Robustness-enhanced Myoelectric Control with GAN-based Open-set Recognition

Electromyography (EMG) signals are widely used in human motion recognition and medical rehabilitation, yet their variability and susceptibility to noise significantly limit the reliability of myoelectric control systems. Existing recognition algorithms often fail to handle unfamiliar actions effectively, leading to system instability and errors. This paper proposes a novel framework based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to enhance the robustness and usability of myoelectric control systems by enabling open-set recognition. The method incorporates a GAN-based discriminator to identify and reject unknown actions, maintaining system stability by preventing misclassifications. Experimental evaluations on publicly available and self-collected datasets demonstrate a recognition accuracy of 97.6\% for known actions and a 23.6\% improvement in Active Error Rate (AER) after rejecting unknown actions. The proposed approach is computationally efficient and suitable for deployment on edge devices, making it practical for real-world applications.

Parsimonious Universal Function Approximator for Elastic and Elasto-Plastic Cavity Expansion Problems

Cavity expansion is a canonical problem in geotechnics, which can be described by partial differential equations (PDEs) and ordinary differential equations (ODEs). This study explores the potential of using a new solver, a physics-informed neural network (PINN), to calculate the stress field in an expanded cavity in the elastic and elasto-plastic regimes. Whilst PINNs have emerged as an effective universal function approximator for deriving the solutions of a wide range of governing PDEs/ODEs, their ability to solve elasto-plastic problems remains uncertain. A novel parsimonious loss function is first proposed to balance the simplicity and accuracy of PINN. The proposed method is applied to diverse material behaviours in the cavity expansion problem including isotropic, anisotropic elastic media, and elastic-perfectly plastic media with Tresca and Mohr-Coulomb yield criteria. The results indicate that the use of a parsimonious prior information-based loss function is highly beneficial to deriving the approximate solutions of complex PDEs with high accuracy. The present method allows for accurate derivation of solutions for both elastic and plastic mechanical responses of an expanded cavity. It also provides insights into how PINNs can be further advanced to solve more complex problems in geotechnical practice.

Underwater Image Enhancement based on Deep Learning and Image Formation Model

Underwater robots play an important role in oceanic geological exploration, resource exploitation, ecological research, and other fields. However, the visual perception of underwater robots is affected by various environmental factors. The main challenge now is that images captured by underwater robots are color-distorted. The hue of underwater images tends to be close to green and blue. In addition, the contrast is low and the details are fuzzy. In this paper, a new underwater image enhancement algorithm based on deep learning and image formation model is proposed. Experimental results show that the advantages of the proposed method are that it eliminates the influence of underwater environmental factors, enriches the color, enhances details, achieves higher scores in PSNR and SSIM metrics, and helps feature key-point point matching get better results. Another significant advantage is that its computation speed is much faster than other methods.
