String topology for stacks

We establish the general machinery of string topology for differentiable stacks. This machinery allows us to treat on an equal footing free loops in stacks and hidden loops. In particular, we give a good notion of a free loop stack, and of a mapping stack $\map(Y,\XX)$, where $Y$ is a compact space and $\XX$ a topological stack, which is functorial both in $\XX$ and $Y$ and behaves well enough with respect to pushouts. We also construct a bivariant (in the sense of Fulton and MacPherson) theory for topological stacks: it gives us a flexible theory of Gysin maps which are automatically compatible with pullback, pushforward and products. Further we prove an excess formula in this context. We introduce oriented stacks, generalizing oriented manifolds, which are stacks on which we can do string topology. We prove that the homology of the free loop stack of an oriented stack and the homology of hidden loops (sometimes called ghost loops) are a Frobenius algebra which are related by a natural morphism of Frobenius algebras. We also prove that the homology of free loop stack has a natural structure of a BV-algebra, which together with the Frobenius structure fits into an homological conformal field theories with closed positive boundaries. Using our general machinery, we construct an intersection pairing for (non necessarily compact) almost complex orbifolds which is in the same relation to the intersection pairing for manifolds as Chen-Ruan orbifold cup-product is to ordinary cup-product of manifolds. We show that the hidden loop product of almost complex is isomorphic to the orbifold intersection pairing twisted by a canonical class. Finally we gave some examples including the case of the classifying stacks $[*/G]$ of a compact Lie group.

Experimental Test of Bell inequalities with Six-Qubit Graph States

We report on the experimental realization of two different Bell inequality tests based on six-qubit linear-type and Y-shape graph states. For each of these states, the Bell inequalities tested are optimal in the sense that they provide the maximum violation among all Bell inequalities with stabilizing observables and possess the maximum resistance to noise.

Cohomology of Lie 2-groups

In this paper we study the cohomology of (strict) Lie 2-groups. We obtain an explicit Bott-Shulman type map in the case of a Lie 2-group corresponding to the crossed module $A\to 1$. The cohomology of the Lie 2-groups corresponding to the universal crossed modules $G\to \Aut(G)$ and $G\to \Aut^+(G)$ is the abutment of a spectral sequence involving the cohomology of $GL(n,\Z)$ and $SL(n,\Z)$. When the dimension of the center of $G$ is less than 3, we compute explicitly these cohomology groups. We also compute the cohomology of the Lie 2-group corresponding to a crossed module $G\to H$ whose kernel is compact and cokernel is connected, simply connected and compact and apply the result to the string 2-group.

Experimental Realization of a Controlled-NOT Gate with Four-Photon Six-Qubit Cluster States

We experimentally demonstrate an optical controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate with arbitrary single inputs based on a 4-photon 6-qubit cluster state entangled both in polarization and spatial modes. We first generate the 6-qubit state, and then by performing single-qubit measurements the CNOT gate is applied to arbitrary single input qubits. To characterize the performance of the gate, we estimate its quantum process fidelity and prove its entangling capability. The results show that the gate cannot be reproduced by local operations and classical communication. Our experiment shows that cluster states are promising candidates for efficient optical quantum computation.

Geometry of Maurer-Cartan Elements on Complex Manifolds

The semi-classical data attached to stacks of algebroids in the sense of Kashiwara and Kontsevich are Maurer-Cartan elements on complex manifolds, which we call extended Poisson structures as they generalize holomorphic Poisson structures. A canonical Lie algebroid is associated to each Maurer-Cartan element. We study the geometry underlying these Maurer-Cartan elements in the light of Lie algebroid theory. In particular, we extend Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology and Koszul-Brylinski homology to the realm of extended Poisson manifolds; we establish a sufficient criterion for these to be finite dimensional; we describe how homology and cohomology are related through the Evens-Lu-Weinstein duality module; and we describe a duality on Koszul-Brylinski homology, which generalizes the Serre duality of Dolbeault cohomology.

On Regular Courant Algebroids

For any regular Courant algebroid, we construct a characteristic class a la Chern-Weil. This intrinsic invariant of the Courant algebroid is a degree-3 class in its naive cohomology. When the Courant algebroid is exact, it reduces to the Severa class (in H^3_{DR}(M)). On the other hand, when the Courant algebroid is a quadratic Lie algebra g, it coincides with the class of the Cartan 3-form (in H^3(g)). We also give a complete classification of regular Courant algebroids and discuss its relation to the characteristic class.

The ring structure for equivariant twisted K-theory

We prove, under some mild conditions, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group of a crossed module admits a ring structure if the twisting 2-cocycle is 2-multiplicative. We also give an explicit construction of the transgression map $T_1: H^*(Γ;A) \to H^{*-1}((N\rtimes Γ;A)$ for any crossed module $N\to Γ$ and prove that any element in the image is $\infty$-multiplicative. As a consequence, we prove that, under some mild conditions, for a crossed module $N \to \gm$ and any $e \in \check{Z}^3(Γ;S^1)$, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group $K^*_{e,Γ}(N)$ admits a ring structure. As an application, we prove that for a compact, connected and simply connected Lie group G, the equivariant twisted K-theory group $K_{[c], G}^* (G)$ is endowed with a canonical ring structure $K^{i+d}_{[c],G}(G)\otimes K^{j+d}_{[c],G}(G)\to K^{i+j+d}_{[c], G}(G)$, where $d=dim G$ and $[c]\in H^2(G\rtimes G;S^1)$.

Differentiable Stacks and Gerbes

We introduce differentiable stacks and explain the relationship with Lie groupoids. Then we study $S^1$-bundles and $S^1$-gerbes over differentiable stacks. In particular, we establish the relationship between $S^1$-gerbes and groupoid $S^1$-central extensions. We define connections and curvings for groupoid $S^1$-central extensions extending the corresponding notions of Brylinski, Hitchin and Murray for $S^1$-gerbes over manifolds. We develop a Chern-Weil theory of characteristic classes in this general setting by presenting a construction of Chern classes and Dixmier-Douady classes in terms of analogues of connections and curvatures. We also describe a prequantization result for both $S^1$-bundles and $S^1$-gerbes extending the well-known result of Weil and Kostant. In particular, we give an explicit construction of $S^1$-central extensions with prescribed curvature-like data.

Non Abelian Differentiable Gerbes

We study non-abelian differentiable gerbes over stacks using the theory of Lie groupoids. More precisely, we develop the theory of connections on Lie groupoid $G$-extensions, which we call "connections on gerbes", and study the induced connections on various associated bundles. We also prove analogues of the Bianchi identities. In particular, we develop a cohomology theory which measures the existence of connections and curvings for $G$-gerbes over stacks. We also introduce $G$-central extensions of groupoids, generalizing the standard groupoid $S^1$-central extensions. As an example, we apply our theory to study the differential geometry of $G$-gerbes over a manifold.

Hamiltonian spaces for Manin pairs over manifolds

We introduce the notion of Hamiltonian spaces for Manin pairs over manifolds, using the so-called generalized Dirac structures. As an example, we describe Hamiltonian spaces of a quasi-Lie bialgebroid using this general framework. We also discuss reduction of Hamiltonian spaces of this general type.

Experimental demonstration of a hyper-entangled ten-qubit Schrödinger cat state

Coherent manipulation of an increasing number of qubits for the generation of entangled states has been an important goal and benchmark in the emerging field of quantum information science. The multiparticle entangled states serve as physical resources for measurement-based quantum computing and high-precision quantum metrology. However, their experimental preparation has proved extremely challenging. To date, entangled states up to six, eight atoms, or six photonic qubits have been demonstrated. Here, by exploiting both the photons' polarization and momentum degrees of freedom, we report the creation of hyper-entangled six-, eight-, and ten-qubit Schrödinger cat states. We characterize the cat states by evaluating their fidelities and detecting the presence of genuine multi-partite entanglement. Small modifications of the experimental setup will allow the generation of various graph states up to ten qubits. Our method provides a shortcut to expand the effective Hilbert space, opening up interesting applications such as quantum-enhanced super-resolving phase measurement, graph-state generation for anyonic simulation and topological error correction, and novel tests of nonlocality with hyper-entanglement.

Holomorphic Poisson Manifolds and Holomorphic Lie Algebroids

We study holomorphic Poisson manifolds and holomorphic Lie algebroids from the viewpoint of real Poisson geometry. We give a characterization of holomorphic Poisson structures in terms of the Poisson Nijenhuis structures of Magri-Morosi and describe a double complex which computes the holomorphic Poisson cohomology. A holomorphic Lie algebroid structure on a vector bundle $A\to X$ is shown to be equivalent to a matched pair of complex Lie algebroids $(T^{0,1}X,A^{1,0})$, in the sense of Lu. The holomorphic Lie algebroid cohomology of $A$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of the elliptic Lie algebroid $T^{0,1}X\bowtie A^{1,0}$. In the case when $(X,π)$ is a holomorphic Poisson manifold and $A=(T^*X)_π$, such an elliptic Lie algebroid coincides with the Dirac structure corresponding to the associated generalized complex structure of the holomorphic Poisson manifold.

Reduction of Generalized Complex Structures

We study reduction of generalized complex structures. More precisely, we investigate the following question. Let $J$ be a generalized complex structure on a manifold $M$, which admits an action of a Lie group $G$ preserving $J$. Assume that $M_0$ is a $G$-invariant smooth submanifold and the $G$-action on $M_0$ is proper and free so that $M_G:=M_0/G$ is a smooth manifold. Under what condition does $J$ descend to a generalized complex structure on $M_G$? We describe a sufficient condition for the reduction to hold, which includes the Marsden-Weinstein reduction of symplectic manifolds and the reduction of the complex structures in Kähler manifolds as special cases. As an application, we study reduction of generalized Kähler manifolds.

Integration of Holomorphic Lie Algebroids

We prove that a holomorphic Lie algebroid is integrable if, and only if, its underlying real Lie algebroid is integrable. Thus the integrability criteria of Crainic-Fernandes do also apply in the holomorphic context without any modification. As a consequence we give another proof of the following theorem: a holomorphic Poisson manifold is integrable if, and only if, its real (or imaginary) part is integrable as a real Poisson manifold.

Modular Classes of Loday Algebroids

We introduce the concept of Loday algebroids, a generalization of Courant algebroids. We define the naive cohomology and modular class of a Loday algebroid, and we show that the modular class of the double of a Lie bialgebroid vanishes. For Courant algebroids, we describe the relation between the naive and standard cohomologies and we conjecture that they are isomorphic when the Courant algebroid is transitive.

In these lecture notes, we give a quick account of the theory of Poisson groupoids and Lie bialgebroids. In particular, we discuss the universal lifting theorem and its applications including integration of quasi-Lie bialgebroids, integration of Poisson Nijenhuis structures and Alekseev and Kosmann-Schwarzbach's theory of D/G-momentum maps.

Poisson Quasi-Nijenhuis Manifolds

We introduce the notion of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds generalizing the Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds of Magri-Morosi. We also investigate the integration problem of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds. In particular, we prove that, under some topological assumption, Poisson (quasi)-Nijenhuis manifolds are in one-one correspondence with symplectic (quasi)-Nijenhuis groupoids. As an application, we study generalized complex structures in terms of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds. We prove that a generalized complex manifold corresponds to a special class of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures. As a consequence, we show that a generalized complex structure integrates to a symplectic quasi-Nijenhuis groupoid recovering a theorem of Crainic.

Chern-Weil map for principal bundles over groupoids

The theory of principal $G$-bundles over a Lie groupoid is an important one, unifying the various types of principal $G$-bundles, including those over manifolds, those over orbifolds, as well as equivariant principal $G$-bundles. In this paper, we study the differential geometry of these objects, including connections and holonomy maps. We also introduce a Chern-Weil map for these principal bundles and prove that the characteristic classes obtained coincide with the universal characteristic classes. As an application, we recover the equivariant Chern-Weil map of Bott-Tu. We also obtain an explicit chain map between the Weil model and the simplicial model of equivariant cohomology which reduces to the Bott-Shulman map $S({\mathfrak g}^*)^G \to H^*(BG)$ when the manifold is a point.
