Explosive synchronization in phase-frustrated multiplex networks

We investigate the phenomenon of first order transition (explosive synchronization (ES)) in adaptively coupled phase-frustrated bi-layer multiplex network. We consider Sakaguchi-Kuramoto (SK) dynamics over the top of multiplex networks and we establish that ES can emerge in all layers of a multiplex network even when one of the layers may not exhibit ES in the absence of the inter layer connections. We clearly identify the regions of the parameter space, in which the multiplexity wins over frustration parameter and network structure for the emergence of ES. Based on the mean field analysis around the coherent state and a perturbative approach around the incoherent state we analytically derive the synchronization transition points (backward and forward) of all layers of multiplex network as well as its mono-layer counterpart satisfying a close agreement with the numerical results.

Perfect synchronization in networks of phase-frustrated oscillators

Synchronizing phase frustrated Kuramoto oscillators, a challenge that has found applications from neuronal networks to the power grid, is an eluding problem, as even small phase-lags cause the oscillators to avoid synchronization. Here we show, constructively, how to strategically select the optimal frequency set, capturing the natural frequencies of all oscillators, for a given network and phase-lags, that will ensure perfect synchronization. We find that high levels of synchronization are sustained in the vicinity of the optimal set, allowing for some level of deviation in the frequencies without significant degradation of synchronization. Demonstrating our results on first and second order phase-frustrated Kuramoto dynamics, we implement them on both model and real power grid networks, showing how to achieve synchronization in a phase frustrated environment.

Synchronization transition in Sakaguchi-Kuramoto model on complex networks with partial degree-frequency correlation

We investigate transition to synchronization in Sakaguchi-Kuramoto (SK) model on complex networks analytically as well as numerically. Natural frequencies of a percentage ($f$) of higher degree nodes of the network are assumed to be correlated with their degrees and that of the remaining nodes are drawn from some standard distribution namely Lorenz distribution. The effects of variation of $f$ and phase frustration parameter $α$ on transition to synchronization are investigated in detail. Self-consistent equations involving critical coupling strength ($λ_c$) and group angular velocity ($Ω_c$) at the onset of synchronization have been derived analytically in the thermodynamic limit. For the detailed investigation we considered SK model on scale-free as well as Erdős-Rényi (ER) networks. Interestingly explosive synchronization (ES) has been observed in both the networks for different ranges of values of $α$ and $f$. For scale-free networks, as the value of $f$ is set within $10\% \leq f \leq 70\%$, the range of the values of $α$ for existence of the ES is greatly enhanced compared to the fully degree-frequency correlated case. On the other hand, for random networks, ES observed in a narrow window of $α$ when the value of $f$ is taken within $30\% \leq f \leq 50\%$. In all the cases critical coupling strengths for transition to synchronization computed from the analytically derived self-consistent equations show a very good agreement with the numerical results.

Zero Prandtl-number rotating magnetoconvection

We investigate instabilities and chaos near the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) of electrically conducting fluids with free-slip, perfectly electrically and thermally conducting boundary conditions in presence of uniform rotation about vertical axis and horizontal external magnetic field by considering zero Prandtl-number limit ($\mathrm{Pr} \rightarrow 0$). Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and low dimensional modeling of the system are done for the investigation. Values of the Chandrasekhar number ($\mathrm{Q}$) and the Taylor number ($\mathrm{Ta}$) are varied in the range $0 < \mathrm{Q}, \mathrm{Ta} \leq 50$. Depending on the values of the parameters in the chosen range and choice of initial conditions, onset of convection is found be either periodic or chaotic. Interestingly, it is found that chaos at the onset can occur through four different routes namely homoclinic, intermittency, period doubling and quasi-periodic routes. Homoclinic and intermittent routes to chaos at the onset occur in presence of weak magnetic field ($\mathrm{Q} < 2$), while period doubling route is observed for relatively stronger magnetic field ($\mathrm{Q} \geq 2$) for one set of initial conditions. On the other hand, quasiperiodic route to chaos at the onset is observed for another set of initial conditions. However, the rotation rate (value of $\mathrm{Ta}$) also plays an important role in determining the nature of convection at the onset. Analysis of the system simultaneously with DNS and low dimensional modeling helps to clearly identify different flow regimes concentrated near the onset of convection and understand their origins. The periodic or chaotic convection at the onset is found to be connected with rich bifurcation structures involving subcritical pitchfork, imperfect pitchfork, supercritical Hopf, imperfect homoclinic gluing and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations.

Transition to synchrony in degree-frequency correlated Sakaguchi-Kuramoto model

We investigate transition to synchrony in degree-frequency correlated Sakaguchi-Kuramoto (SK) model on complex networks both analytically and numerically. We analytically derive self-consistent equations for group angular velocity and order parameter for the model in the thermodynamic limit. Using the self-consistent equations we investigate transition to synchronization in SK model on uncorrelated scale-free (SF) and Erdős-Rényi (ER) networks in detail. Depending on the degree distribution exponent ($γ$) of SF networks and phase-frustration parameter, the population undergoes from first order transition (explosive synchronization (ES)) to second order transition and vice versa. In ER networks transition is always second order irrespective of the phase-lag parameter. We observe that the critical coupling strength for the onset of synchronization is decreased by phase-frustration parameter in case of SF network where as in ER network, the phase-frustration delays the onset of synchronization. Extensive numerical simulations using SF and ER networks are performed to validate the analytical results. An analytical expression of critical coupling strength for the onset of synchronization is also derived from the self consistent equations considering the vanishing order parameter limit.

Transition from homogeneous to inhomogeneous steady states in oscillators under cyclic coupling

We report a transition from homogeneous steady state to inhomogeneous steady state in coupled oscillators, both limit cycle and chaotic, under cyclic coupling and diffusive coupling as well when an asymmetry is introduced in terms of a negative parameter mismatch. Such a transition appears in limit cycle systems via pitchfork bifurcation as usual. Especially, when we focus on chaotic systems, the transition follows a transcritical bifurcation for cyclic coupling while it is a pitchfork bifurcation for the conventional diffusive coupling. We use the paradigmatic Van der Pol oscillator as the limit cycle system and a Sprott system as a chaotic system. We verified our results analytically for cyclic coupling and numerically check all results including diffusive coupling for both the limit cycle and chaotic systems.

Oscillatory instability and routes to chaos in Rayleigh-Bénard convection: effect of external magnetic field

We investigate oscillatory instability and routes to chaos in Rayleigh-Bénard convection of electrically conducting fluids in presence of external horizontal magnetic field. Three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the governing equations are performed for the investigation. DNS shows that oscillatory instability is inhibited by the magnetic field. The supercritical Rayleigh number for the onset of oscillation is found to scale with the Chandrasekhar number $\mathrm{Q}$ as $\mathrm{Q}^α$ in DNS with $α= 1.8$ for low Prandtl numbers ($\mathrm{Pr}$). Most interestingly, DNS shows $\mathrm{Q}$ dependent routes to chaos for low Prandtl number fluids like mercury ($\mathrm{Pr} = 0.025$). For low $\mathrm{Q}$, period doubling routes are observed, while, quasiperiodic routes are observed for high $\mathrm{Q}$. The bifurcation structure associated with $\mathrm{Q}$ dependent routes to chaos is then understood by constructing a low dimensional model from the DNS data. The model also shows similar scaling laws as DNS. Bifurcation analysis of the low dimensional model shows that origin of different routes are associated with the bifurcation structure near the primary instability. These observations show similarity with the previous results of convection experiments performed with mercury.

Bursting dynamics in a population of oscillatory and excitable Josephson junction

We report parabolic bursting in a globally coupled network of mixed population of oscillatory and excitable Josephson junctions. The resistive-capacitive shunted junction (RCSJ) model of the superconducitng device is used for this study. We focus on the parameter regime of the junction where its dynamics is governed by the saddle-node on invariant circle (SNIC) bifurcation. In this SNIC regime, the bursting appears in a broad paramater space of the ensemble of mixed junctions. For a coupling value above a threshold, the network splits into two synchronized clusters when a reductionism approach is applied to reproduce the bursting behavior of the large network. The excitable junctions effectively induces a slow dynamics in the network to generate bursting. This bursting is a generic property of a globally coupled network with a mixed population of dynamical nodes where each node posseses the SNIC property.

Modeling of scalar dissipation rates in flamelet models for low temperature combustion engine simulations

The flamelet approach offers a viable framework for combustion modeling of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines under stratified mixture conditions. Scalar dissipation rate acts as a key parameter in flamelet-based combustion models which connects the physical mixing space to the reactive space. The aim of this paper is to gain fundamental insights into turbulent mixing in low temperature combustion (LTC) engines and investigate the modeling of scalar dissipation rate. Three direct numerical simulation (DNS) test cases of two-dimensional turbulent auto-ignition of a hydrogen-air mixture with different correlations of temperature and mixture fraction are considered, which are representative of different ignition regimes. The existing models of mean and conditional scalar dissipation rates, and probability density functions (PDFs) of mixture fraction and total enthalpy are a priori validated against the DNS data.

Transition from amplitude to oscillation death in a network of oscillators

We report a transition from a homogeneous steady state (HSS) to inhomogeneous steady states (IHSSs) in a network of globally coupled identical oscillators. We perturb a synchronized population in the network with a few local negative mean field links. It is observed that the whole population splits into two clusters for a certain number of negative mean field links and specific range of coupling strength. For further increases of the strength of interaction these clusters collapse to a HSS followed by a transition to IHSSs. We analytically determine the origin of HSS and its transition to IHSS in relation to the number of negative mean-field links and the strength of interaction using a reductionism approach to the model network in a two-cluster state. We verify the results with numerical examples of networks using the paradigmatic Landau-Stuart limit cycle system and the chaotic Rossler oscillator as dynamical nodes. During the transition from HSS to IHSSs, the network follows the Turing type symmetry breaking pitchfork or transcritical bifurcation depending upon the system dynamics.

Diverse routes of transition from amplitude to oscillation death in coupled oscillators under additional repulsive link

We report the existence of diverse routes of transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) in three different diffusively coupled systems, those are perturbed by a symmetry break- ing repulsive coupling link. For limit cycle systems the transition is through a pitchfork bifurcation (PB) as has been noted before, but in chaotic systems it can be through a saddle-node or a trans- critical bifurcation depending on the nature of the underlying dynamics of the individual systems. The diversity of the routes and their dependence on the complex dynamics of the coupled systems not only broadens our understanding of this important phenomenon but can lead to potentially new practical applications.

Oscillation death in diffusively coupled oscillators by local repulsive link

A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of globally coupled oscillators and find that the number of repulsive links is always fewer than the size of the network.

Pattern dynamics near homoclinic bifurcation in Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We report for the first time the pattern dynamics in the vicinity of an inverse homoclinic bifurcation in an extended dissipative system. We observe, in direct numerical simulations of three dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection, a spontaneous breaking of a competition of two mutually perpendicular sets of oscillating cross rolls to one of two possible sets of oscillating cross rolls as the Rayleigh number is raised above a critical value. The time period of the cross-roll patterns diverges, and shows scaling behavior near the bifurcation point. This is an example of a transition from nonlocal to local pattern dynamics near an inverse homoclinic bifurcation. We also present a simple four-mode model that captures the pattern dynamics quite well.

Role of uniform horizontal magnetic field on convective flow

The effect of uniform magnetic field applied along a fixed horizontal direction in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids has been studied using a low dimensional model. The model shows the onset of convection (primary instability) in the form of two dimensional stationary rolls in the absence of magnetic field, when the Rayleigh number $R$ is raised above a critical value $R_c$. The flow becomes three dimensional at slightly higher values of Rayleigh number via wavy instability. These wavy rolls become chaotic for slightly higher values of $R$ in low-Prandtl-number ($P_r$) fluids. A uniform magnetic field along horizontal plane strongly affects all kinds of convective flows observed at higher values of $R$ in its absence. As the magnetic field is raised above certain value, it orients the convective rolls in its own direction. Although the horizontal magnetic field does not change the threshold for the primary instability, it affects the threshold for secondary (wavy) instability. It inhibits the onset of wavy instability. The critical Rayleigh number $R_o (Q,P_r)$ at the onset of wavy instability, which depends on Chandrasekhar's number $Q$ and $P_r$, increases monotonically with $Q$ for a fixed value of $P_r$. The dimensionless number $R_o (Q, P_r)/(R_c Q P_r)$ scales with $Q$ as $Q^{-1}$. A stronger magnetic field suppresses chaos and makes the flow two dimensional with roll pattern aligned along its direction.

Lag synchronization and scaling of chaotic attractor in coupled system

We report a design of delay coupling for lag synchronization in two unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators. A delay term is introduced in the definition of the coupling to target any desired lag between the driver and the response. The stability of the lag synchronization is ensured by using the Hurwitz matrix stability. We are able to scale up or down the size of a driver attractor at a response system in presence of a lag. This allows compensating the attenuation of the amplitude of a signal during transmission through a delay line. The delay coupling is illustrated with numerical examples of 3D systems, the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model, the Rössler system and a Sprott system and, a 4D system. We implemented the coupling in electronic circuit to realize any desired lag synchronization in chaotic oscillators and scaling of attractors.

Dynamics of zero-Prandtl number convection near the onset

In this paper we present various convective states of zero-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and a 27-mode low-dimensional model containing the energetic modes of DNS. The origin of these convective states have been explained using bifurcation analysis. The system is chaotic at the onset itself with three coexisting chaotic attractors that are born at two codimension-2 bifurcation points. One of the bifurcation points with a single zero eigenvalue and a complex pair $(0,\pm i ω)$ generates chaotic attractors and associated periodic, quasiperiodic, and phase-locked states that are related to the wavy rolls observed in experiments and simulations. The frequency of the wavy rolls are in general agreement with $ω$ of the above eigenvalue of the stability matrix. The other bifurcation point with a double zero eigenvalue produces the other set of chaotic attractors and ordered states such as squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations with intermediate squares, some of which are common to the 13-mode model of Pal et al.(2009).

Bifurcation and chaos in zero Prandtl number convection

We present the detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns near the onset of zero Prandtl number Rayleigh Bénard convection. We employ both direct numerical simulation and a low-dimensional model ensuring qualitative agreement between the two. Various flow patterns originate from a stationary square observed at a higher Rayleigh number through a series of bifurcations starting from a pitchfork followed by a Hopf and finally a homoclinic bifurcation as the Rayleigh number is reduced to the critical value. Global chaos, intermittency, and crises are observed near the onset.

Wavy stripes and squares in zero P number convection

A simple model to explain numerically observed behaviour of chaotically varying stripes and square patterns in zero Prandtl number convection in Boussinesq fluid is presented. The nonlinear interaction of mutually perpendicular sets of wavy rolls, via higher mode, may lead to a competition between the two sets of wavy rolls. The appearance of square patterns is due to the secondary forward Hopf bifurcation of a set of wavy rolls.
