Gaussian attributes, effectively performing Gaussian inpainting. In addition, instead of relying on a single Gaussian at each surface or pixel location, we stack multiple Gaussians to enhance detail. The resulting avatar generalizes across identities without requiring per-identity optimization and can be animated with driving inputs. Experimental results show that our method generates high-quality head avatars with improved completeness and identity preservation, while supporting realistic animation and consistent rendering from unobserved views.

Refined Geometry-guided Head Avatar Reconstruction from Monocular RGB Video

High-fidelity reconstruction of head avatars from monocular videos is highly desirable for virtual human applications, but it remains a challenge in the fields of computer graphics and computer vision. In this paper, we propose a two-phase head avatar reconstruction network that incorporates a refined 3D mesh representation. Our approach, in contrast to existing methods that rely on coarse template-based 3D representations derived from 3DMM, aims to learn a refined mesh representation suitable for a NeRF that captures complex facial nuances. In the first phase, we train 3DMM-stored NeRF with an initial mesh to utilize geometric priors and integrate observations across frames using a consistent set of latent codes. In the second phase, we leverage a novel mesh refinement procedure based on an SDF constructed from the density field of the initial NeRF. To mitigate the typical noise in the NeRF density field without compromising the features of the 3DMM, we employ Laplace smoothing on the displacement field. Subsequently, we apply a second-phase training with these refined meshes, directing the learning process of the network towards capturing intricate facial details. Our experiments demonstrate that our method further enhances the NeRF rendering based on the initial mesh and achieves performance superior to state-of-the-art methods in reconstructing high-fidelity head avatars with such input.
