Nonlinear inviscid damping for 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations

We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, this is the first global well-posedness result for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations.

A Golden Decade of Polar Codes: From Basic Principle to 5G Applications

After the pursuit of seventy years, the invention of polar codes indicates that we have found the first capacity-achieving coding with low complexity construction and decoding, which is the great breakthrough of the coding theory in the past two decades. In this survey, we retrospect the history of polar codes and summarize the advancement in the past ten years. First, the primary principle of channel polarization is investigated such that the basic construction, coding method, and classic successive cancellation (SC) decoding are reviewed. Second, in order to improve the performance of the finite code length, we introduce the guiding principle and conclude five design criteria for the construction, design, and implementation of the polar code in the practical communication system based on the exemplar schemes in the literature. Especially, we explain the design principle behind the concatenated coding and rate matching of polar codes in a 5G wireless system. Furthermore, the improved SC decoding algorithms, such as SC list (SCL) decoding and SC stack (SCS) decoding, etc., are investigated and compared. Finally, the research prospects of polar codes for the future 6G communication system are explored, including the optimization of short polar codes, coding construction in fading channels, polar coded modulation and HARQ, and the polar coded transmission, namely polar processing. Predictably, as a new coding methodology, polar codes will shine a light on communication theory and unveil a revolution in transmission technology.

Discrete scale invariance of the quasi-bound states at atomic vacancies in a topological material

Recently, log-periodic quantum oscillations have been detected in topological materials zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe5) and hafnium pentatelluride (HfTe5), displaying intriguing discrete scale invariance (DSI) characteristic. In condensed materials, the DSI is considered to be related to the quasi-bound states formed by massless Dirac fermions with strong Coulomb attraction, offering a feasible platform to study the long-pursued atomic-collapse phenomenon. Here, we demonstrate that a variety of atomic vacancies in the topological material HfTe5 can host the geometric quasi-bound states with DSI feature, resembling the artificial supercritical atom collapse. The density of states of these quasi-bound states are enhanced and the quasi-bound states are spatially distributed in the "orbitals" surrounding the vacancy sites, which are detected and visualized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/S). By applying the perpendicular magnetic fields, the quasi-bound states at lower energies become wider and eventually invisible, meanwhile the energies of quasi-bound states move gradually towards the Fermi energy (EF). These features are consistent with the theoretical prediction of a magnetic-field-induced transition from supercritical to subcritical states. The direct observation of geometric quasi-bound states sheds light on the deep understanding of the DSI in quantum materials.

Joint Communication, Sensing and Computation enabled 6G Intelligent Machine System

With the rapid development of the smart city, high-level autonomous driving, intelligent manufacturing, and etc., the stringent industrial-level requirements of the extremely low latency and high reliability for communication and new trends for sub-centimeter sensing have transcended the abilities of 5G and call for the development of 6G. Based on analyzing the function design of the communication, sensing and the emerging intelligent computation systems, we propose the joint communication, sensing and computation (JCSC) framework for 6G intelligent machine-type communication (IMTC) network to realize low latency and high reliability of communication, highly accurate sensing and fast environment adaption. In the proposed JCSC framework, the communication, sensing and computation abilities cooperate to benefit each other by utilizing the unified hardware, resource and protocol design. Sensing information is exploited as priori information to enhance the reliability and latency performance of wireless communication and to optimize the resource utilization of the communication network, which further improves the distributed computation and cooperative sensing ability. We propose the promising enabling technologies such as joint communication and sensing (JCS) technique, JCSC wireless networking techniques and intelligent computation techniques. We also summarize the challenges to achieve the JCSC framework. Then, we introduce the intelligent flexible manufacturing as a typical use case of the IMTC with JCSC framework, where the enabling technologies are deployed. Finally, we present the simulation results to prove the feasibility of the JCSC framework by evaluating the JCS waveform, the JCSC enabled neighbor discovery (ND) and medium access control (MAC).

FLYOVER: A Model-Driven Method to Generate Diverse Highway Interchanges for Autonomous Vehicle Testing

It has become a consensus that autonomous vehicles (AVs) will first be widely deployed on highways. However, the complexity of highway interchanges becomes the bottleneck for deploying AVs. An AV should be sufficiently tested under different highway interchanges, which is still challenging due to the lack of available datasets containing diverse highway interchanges. In this paper, we propose a model-driven method, FLYOVER, to generate a dataset consisting of diverse interchanges with measurable diversity coverage. First, FLYOVER proposes a labeled digraph to model the topology of an interchange. Second, FLYOVER takes real-world interchanges as input to guarantee topology practicality and extracts different topology equivalence classes by classifying the corresponding topology models. Third, for each topology class, FLYOVER identifies the corresponding geometrical features for the ramps and generates concrete interchanges using k-way combinatorial coverage and differential evolution. To illustrate the diversity and applicability of the generated interchange dataset, we test the built-in traffic flow control algorithm in SUMO and the fuel-optimization trajectory tracking algorithm deployed to Alibaba's autonomous trucks on the dataset. The results show that except for the geometrical difference, the interchanges are diverse in throughput and fuel consumption under the traffic flow control and trajectory tracking algorithms, respectively.

Fairness and Accuracy under Domain Generalization

As machine learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly used in high-stakes applications, concerns have arisen that they may be biased against certain social groups. Although many approaches have been proposed to make ML models fair, they typically rely on the assumption that data distributions in training and deployment are identical. Unfortunately, this is commonly violated in practice and a model that is fair during training may lead to an unexpected outcome during its deployment. Although the problem of designing robust ML models under dataset shifts has been widely studied, most existing works focus only on the transfer of accuracy. In this paper, we study the transfer of both fairness and accuracy under domain generalization where the data at test time may be sampled from never-before-seen domains. We first develop theoretical bounds on the unfairness and expected loss at deployment, and then derive sufficient conditions under which fairness and accuracy can be perfectly transferred via invariant representation learning. Guided by this, we design a learning algorithm such that fair ML models learned with training data still have high fairness and accuracy when deployment environments change. Experiments on real-world data validate the proposed algorithm. Model implementation is available at https://github.com/pth1993/FATDM.

Conditional generalized quantiles based on expected utility model and equivalent characterization of properties

As a counterpart to the (static) risk measures of generalized quantiles and motivated by Bellini et al. (2018), we propose a new kind of conditional risk measure called conditional generalized quantiles. We first show their well-definedness and they can be equivalently characterised by a conditional first order condition. We also discuss their main properties, and, especially, We give the characterization of coherency/convexity. For potential applications as a dynamic risk measure, we study their time consistency properties, and establish their equivalent characterizations among conditional generalized quantiles.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of Single-Server Database Over Quasi-static Rayleigh Fading Channel

Cloud database is the key technology in cloud computing. The effective and efficient service quality of the cloud database is inseparable from communication technology, just as improving communication quality will reduce the concurrency phenomenon in the ticketing system. In order to visually observe the impact of communication on the cloud database, we propose a Communication-Database (C-D) Model with a single-server database over the quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel, which consists of three parts: CLIENTS SOURCE, COMMUNICATION SYSTEM and DATABASE SYSTEM. This paper uses the queuing model, M/G/1//K, to model the whole system. The C-D Model is analyzed in two cases: nonlinearity and linearity, which correspond to some instances of SISO and MIMO. The simulation results of average staying time, average number of transactions and other performance characteristics are basically consistent with the theoretical results, which verifies the validity of the C-D Model. The comparison of these experimental results also proves that poor communication quality does lead to the reduction in the quality of service.

NOMA-aided Joint Communication, Sensing, and Multi-tier Computing Systems

A non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-aided joint communication, sensing, and multi-tier computing (JCSMC) framework is proposed. In this framework, a multi-functional base station (BS) carries out target sensing, while providing edge computing services to the nearby users. To enhance the computation efficiency, the multi-tier computing structure is exploited, where the BS can further offload the computation tasks to a powerful Cloud server (CS). The potential benefits of employing NOMA in the proposed JCSMC framework are investigated, which can maximize the computation offloading capacity and suppress the inter-function interference. Based on the proposed framework, the transmit beamformer of the BS and computation resource allocation at the BS and the CS are jointly optimized to maximize the computation rate subject to the communication-computation causality and the sensing quality constraints. Both partial and binary computation offloading modes are considered: 1) For the partial offloading mode, a weighted minimum mean square error based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the corresponding non-convex optimization problem. It is proved that a KKT optimal solution can be obtained; 2) For the binary offloading mode, the resultant highly-coupled mixed-integer optimization problem is first transformed to an equivalent but more tractable form. Then, the reformulated problem is solved by utilizing the alternating direction method of multipliers approach to obtain a nearly optimal solution. Finally, numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and the proposed NOMA-aided JCSMC framework

Variational Speech Waveform Compression to Catalyze Semantic Communications

We propose a novel neural waveform compression method to catalyze emerging speech semantic communications. By introducing nonlinear transform and variational modeling, we effectively capture the dependencies within speech frames and estimate the probabilistic distribution of the speech feature more accurately, giving rise to better compression performance. In particular, the speech signals are analyzed and synthesized by a pair of nonlinear transforms, yielding latent features. An entropy model with hyperprior is built to capture the probabilistic distribution of latent features, followed with quantization and entropy coding. The proposed waveform codec can be optimized flexibly towards arbitrary rate, and the other appealing feature is that it can be easily optimized for any differentiable loss function, including perceptual loss used in semantic communications. To further improve the fidelity, we incorporate residual coding to mitigate the degradation arising from quantization distortion at the latent space. Results indicate that achieving the same performance, the proposed method saves up to 27% coding rate than widely used adaptive multi-rate wideband (AMR-WB) codec as well as emerging neural waveform coding methods.

Semantic Communication for Internet of Vehicles: A Multi-User Cooperative Approach

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is expected to become the central infrastructure to provide advanced services to connected vehicles and users for higher transportation efficiency and security. A variety of emerging applications/services bring explosively growing demands for mobile data traffic between connected vehicles and roadside units (RSU), imposing the significant challenge of spectrum scarcity to IoV. In this paper, we propose a cooperative semantic-aware architecture to convey essential semantics from collaborated users to servers for lowering the data traffic. In contrast to current solutions that are mainly based on piling up highly complex signal processing techniques and multiple access capabilities in terms of syntactic communications, this paper puts forth the idea of semantic-aware content delivery in IoV. Specifically, the successful transmission of essential semantics of the source data is pursued, rather than the accurate reception of symbols regardless of its meaning as in conventional syntactic communications. To assess the benefits of the proposed architecture, we provide a case study of the image retrieval task for vehicles in intelligent transportation systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture outperforms the existing solutions with fewer radio resources, especially in a low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime, which can shed light on the potential of the proposed architecture in extending the applications in extreme environments.

5G PRS-Based Sensing: A Sensing Reference Signal Approach for Joint Sensing and Communication System

The emerging joint sensing and communication (JSC) technology is expected to support new applications and services, such as autonomous driving and extended reality (XR), in the future wireless communication systems. Pilot (or reference) signals in wireless communications usually have good passive detection performance, strong anti-noise capability and good auto-correlation characteristics, hence they bear the potential for applying in radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate how to apply the positioning reference signal (PRS) of the 5th generation (5G) mobile communications in radar sensing. This approach has the unique benefit of compatibility with the most advanced mobile communication system available so far. Thus, the PRS can be regarded as a sensing reference signal to simultaneously realize the functions of radar sensing, communication and positioning in a convenient manner. Firstly, we propose a PRS based radar sensing scheme and analyze its range and velocity estimation performance, based on which we propose a method that improves the accuracy of velocity estimation by using multiple frames. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the range and velocity estimation for PRS based radar sensing and the CRLB of the range estimation for PRS based positioning are derived. Our analysis and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of PRS over other pilot signals in radar sensing. Finally, some suggestions for the future 5G-Advanced and 6th generation (6G) frame structure design containing the sensing reference signal are derived based on our study.

Concurrent Downlink and Uplink Joint Communication and Sensing for 6G Networks

Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) is a promising technology for 6th Generation (6G) mobile networks, such as intelligent vehicular networks, intelligent manufacturing, and so on. Equipped with two spatially separated antenna arrays, the base station (BS) can perform downlink active JCAS in a mono-static setup. This paper proposes a Concurrent Downlink and Uplink (CDU) JCAS system where the BS can use the echo of transmitted dedicated signals for sensing in the uplink timeslot, while performing reliable uplink communication. A novel successive interference cancellation-based CDU JCAS processing method is proposed to enable the estimation of uplink communication symbols and downlink sensing parameters. Extensive simulation results verify the feasibility of the CDU JCAS system, showing a performance improvement of more than 10 dB compared to traditional JCAS methods while maintaining reliable uplink communication.

Sensing-aided Uplink Channel Estimation for Joint Communication and Sensing

The joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technique has drawn great attention due to its high spectrum efficiency by using the same transmit signal for both communication and sensing. Exploiting the correlation between the uplink (UL) channel and the sensing results, we propose a sensing-aided Kalman filter (SAKF)-based channel state information (CSI) estimation method for UL JCAS, which exploits the angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation to improve the CSI estimation accuracy. A Kalman filter (KF)-based CSI enhancement method is proposed to refine the least-square CSI estimation by exploiting the estimated AoA as the prior information. Simulation results show that the bit error rates (BER) of UL communication using the proposed SAKF-based CSI estimation method approach those using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method, while at significantly reduced complexity.

Multiple Signal Classification Based Joint Communication and Sensing System

Joint communication and sensing (JCS) has become a promising technology for mobile networks because of its higher spectrum and energy efficiency. Up to now, the prevalent fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based sensing method for mobile JCS networks is on-grid based, and the grid interval determines the resolution. Because the mobile network usually has limited consecutive OFDM symbols in a downlink (DL) time slot, the sensing accuracy is restricted by the limited resolution, especially for velocity estimation. In this paper, we propose a multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based JCS system that can achieve higher sensing accuracy for the angle of arrival, range, and velocity estimation, compared with the traditional FFT-based JCS method. We further propose a JCS channel state information (CSI) enhancement method by leveraging the JCS sensing results. Finally, we derive a theoretical lower bound for sensing mean square error (MSE) by using perturbation analysis. Simulation results show that in terms of the sensing MSE performance, the proposed MUSIC-based JCS outperforms the FFT-based one by more than 20 dB. Moreover, the bit error rate (BER) of communication demodulation using the proposed JCS CSI enhancement method is significantly reduced compared with communication using the originally estimated CSI.

Wireless Deep Speech Semantic Transmission

In this paper, we propose a new class of high-efficiency semantic coded transmission methods for end-to-end speech transmission over wireless channels. We name the whole system as deep speech semantic transmission (DSST). Specifically, we introduce a nonlinear transform to map the speech source to semantic latent space and feed semantic features into source-channel encoder to generate the channel-input sequence. Guided by the variational modeling idea, we build an entropy model on the latent space to estimate the importance diversity among semantic feature embeddings. Accordingly, these semantic features of different importance can be allocated with different coding rates reasonably, which maximizes the system coding gain. Furthermore, we introduce a channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) adaptation mechanism such that a single model can be applied over various channel states. The end-to-end optimization of our model leads to a flexible rate-distortion (RD) trade-off, supporting versatile wireless speech semantic transmission. Experimental results verify that our DSST system clearly outperforms current engineered speech transmission systems on both objective and subjective metrics. Compared with existing neural speech semantic transmission methods, our model saves up to 75% of channel bandwidth costs when achieving the same quality. An intuitive comparison of audio demos can be found at https://ximoo123.github.io/DSST.

Pushing AI to Wireless Network Edge: An Overview on Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation towards 6G

Pushing artificial intelligence (AI) from central cloud to network edge has reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the vision of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) in the sixth-generation (6G) era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence, which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the huge amount of data scattered at wireless network edge. In general, realizing edge intelligence corresponds to the process of sensing, communication, and computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and processing, respectively. However, conventional wireless networks design the sensing, communication, and computation separately in a task-agnostic manner, which encounters difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI applications such as auto-driving. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of seamless integrated sensing, communication, and computation (ISCC) in a task-oriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in the downstream AI applications. In view of its growing interest, this article provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the state-of-the-art development, and shedding light on the road ahead.

Nonlinear Transform Source-Channel Coding for Semantic Communications

In this paper, we propose a class of high-efficiency deep joint source-channel coding methods that can closely adapt to the source distribution under the nonlinear transform, it can be collected under the name nonlinear transform source-channel coding (NTSCC). In the considered model, the transmitter first learns a nonlinear analysis transform to map the source data into latent space, then transmits the latent representation to the receiver via deep joint source-channel coding. Our model incorporates the nonlinear transform as a strong prior to effectively extract the source semantic features and provide side information for source-channel coding. Unlike existing conventional deep joint source-channel coding methods, the proposed NTSCC essentially learns both the source latent representation and an entropy model as the prior on the latent representation. Accordingly, novel adaptive rate transmission and hyperprior-aided codec refinement mechanisms are developed to upgrade deep joint source-channel coding. The whole system design is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the end-to-end transmission rate-distortion performance under established perceptual quality metrics. Across test image sources with various resolutions, we find that the proposed NTSCC transmission method generally outperforms both the analog transmission using the standard deep joint source-channel coding and the classical separation-based digital transmission. Notably, the proposed NTSCC method can potentially support future semantic communications due to its content-aware ability and perceptual optimization goal.
