Dimer-induced heavy-fermion superconductivity in the Shastry-Sutherland Kondo lattice model

We study the Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice focusing on the quantum phase transition between the valence bond solid and the heavy fermion liquid phase. By explicitly including spinon pairing of local moments at the mean-field level, we establish the emergence of a unique heavy fermion superconducting phase induced by dimer ordering of the local moments coexisting with Kondo hybridization. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for suitable choices of parameters, a partial Kondo-screening phase, where some of the valence bonds are broken, precedes the aforementioned dimer-induced superconducting phase. Our results have important implications in understanding the experimental observations in the heavy fermion Shasstry-Sutherland compounds.

Hysteretic magnetoresistance and unconventional anomalous Hall effect in the frustrated magnet TmB_4

We study TmB_4, a frustrated magnet on the Archimedean Shastry-Sutherland lattice, through magnetization and transport experiments. The lack of anisotropy in resistivity shows that TmB_4 is an electronically three-dimensional system. The magnetoresistance (MR) is hysteretic at low-temperature even though a corresponding hysteresis in magnetization is absent. The Hall resistivity shows unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and is linear above saturation despite a large MR. We propose that complex structures at magnetic domain walls may be responsible for the hysteretic MR and may also lead to the AHE.

Origin of modulated phases and magnetic hysteresis in TmB_4

We investigate the low temperature magnetic phases in TmB_4, a metallic quantum magnet on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice, using co-ordinated experimental and theoretical studies. Our results provide an explanation for the appearance of the intriguing fractional plateau in TmB_4 and accompanying magnetic hysteresis. Together with observation of the bump in the half-plateau, our results support the picture that the magnetization plateau structure in TmB_4 is strongly influenced by the zero-field modulated phases. We present a phenomenological model to explain the appearance of the modulated phases and a microscopic Hamiltonian that captures the complete magnetic behavior of TmB_4.

Berry Curvature of interacting bosons in a honeycomb lattice

We consider soft-core bosons with onsite interaction loaded in the honeycomb lattice with different site energies for the two sublattices. Using both a mean-field approach and quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, we show that the topology of the honeycomb lattice results in a non-vanishing Berry curvature for the band structure of the single-particle excitations of the system. This Berry curvature induces an anomalous Hall effect. It is seen by studying the time evolution of a wavepacket, namely a superfluid ground state in a harmonic trap, subjected either to a constant force (Bloch oscillations) or to a sudden shift of the trap center.

Characterizing the Haldane phase in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We review the basic properties of the Haldane phase in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains, including its persistence in quasi-one-dimensional geometries. Using large-scale numerical simulations, we map out the phase diagram for a realistic model applicable to experimental Haldane compounds. We also investigate the effect of different chain coupling geometries and confirm a general mean field universality of the critical coupling times the coordination number of the lattice. Inspired by the recent development of characterization of symmetry protected topological states, of which the Haldane phase of spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is a preeminent example, we provide direct evidence that the quasi-one-dimensional Haldane phase is indeed a non-trivial symmetry protected topological state.

Strange correlations in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We study the behavior of the recently proposed "strange correlator" [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 112}, 247202 (2014)] in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. Using projective quantum Monte Carlo, we are able to directly access the strange correlator in a variety of phases, as well as to examine its critical behavior at the quantum phase transition between trivial and non-trivial symmetry protected topological phases. After finding the expected long-range behavior in these two symmetry conserving phases, we go on to verify the topological nature of two-leg and three-leg spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. This demonstrates the power of the strange correlator in distinguishing between trivial and non-trivial symmetry protected topological phases.

Magnetic phases in the S=1 Shastry-Sutherland model with uniaxial anisotropy

We explore the field induced magnetic phases of an $S=1$ $XXZ$ model with single-ion anisotropy and large Ising-like anisotropy on a Shastry Sutherland lattice over a wide range of Hamiltonian parameters and applied magnetic field. The multitude of ground state phases are characterized in detail in terms of their thermodynamic properties and the underlying classical (Ising limit) spin arrangements for the plateau phases are identified by calculating the static structure factors. The enlarged local Hilbert space of the $S=1$ spins results in several new ground state phases that are not realized for $S=1/2$ spins. These include the quantum paramagnetic state that is ubiquitous to $S=1$ spins with single ion anisotropy, two different spin supersolid phases (with distinct longitudinal ordering) and a magnetization plateau that arises as a direct descendant of the 1/3 plateau due to quantum fluctuations that are not possible for $S=1/2$ spins. We predict the same mechanism will lead to plateaus at smaller fractions of 1/3 for higher spins. The full momentum dependence of the longitudinal and transverse components of the static structure factor is calculated in the spin supersolid phase to demonstrate the simultaneous existence of diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order as well as the different longitudinal orderings.

Quenching the Haldane gap in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We consider a quasi-one-dimensional system of spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains in 2D and 3D hypercubic lattices with interchain coupling $J$ and uniaxial single-ion anisotropy $D$. Using large scale numerical simulations, we map out the $J-D$ phase diagram and investigate the low lying excitations of the Haldane phase in the $J\ll1$ limit. We also provide direct evidence that the Haldane phase remains a non-trivial symmetry protected topological state for small but finite $J$.

Neel to spin-Peierls transition in a quasi-1D Heisenberg model coupled to bond phonons

The zero and finite temperature spin-Peierls transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is investigated using the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The quantum phase transition from a gapless Neel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is studied in the parameter space spanned by spatial anisotropy, inter-chain coupling strength and spin-lattice coupling strength. It is found that for any finite inter-chain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state only occurs when the spin-lattice coupling exceeds a finite, non-zero critical value. This is in contrast to the pure 1D model (zero inter-chain coupling), where adiabatic/classical phonons lead to a dimerized ground state for any non-zero spin-phonon interaction. The phase diagram in the parameter space shows that for a strong inter-chain coupling, the relation between the inter-chain coupling and the critical value of the spin-phonon interaction is linear whereas for weak inter-chain coupling, this behavior is found to have a natural logarithm-like relation. No region was found to have a long range magnetic order and dimerization occurring simultaneously. Instead, the Neel state order vanishes simultaneously with the setting in of the spin-Peierls state. For the thermal phase transition, a continuous heat capacity with a peak at the critical temperature, $T_{c}$, shows a second order phase transition. The variation of the equilibrium bond length distortion, $δ_{eq}$, with temperature showed a power law relation which decayed to zero as the temperature was increased to $T_{c}$, indicating a continuous transition from the dimerized phase to a paramagnetic phase with uniform bond length and zero antiferromagnetic susceptibility.

Magnetization plateaus in generalized Shastry-Sutherland models

We study an anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic transverse spin exchange using exact quantum Monte Carlo methods. Such a model is relevant to a class of rare earth tetraboride materials that display a range of magnetization plateaus under applied magnetic field. The layered arrangement of magnetic ions in these materials is topologically equivalent to the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this frustrated geometry, we study the interplay of next-nearest neighbor interactions in stabilizing a plateau at half the saturation magnetization (or 1/2 plateau). We also show hysteresis-like behavior at the onset of the 1/3 plateau.

Dimensional Crossover in Quasi-one-dimensional Spin-1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

We study the quenching of the Haldane gap in quasi-one-dimensional systems of weakly coupled spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains. The critical interchain coupling Jc required to stabilize long range magnetic order can be accurately determined from large scale quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Several different geometries of coupled chains are studied, illustrating the dependence of Jc on the coordination of chains. For bipartite geometries, ferromagnetically coupled chains yield similar magnitudes for Jc.

Columnar antiferromagnetic order and spin supersolid phase on the extended Shastry-Sutherland lattice

We use large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study an extended version of the canonical Shastry-Sutherland model -- including additional interactions and exchange anisotropy -- over a wide range of interaction parameters and an applied magnetic field. The model is appropriate for describing the low energy properties of some members of the rare earth tetraborides. Working in the limit of large Ising-like exchange anisotropy, we demonstrate the stabilization of columnar antiferromagnetic order in the ground state at zero field and an extended magnetization plateau at 1/2 the saturation magnetization in the presence of an applied longitudinal magnetic field -- qualitatively similar to experimentally observed low-temperature phases in ErB$_4$. Our results show that for an optimal range of exchange parameters, a spin supersolid ground state is realized over a finite range of applied field between the columnar antiferromagnetic phase and the magnetization plateau. The full momentum dependence of the longitudinal and transverse components of the static structure factor is calculated in the spin supersolid phase to demonstrate the simultaneous existence of diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order. Our results will provide crucial guidance in designing further experiments to search for the interesting spin supersolid phase in ErB$_4$.

Phase Diagram and Magnetic Excitations of Anisotropic Spin-One Magnets

We use a generalized spin wave approach and large scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study the quantum phase diagram and quasiparticle excitations of the S=1 Heisenberg model with an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy in dimensions d=2 and 3. We consider two alternative approximations for describing the quantum paramagnetic state: the standard Holstein-Primakoff approximation and a modified treatment in which the local constraint (finite dimension of the local Hilbert space) is enforced by introducing a Lagrange multiplier. While both approximations produce qualitatively similar results, the latter approach is the only one that is in good quantitative agreement with the quantum phase diagram and the quasiparticle dispersions obtained with QMC. This result is very important for low-temperature studies of quantum paramagnets in magnetic fields because it shows that a simple modification of the standard analytical approach should produce much better quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.

Pairing Correlations in the two-layer attractive Hubbard Model

Studies of systems with two fermionic bands with repulsive interaction strength U have a long history, with the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) being one of the most frequently considered Hamiltonians. In this paper, we use Quantum Monte Carlo to study analogous issues for attractive interactions. As in the Periodic Anderson Model, we focus on a case where one band is uncorrelated (U=0), and focus on the effect of hybridization V between the bands on the pairing correlations. A key difference with the PAM is that there is no sign problem, so that we are able to explore the physics of doped multi-band attractive systems at low temperatures whereas ground state properties of repulsive models can be determined only at half-filling. For small V, pairing in the U<0 layer induces pairing in the U=0 layer. At larger V the ground state of the coupled system loses its superconducting character. The Quantum Monte Carlo data are complemented by results obtained with the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approximation.

Magnetic and nematic orderings in spin-1 antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy

We study a spin-one Heisenberg model with exchange interaction, J, uniaxial single-ion exchange anisotropy, D, and Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field, B, parallel to the symmetry axis. We com- pute the (D/J,B/J) quantum phase diagram for square and simple cubic lattices by combining an- alytical and Quantum Monte Carlo approaches, and find a transition between XY-antiferromagnetic and ferronematic phases that spontaneously break the U(1) symmetry of the model. In the language of bosonic gases, this is a transition between a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of single bosons and a BEC of pairs. Our work opens up new avenues for measuring this transition in real magnets.

Low temperature thermodynamic properties near the field-induced quantum critical point in DTN

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermodynamic properties: specific heat, magnetization and thermal expansion in the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) around the lower critical field $H_{c1} \approx 2$\,T in DTN . A $T^{3/2}$ behavior in the specific heat and magnetization is observed at very low temperatures at $H=H_{c1}$ that is consistent with the universality class of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient at $H_{c1}$ shows minor deviations from the expected $T^{1/2}$ behavior. Our experimental study is complemented by analytical calculations and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which reproduce nicely the measured quantities. We analyze the thermal and the magnetic Grüneisen parameters that are ideal quantities to identify QCPs. Both parameters diverge at $H_{c1}$ with the expected $T^{-1}$ power law. By using the Ehrenfest relations at the second order phase transition, we are able to estimate the pressure dependencies of the characteristic temperature and field scales.

Dimensionality selection in a molecule-based magnet

Gaining control of the building blocks of magnetic materials and thereby achieving particular characteristics will make possible the design and growth of bespoke magnetic devices. While progress in the synthesis of molecular materials, and especially coordination polymers, represents a significant step towards this goal, the ability to tune the magnetic interactions within a particular framework remains in its infancy. Here we demonstrate a chemical method which achieves dimensionality selection via preferential inhibition of the magnetic exchange in an $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet along one crystal direction, switching the system from being quasi-two- to quasi-one-dimensional while effectively maintaining the nearest-neighbour coupling strength.

Dimensional crossover in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets: a quantum Monte Carlo study

We present results of large scale simulations of the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a tetragonal lattice. The stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method is used to calculate equilibrium thermodynamic variables in the presence of an external magnetic field. In particular, the low temperature magnetization curve is investigated in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D), quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D), and three-dimensional (3D) limits. Starting from the 3D limit, the Q1D (Q2D) limit is achieved by reducing the in-plane (out-of-plane) spin coupling strength towards zero. In the Q1D limit, a Haldane gap appears in the magnetization curve at low magnetic field. Additionally, near the saturation field the slope of the magnetization curve increases substantially, approaching the infinite-slope behavior of a one-dimensional spin-1 chain. A similar (though less pronounced) effect is seen in the Q2D limit. We also study the effect of uniaxial single-ion anisotropy on the magnetization curve for Q1D and Q2D systems. Our results will be important in understanding the field-induced behavior of a class of low-dimensional Ni-based quantum magnets.
