Observing geometry of quantum states in a three-level system

In quantum mechanics, geometry has been demonstrated as a useful tool for inferring non-classical behaviors and exotic properties of quantum systems. One standard approach to illustrate the geometry of quantum systems is to project the quantum state space to the Euclidean space via measurements of observables on the system. Despite the great success of this method in studying two-level quantum systems (qubits) with the celebrated Bloch sphere representation, there is always the difficulty to reveal the geometry of multi-dimensional quantum systems. Here we report the first experiment measuring the geometry of such projections beyond the qubit. Specifically, we observe the joint numerical ranges (JNRs) of a triple of observables in a three-level photonic system, providing complete classification of the JNRs. We further show that the geometry of different classes reveal ground-state degeneracies of a Hamiltonian as a linear combination of the observables, which is related to quantum phases in the thermodynamic limit. Our results offer a versatile geometric approach for exploring the properties of higher-dimensional quantum systems.

Ultra-bright multiplexed energy-time entangled photon generation from lithium niobate on insulator chip

High-flux entangled photon source is the key resource for quantum optical study and application. Here it is realized in a lithium niobate on isolator (LNOI) chip, with 2.79*10^11 Hz/mW photon pair rate and 1.53*10^9 Hz/nm/mW spectral brightness. These data are boosted by over two orders of magnitude compared to existing technologies. A 130-nm broad bandwidth is engineered for 8-channel multiplexed energy-time entanglement. Harnessed by high-extinction frequency correlation and Franson interferences up to 99.17% visibility, such energy-time entanglement multiplexing further enhances high-flux data rate, and warrants broad applications in quantum information processing on a chip.

Shifted Poisson structures on differentiable stacks

The purpose of this paper is to investigate shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures in context of differential geometry. The relevant notion is shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on differentiable stacks. More precisely, we develop the notion of Morita equivalence of quasi-Poisson groupoids. Thus isomorphism classes of $(+1)$ Poisson stack correspond to Morita equivalence classes of quasi-Poisson groupoids. In the process, we carry out the following programs of independent interests: (1) We introduce a $\mathbb Z$-graded Lie 2-algebra of polyvector fields on a given Lie groupoid and prove that its homotopy equivalence class is invariant under Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids, thus can be considered as polyvector fields on the corresponding differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$. It turns out that shifted $(+1)$ Poisson structures on ${\mathfrak X}$ correspond exactly to elements of the Maurer-Cartan moduli set of the corresponding dgla. (2) We introduce the notion of tangent complex $T_{\mathfrak X}$ and cotangent complex $L_{\mathfrak X}$ of a differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$ in terms of any Lie groupoid $Γ{\rightrightarrows} M$ representing ${\mathfrak X}$. They correspond to homotopy class of 2-term homotopy $Γ$-modules $A[1]\rightarrow TM$ and $T^\vee M\rightarrow A^\vee[-1]$, respectively. We prove that a $(+1)$-shifted Poisson structure on a differentiable stack ${\mathfrak X}$, defines a morphism ${L_{\mathfrak X}}[1]\to {T_{\mathfrak X}}$.

Hacking single-photon avalanche detector in quantum key distribution via pulse illumination

Quantum key distribution (QKD) has been proved to be information-theoretically secure in theory. Unfortunately, the imperfect devices in practice compromise its security. Thus, to improve the security property of practical QKD systems, a commonly used method is to patch the loopholes in the existing QKD systems. However, in this work, we show an adversary's capability of exploiting the imperfection of the patch itself to bypass the patch. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate that, in the detector under test, the patch of photocurrent monitor against the detector blinding attack can be defeated by the pulse illumination attack proposed in this paper. We also analyze the secret key rate under the pulse illumination attack, which theoretically confirmed that Eve can conduct the attack to learn the secret key. This work indicates the importance of inspecting the security loopholes in a detection unit to further understand their impacts on a QKD system. The method of pulse illumination attack can be a general testing item in the security evaluation standard of QKD.

Sample caching Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to boson sampling simulation

Boson sampling is a promising candidate for quantum supremacy. It requires to sample from a complicated distribution, and is trusted to be intractable on classical computers. Among the various classical sampling methods, the Markov chain Monte Carlo method is an important approach to the simulation and validation of boson sampling. This method however suffers from the severe sample loss issue caused by the autocorrelation of the sample sequence. Addressing this, we propose the sample caching Markov chain Monte Carlo method that eliminates the correlations among the samples, and prevents the sample loss at the meantime, allowing more efficient simulation of boson sampling. Moreover, our method can be used as a general sampling framework that can benefit a wide range of sampling tasks, and is particularly suitable for applications where a large number of samples are taken.

Variational Quantum Circuits for Quantum State Tomography

Quantum state tomography is a key process in most quantum experiments. In this work, we employ quantum machine learning for state tomography. Given an unknown quantum state, it can be learned by maximizing the fidelity between the output of a variational quantum circuit and this state. The number of parameters of the variational quantum circuit grows linearly with the number of qubits and the circuit depth, so that only polynomial measurements are required, even for highly-entangled states. After that, a subsequent classical circuit simulator is used to transform the information of the target quantum state from the variational quantum circuit into a familiar format. We demonstrate our method by performing numerical simulations for the tomography of the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum spin chain, using a variational quantum circuit simulator. Our method is suitable for near-term quantum computing platforms, and could be used for relatively large-scale quantum state tomography for experimentally relevant quantum states.

Point-ahead demonstration of a transmitting antenna for satellite quantum communication

A low-divergence beam is an essential prerequisite for a high-efficiency longdistance optical link, particularly for satellite-based quantum communication. A point-ahead angle, caused by satellite motion, is always several times larger than the divergence angle of the signal beam. We design a novel transmitting antenna with a point-ahead function, and provide an easy-to-perform calibration method with an accuracy better than 0.2 urad. Subsequently, our antenna establishes an uplink to the quantum satellite, Micius, with a link loss of 41-52 dB over a distance of 500-1,400 km. The results clearly confirm the validity of our model, and provide the ability to conduct quantum communications. Our approach can be adopted in various free space optical communication systems between moving platforms.

Polarization design for ground-to-satellite quantum entanglement distribution

Polarization maintenance is a key technology for free-space quantum communication. In this paper, we describe a polarization maintenance design of a transmitting antenna with an average polarization extinction ratio of 887 : 1 by a local test. We implemented a feasible polarization-compensation scheme for satellite motions that has a polarization fidelity more than 0.995. Finally, we distribute entanglement to a satellite from ground for the first time with a violation of Bell inequality by 2.312+-0.096.

A Class of Distributed Event-Triggered Average Consensus Algorithms for Multi-Agent Systems

This paper proposes a class of distributed event-triggered algorithms that solve the average consensus problem in multi-agent systems. By designing events such that a specifically chosen Lyapunov function is monotonically decreasing, event-triggered algorithms succeed in reducing communications among agents while still ensuring that the entire system converges to the desired state. However, depending on the chosen Lyapunov function the transient behaviors can be very different. Moreover, performance requirements also vary from application to application. Consequently, we are instead interested in considering a class of Lyapunov functions such that each Lyapunov function produces a different event-triggered coordination algorithm to solve the multi-agent average consensus problem. The proposed class of algorithms all guarantee exponential convergence of the resulting system and exclusion of Zeno behaviors. This allows us to easily implement different algorithms that all guarantee correctness to meet varying performance needs. We show that our findings can be applied to the practical clock synchronization problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and further corroborate their effectiveness with simulation results.

General-purpose quantum circuit simulator with Projected Entangled-Pair States and the quantum supremacy frontier

Recent advances on quantum computing hardware have pushed quantum computing to the verge of quantum supremacy. Random quantum circuits are outstanding candidates to demonstrate quantum supremacy, which could be implemented on a quantum device that supports nearest-neighbour gate operations on a two-dimensional configuration. Here we show that using the Projected Entangled-Pair States algorithm, a tool to study two-dimensional strongly interacting many-body quantum systems, we can realize an effective general-purpose simulator of quantum algorithms. This technique allows to quantify precisely the memory usage and the time requirements of random quantum circuits, thus showing the frontier of quantum supremacy. With this approach we can compute the full wave-function of the system, from which single amplitudes can be sampled with unit fidelity. Applying this general quantum circuit simulator we measured amplitudes for a $7\times 7$ lattice of qubits with depth $1+40+1$ and double-precision numbers in 31 minutes using less than $93$ TB memory on the Tianhe-2 supercomputer.

Fedosov dg manifolds associated with Lie pairs

Given any pair $(L,A)$ of Lie algebroids, we construct a differential graded manifold $(L[1]\oplus L/A,Q)$, which we call Fedosov dg manifold. We prove that the cohomological vector field $Q$ constructed on $L[1]\oplus L/A$ by the Fedosov iteration method arises as a byproduct of the Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt map established in arXiv:1408.2903. Finally, using the homological perturbation lemma, we establish a quasi-isomorphism of Dolgushev--Fedosov type: the differential graded algebras of functions on the dg manifolds $(A[1],d_A)$ and $(L[1]\oplus L/A,Q)$ are homotopy equivalent.

Formality and Kontsevich--Duflo type theorems for Lie pairs

$\newcommand{\poly}{_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet}}\newcommand{\td}{(\operatorname{td}_{L/A}^{\nabla})^{\frac{1}{2}}}\newcommand{\cx}[1]{\operatorname{tot}\big(Γ(Λ^\bullet A^\vee)\otimes_R\mathcal{#1}\poly\big)}\newcommand{\cy}[1]{\mathbb{H}^\bullet_{\operatorname{CE}}(A,\mathcal{#1}\poly)}$Kontsevich's formality theorem states that there exists an $L_\infty$ quasi-isomorphism from the dgla $T\poly(M)$ of polyvector fields on a smooth manifold $M$ to the dgla $D\poly(M)$ of polydifferential operators on $M$, which extends the classical Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg map. In this paper, we extend Kontsevich's formality theorem to Lie pairs, a framework which includes a range of diverse geometric contexts such as complex manifolds, foliations, and $\mathfrak{g}$-manifolds. The spaces $\cx{T}$ and $\cx{D}$ associated with a Lie pair $(L,A)$ each carry an $L_\infty$ algebra structure canonical up to $L_\infty$ isomorphism. These two spaces serve as replacements for the spaces of polyvector fields and polydifferential operators, respectively. Their corresponding cohomology groups $\cy{T}$ and $\cy{D}$ admit canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structures. We establish the following formality theorem for Lie pairs: there exists an $L_\infty$ quasi isomorphism from $\cx{T}$ to $\cx{D}$ whose first Taylor coefficient is equal to $\operatorname{hkr}\circ\td$. Here $\td$ acts on $\cx{T}$ by contraction. Furthermore, we prove a Kontsevich--Duflo type theorem for Lie pairs: the Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg map twisted by the square root of the Todd class of the Lie pair $(L,A)$ is an isomorphism of Gerstenhaber algebras from $\cy{T}$ to $\cy{D}$. As applications, we establish formality theorems and Kontsevich--Duflo type theorems for complex manifolds, foliations, and $\mathfrak{g}$-manifolds. In the case of complex manifolds, we recover the Kontsevich--Duflo theorem of complex geometry.

Shifted derived Poisson manifolds associated with Lie pairs

We study the shifted analogue of the "Lie--Poisson" construction for $L_\infty$ algebroids and we prove that any $L_\infty$ algebroid naturally gives rise to shifted derived Poisson manifolds. We also investigate derived Poisson structures from a purely algebraic perspective and, in particular, we establish a homotopy transfer theorem for derived Poisson algebras. As an application, we prove that, given a Lie pair $(L,A)$, the space $\operatorname{tot}Ω^{\bullet}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A))$ admits a degree $(+1)$ derived Poisson algebra structure with the wedge product as associative multiplication and the Chevalley--Eilenberg differential $d_A^{\operatorname{Bott}}:Ω^{\bullet}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A))\to Ω^{\bullet +1}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A))$ as unary $L_\infty$ bracket. This degree $(+1)$ derived Poisson algebra structure on $\operatorname{tot}Ω^{\bullet}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A))$ is unique up to an isomorphism having the identity map as first Taylor coefficient. Consequently, the Chevalley--Eilenberg hypercohomology $\mathbb{H}(Ω^{\bullet}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A)),d_A^{\operatorname{Bott}})$ admits a canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structure.

The Kirchhoff Index of Enhanced Hypercubes

Let $\{e_{1},\ldots,e_{n}\}$ be the standard basis of abelian group $Z_{2}^{n}$, which can be also viewed as a linear space of dimension $n$ over the Galois filed $F_{2}$, and $ε_{k}=e_k+e_{k+1}+\cdots+e_n$ for some $1\le k\le n-1$. It is well known that the so called enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}(1\le k \le n-1)$ is just the Cayley graph $Cay(Z_{2}^{n},S)$ where $S=\{e_{1},\ldots, e_{n},ε_{k}\}$. In this paper, we obtain the spectrum of $Q_{n, k}$, from which we give an exact formula of the Kirchhoff index of the enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}$. Furthermore, we prove that, for a given $n$, $Kf(Q_{n, k})$ is increased with the increase of $k$. Finally, we get $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\frac{Kf(Q_{n, k})}{\frac{2^{2n}}{n+1}}=1$.

Atiyah and Todd classes arising from integrable distributions

In this paper, we study the Atiyah class and Todd class of the DG manifold $(F[1],d_F)$ corresponding to an integrable distribution $F \subset T_{\mathbb{K}} M = TM \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} \mathbb{K}$, where $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. We show that these two classes are canonically identical to those of the Lie pair $(T_{\mathbb{K}} M, F)$. As a consequence, the Atiyah class of a complex manifold $X$ is isomorphic to the Atiyah class of the corresponding DG manifold $(T^{0,1}_X[1],\bar{\partial})$. Moreover, if $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold, then the Todd class of $X$ is also isomorphic to the Todd class of the corresponding DG manifold $(T^{0,1}_X[1],\bar{\partial})$.

Ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation

An arbitrary unknown quantum state cannot be precisely measured or perfectly replicated. However, quantum teleportation allows faithful transfer of unknown quantum states from one object to another over long distance, without physical travelling of the object itself. Long-distance teleportation has been recognized as a fundamental element in protocols such as large-scale quantum networks and distributed quantum computation. However, the previous teleportation experiments between distant locations were limited to a distance on the order of 100 kilometers, due to photon loss in optical fibres or terrestrial free-space channels. An outstanding open challenge for a global-scale "quantum internet" is to significantly extend the range for teleportation. A promising solution to this problem is exploiting satellite platform and space-based link, which can conveniently connect two remote points on the Earth with greatly reduced channel loss because most of the photons' propagation path is in empty space. Here, we report the first quantum teleportation of independent single-photon qubits from a ground observatory to a low Earth orbit satellite - through an up-link channel - with a distance up to 1400 km. To optimize the link efficiency and overcome the atmospheric turbulence in the up-link, a series of techniques are developed, including a compact ultra-bright source of multi-photon entanglement, narrow beam divergence, high-bandwidth and high-accuracy acquiring, pointing, and tracking (APT). We demonstrate successful quantum teleportation for six input states in mutually unbiased bases with an average fidelity of 0.80+/-0.01, well above the classical limit. This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum internet.

Formality for g-manifolds

To any $\mathfrak{g}$-manifold $M$ are associated two dglas $\operatorname{tot}\big(Λ^{\bullet} \mathfrak{g}^\vee \otimes_{\Bbbk} T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \big)$ and $\operatorname{tot} \big(Λ^{\bullet} \mathfrak{g}^\vee\otimes_{\Bbbk} D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \big)$, whose cohomologies $H_{\operatorname{CE}}(\mathfrak{g}, T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \xrightarrow{0} T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet+1})$ and $H_{\operatorname{CE}}(\mathfrak{g}, D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \xrightarrow{0} D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet+1})$ are Gerstenhaber algebras. We establish a formality theorem for $\mathfrak{g}$-manifolds: there exists an $L_\infty$ quasi-isomorphism $Φ: \operatorname{tot}\big(Λ^{\bullet} \mathfrak{g}^\vee \otimes_{\Bbbk} T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \big) \to \operatorname{tot} \big(Λ^{\bullet} \mathfrak{g}^\vee\otimes_{\Bbbk} D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \big)$ whose first `Taylor coefficient' (1) is equal to the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg map twisted by the square root of the Todd cocycle of the $\mathfrak{g}$-manifold $M$ and (2) induces an isomorphism of Gerstenhaber algebras on the level of cohomology. Consequently, the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg map twisted by the square root of the Todd class of the $\mathfrak{g}$-manifold $M$ is an isomorphism of Gerstenhaber algebras from $H_{\operatorname{CE}}(\mathfrak{g}, T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \xrightarrow{0} T_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet+1})$ to $H_{\operatorname{CE}}(\mathfrak{g}, D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet} \xrightarrow{0} D_{\operatorname{poly}}^{\bullet+1})$.

The Lackadaisical Quantum Walker is NOT Lazy at all

In this paper, we study the properties of lackadaisical quantum walks on a line. This model is first proposed in~\cite{wong2015grover} as a quantum analogue of lazy random walks where each vertex is attached $τ$ self-loops. We derive an analytic expression for the localization probability of the walker at the origin after infinite steps, and obtain the peak velocities of the walker. We also calculate rigorously the wave function of the walker starting from the origin and obtain a long time approximation for the entire probability density function. As an application of the density function, we prove that lackadaisical quantum walks spread ballistically for arbitrary $τ$, and give an analytic solution for the variance of the walker's probability distribution.
