Ashkin-Teller formalism for elastic response of DNA molecule to external force and torque

We propose an Ashkin-Teller like model for elastic response of DNA molecule to external force and torque. The base-stacking interaction is described in a simple and uniform way. We obtain the phase diagram of dsDNA, and in particular, the transition from B form to the S state induced by stretching and twisting. The elastic response of the ssDNA is presented also in a unified formalism. The close relation of dsDNA molecule structure with elastic response is shown clearly. The calculated folding angle of the dsDNA molecule is $59.2^o$.

Topology Changes and Quantum Phase Transition in Spin-Chain System

The standard Landau-Ginzburg scenario of phase transition is broken down for quantum phase transition. It is difficult to find an order parameter to indicate different phases for quantum fluctuations. Here, we suggest a topological description of the quantum phase transition for the XY model. The ground states are identified as a specialized U(1) principal bundle on the base manifold $S^2$. And then different first Chern numbers of U(1) principal bundle on the base manifold $S^2$ are associated to each phase of quantum fluctuations. The particle-hole picture is used to parameterized the ground states of the XY system. We show that a singularity of the Chern number of the ground states occurs simultaneously with a quantum phase transition. The Chern number is a suitable topological order of the quantum phase transition.

Voice Service Support in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile ad hoc networks are expected to support voice traffic. The requirement for small delay and jitter of voice traffic poses a significant challenge for medium access control (MAC) in such networks. User mobility makes it more complex due to the associated dynamic path attenuation. In this paper, a MAC scheme for mobile ad hoc networks supporting voice traffic is proposed. With the aid of a low-power probe prior to DATA transmissions, resource reservation is achieved in a distributed manner, thus leading to small delay and jitter. The proposed scheme can automatically adapt to dynamic path attenuation in a mobile environment. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Light 1-+ exotics: molecular resonances

Highlights in the search for nonconventional (non qqbar) meson states are the pi_1(1400) and pi_1(1600) exotic candidates. Should they exist, mounting theoretical arguments suggest that they are tetraquark molecular resonances excitable by meson rescattering. We report a new tetraquark calculation within a model field theory approximation to Quantum Chromodynamics in the Coulomb gauge supporting this conjecture. We also strengthen this claim by consistently contrasting results with exotic state predictions for hybrid (q qbar g) mesons within the same theoretical framework. Our findings confirm that molecular-like configurations involving two color singlets (a resonance, not a bound state) are clearly favored over hybrid or color-exotic tetraquark meson (q qbar q qbar atoms) formation. Finally, to assist needed further experimental searches we document a useful off-plane correlator for establishing the structure of these exotic systems along with similar, but anticipated much narrower, states that should exist in the charmonium and bottomonium spectra.

Short-N characteristic radiative transfer method in 2D cylindrical RZ coordinates

We present a new radiative transfer method Short-N Characteristics that is a hybrid between the standard long characteristic methods and the standard short characteristic methods. We have implemented the numerical method within the SPECT3D imaging and spectral analysis application. Numerical experiments have shown that the short-N method is capable of reproducing the accuracy of the long characteristic methods, while delivering the CPU time efficiency of the short characteristic methods. We apply the short-N method to 2.5D cylindrical coordinates, i.e., we assume a 3D problem under azimuthal symmetry leading to a 2D mathematical problem with r-z as the independent spatial coordinates (2DRZ). We are currently working to extend this new method to other geometries.

On Potentially $(K_5-H)$-graphic Sequences

Let $K_m-H$ be the graph obtained from $K_m$ by removing the edges set $E(H)$ of $H$ where $H$ is a subgraph of $K_m$. In this paper, we characterize the potentially $K_5-P_4$ and $K_5-Y_4$-graphic sequences where $Y_4$ is a tree on 5 vertices and 3 leaves.

QCD Coulomb Gauge Approach to Exotic Hadrons

The Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian model is used to calculate masses for selected J^{PC} states consisting of exotic combinations of quarks and gluons: ggg glueballs (oddballs), q bar{q} g hybrid mesons and q bar{q} q bar{q} tetraquark systems. An odderon Regge trajectory is computed for the J^{--} glueballs with intercept much smaller than the pomeron, explaining its nonobservation. The lowest 1^{-+} hybrid meson mass is found to be just above 2.2 GeV while the lightest tetraquark state mass with these exotic quantum numbers is predicted around 1.4 GeV consistent with the observed pi(1400).

Dynamic particle tracking reveals the aging temperature of a colloidal glass

Understanding glasses is considered to be one of the most fundamental problems in statistical physics. A theoretical approach to unravel their universal properties is to consider the validity of equilibrium concepts such as temperature and thermalization in these out-of-equilibrium systems. Here we investigate the autocorrelation and response function to monitor the aging of a colloidal glass. At equilibrium, all the observables are stationary while in the out-of-equilibrium glassy state they have an explicit dependence on the age of the system. We find that the transport coefficients scale with the aging-time as a power-law, a signature of the slow relaxation. Nevertheless, our analysis reveals that the glassy system has thermalized at a constant temperature independent of the age and larger than the bath, reflecting the structural rearrangements of cage-dynamics. Furthermore, a universal scaling law is found to describe the global and local fluctuations of the observables.

Granular dynamics in compaction and stress relaxation

Elastic and dissipative properties of granular assemblies under uniaxial compression are studied both experimentally and by numerical simulations. Following a novel compaction procedure at varying oscillatory pressures, the stress response to a step-strain reveals an exponential relaxation followed by a slow logarithmic decay. Simulations indicate that the latter arises from the coupling between damping and collective grain motion predominantly through sliding. We characterize an analogous "glass transition" for packed grains, below which the system shows aging in time-dependent sliding correlation functions.

Experimental and computational studies of jamming

Jamming is a common feature of out of equilibrium systems showing slow relaxation dynamics. Here we review our efforts in understanding jamming in granular materials using experiments and computer simulations. We first obtain an estimation of an effective temperature for a slowly sheared granular material very close to jamming. The measurement of the effective temperature is realized in the laboratory by slowly shearing a closely-packed ensemble of spherical beads confined by an external pressure in a Couette geometry. All the probe particles, independent of their characteristic features, equilibrate at the same temperature, given by the packing density of the system. This suggests that the effective temperature is a state variable for the nearly jammed system. Then we investigate numerically whether the effective temperature can be obtained from a flat average over the jammed configuration at a given energy in the granular packing, as postulated by the thermodynamic approach to grains.

Experimental measurement of an effective temperature for jammed granular materials

A densely packed granular system is an example of an out-of-equilibrium system in the jammed state. It has been a longstanding problem to determine whether this class of systems can be described by concepts arising from equilibrium statistical mechanics, such as an ``effective temperature'' and ``compactivity''. The measurement of the effective temperature is realized in the laboratory by slowly shearing a closely-packed ensemble of spherical beads confined by an external pressure in a Couette geometry. All the probe particles considered in this study, independent of their characteristic features, equilibrate at the same temperature, given by the packing density of the system.

Isospin dependence of liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter

By using the Furnstahl, Serot and Tang's model, the effect of density dependence of the effective nucleon-nucleon-rho-meson (NN-rho) coupling on the liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter is investigated. A limit pressure p_lim has been found. We found that the liquid-gas phase transition cannot take place if p>p_lim. The binodal surface for density dependent NN-rho coupling situation is addressed.
