Way to Build Native AI-driven 6G Air Interface: Principles, Roadmap, and Outlook

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to serve as a foundational capability across the entire lifecycle of 6G networks, spanning design, deployment, and operation. This article proposes a native AI-driven air interface architecture built around two core characteristics: compression and adaptation. On one hand, compression enables the system to understand and extract essential semantic information from the source data, focusing on task relevance rather than symbol-level accuracy. On the other hand, adaptation allows the air interface to dynamically transmit semantic information across diverse tasks, data types, and channel conditions, ensuring scalability and robustness. This article first introduces the native AI-driven air interface architecture, then discusses representative enabling methodologies, followed by a case study on semantic communication in 6G non-terrestrial networks. Finally, it presents a forward-looking discussion on the future of native AI in 6G, outlining key challenges and research opportunities.

Neural Coding Is Not Always Semantic: Toward the Standardized Coding Workflow in Semantic Communications

Semantic communication, leveraging advanced deep learning techniques, emerges as a new paradigm that meets the requirements of next-generation wireless networks. However, current semantic communication systems, which employ neural coding for feature extraction from raw data, have not adequately addressed the fundamental question: Is general feature extraction through deep neural networks sufficient for understanding semantic meaning within raw data in semantic communication? This article is thus motivated to clarify two critical aspects: semantic understanding and general semantic representation. This article presents a standardized definition on semantic coding, an extensive neural coding scheme for general semantic representation that clearly represents underlying data semantics based on contextual modeling. With these general semantic representations obtained, both human- and machine-centric end-to-end data transmission can be achieved through only minimal specialized modifications, such as fine-tuning and regularization. This article contributes to establishing a commonsense that semantic communication extends far beyond mere feature transmission, focusing instead on conveying compact semantic representations through context-aware coding schemes.

Non-r-partite graphs without complete split subgraphs

The classical Simonovits' chromatic critical edge theorem shows that for sufficiently large $n$, if $H$ is an edge-color-critical graph with $χ(H)=p+1\ge 3$, then the Turán graph $T_{n,p}$ is the unique extremal graph with respect to ${\rm ex}(n,H)$. Denote by ${\rm EX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ and ${\rm SPEX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ the family of $n$-vertex $H$-free non-$r$-partite graphs with the maximum size and with the spectral radius, respectively. Li and Peng [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 37 (2023) 2462--2485] characterized the unique graph in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$ for $r\geq 2$ and showed that $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$. It is interesting to study the extremal or spectral extremal problems for color-critical graph $H$ in non-$r$-partite graphs. For $p\geq 2$ and $q\geq 1$, we call the graph $B_{p,q}:=K_p\nabla qK_1$ a complete split graph (or generalized book graph). In this note, we determine the unique spectral extremal graph in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})$ and show that $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})$ for sufficiently large $n$.

Adaptive Source-Channel Coding for Semantic Communications

Semantic communications (SemComs) have emerged as a promising paradigm for joint data and task-oriented transmissions, combining the demands for both the bit-accurate delivery and end-to-end (E2E) distortion minimization. However, current joint source-channel coding (JSCC) in SemComs is not compatible with the existing communication systems and cannot adapt to the variations of the sources or the channels, while separate source-channel coding (SSCC) is suboptimal in the finite blocklength regime. To address these issues, we propose an adaptive source-channel coding (ASCC) scheme for SemComs over parallel Gaussian channels, where the deep neural network (DNN)-based semantic source coding and conventional digital channel coding are separately deployed and adaptively designed. To enable efficient adaptation between the source and channel coding, we first approximate the E2E data and semantic distortions as functions of source coding rate and bit error ratio (BER) via logistic regression, where BER is further modeled as functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and channel coding rate. Then, we formulate the weighted sum E2E distortion minimization problem for joint source-channel coding rate and power allocation over parallel channels, which is solved by the successive convex approximation. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ASCC scheme outperforms typical deep JSCC and SSCC schemes for both the single- and parallel-channel scenarios while maintaining full compatibility with practical digital systems.

Physical Layer Authentication Based on Hierarchical Variational Auto-Encoder for Industrial Internet of Things

Recently, Physical Layer Authentication (PLA) has attracted much attention since it takes advantage of the channel randomness nature of transmission media to achieve communication confidentiality and authentication. In the complex environment, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), machine learning (ML) is widely employed with PLA to extract and analyze complex channel characteristics for identity authentication. However, most PLA schemes for IIoT require attackers' prior channel information, leading to severe performance degradation when the source of the received signals is unknown in the training stage. Thus, a channel impulse response (CIR)-based PLA scheme named "Hierarchical Variational Auto-Encoder (HVAE)" for IIoT is proposed in this article, aiming at achieving high authentication performance without knowing attackers' prior channel information even when trained on a few data in the complex environment. HVAE consists of an Auto-Encoder (AE) module for CIR characteristics extraction and a Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) module for improving the representation ability of the CIR characteristic and outputting the authentication results. Besides, a new objective function is constructed in which both the single-peak and the double-peak Gaussian distribution are taken into consideration in the VAE module. Moreover, the simulations are conducted under the static and mobile IIoT scenario, which verify the superiority of the proposed HVAE over three comparison PLA schemes even with a few training data.

Scalable High-Temperature Superconducting Diodes in Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

Superconducting diodes, characterized by nonreciprocal supercurrent transport, offer transformative opportunities for ultra-low-power circuits. However, achieving reliable operation at temperatures above liquid nitrogen remains a major challenge, limiting their practical applicability. Here, we present a scalable strategy for high-temperature superconducting diodes based on intrinsic Josephson junctions naturally present in a cuprate superconductor. We demonstrate that strong nonreciprocity arises not only from broken spatial and time-reversal symmetries, but also from enhanced anharmonicity in the current-phase relation, enabled by the atomically thin barrier of the intrinsic junction. The diode efficiency strongly depends on the number of stacked intrinsic junctions, with the highest efficiency occurring in single-junction devices. Notably, these high-temperature superconducting diodes are readily scalable to large arrays, marking a critical step toward practical implementation in energy-efficient computing architectures.

Conquering High Packet-Loss Erasure: MoE Swin Transformer-Based Video Semantic Communication

Semantic communication with joint semantic-channel coding robustly transmits diverse data modalities but faces challenges in mitigating semantic information loss due to packet drops in packet-based systems. Under current protocols, packets with errors are discarded, preventing the receiver from utilizing erroneous semantic data for robust decoding. To address this issue, a packet-loss-resistant MoE Swin Transformer-based Video Semantic Communication (MSTVSC) system is proposed in this paper. Semantic vectors are encoded by MSTVSC and transmitted through upper-layer protocol packetization. To investigate the impact of the packetization, a theoretical analysis of the packetization strategy is provided. To mitigate the semantic loss caused by packet loss, a 3D CNN at the receiver recovers missing information using un-lost semantic data and an packet-loss mask matrix. Semantic-level interleaving is employed to reduce concentrated semantic loss from packet drops. To improve compression, a common-individual decomposition approach is adopted, with downsampling applied to individual information to minimize redundancy. The model is lightweighted for practical deployment. Extensive simulations and comparisons demonstrate strong performance, achieving an MS-SSIM greater than 0.6 and a PSNR exceeding 20 dB at a 90% packet loss rate.

Integrating Biological Knowledge for Robust Microscopy Image Profiling on De Novo Cell Lines

High-throughput screening techniques, such as microscopy imaging of cellular responses to genetic and chemical perturbations, play a crucial role in drug discovery and biomedical research. However, robust perturbation screening for \textit{de novo} cell lines remains challenging due to the significant morphological and biological heterogeneity across cell lines. To address this, we propose a novel framework that integrates external biological knowledge into existing pretraining strategies to enhance microscopy image profiling models. Our approach explicitly disentangles perturbation-specific and cell line-specific representations using external biological information. Specifically, we construct a knowledge graph leveraging protein interaction data from STRING and Hetionet databases to guide models toward perturbation-specific features during pretraining. Additionally, we incorporate transcriptomic features from single-cell foundation models to capture cell line-specific representations. By learning these disentangled features, our method improves the generalization of imaging models to \textit{de novo} cell lines. We evaluate our framework on the RxRx database through one-shot fine-tuning on an RxRx1 cell line and few-shot fine-tuning on cell lines from the RxRx19a dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our method enhances microscopy image profiling for \textit{de novo} cell lines, highlighting its effectiveness in real-world phenotype-based drug discovery applications.

On Performance of LoRa Fluid Antenna Systems

This paper advocates a fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted long-range communication (LoRa-FAS) for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. \textcolor{blue}{In the proposed system, FAS provides spatial diversity gains for LoRa, eliminating the necessity for integrating multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies into the system. It consists of a traditional LoRa transmitter with a fixed-position antenna and a LoRa receiver employing the FAS (Rx-FAS). The pilot sequence overhead and placement for FAS are also considered. Specifically, we consider embedding pilot sequences within symbols to reduce the impact of pilot overhead on system throughput and the physical layer (PHY) frame structure, leveraging the fact that the pilot sequences do not convey source information and correlation detection at the LoRa receiver needs not be performed across the entire symbol. The achievable performance of LoRa-FAS is thoroughly analyzed under both coherent and non-coherent detection schemes.} We obtain new closed-form approximations for the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the FAS channel under the block-correlation model. Furthermore, the approximate SER, equivalently the bit error rate (BER), of the proposed LoRa-FAS is also derived in closed form. Simulation results indicate that substantial SER gains can be achieved by FAS within the LoRa framework, even with a limited size of FAS. In addition, our analytical results align well with Clarke's exact spatial correlation model. Finally, when utilizing the block-correlation model, we suggest that the correlation factor should be selected as the proportion of the eigenvalues of the exact correlation matrix greater than 1 for higher accuracy.

Multi-gap and high-Tc superconductivity in metal-atom-free borocarbides: Effects of dimensional confinement and strain engineering

Pure borocarbides suffer from limited superconducting potential due to intrinsic structural instability, requiring transition/alkali metals as dual-functional stabilizers and dopants. Here, by combining high-throughput screening with anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg (aME) theory, we identify dynamically stable borocarbides where high-Tc superconductivity predominately originates from E symmetry-selective electron-phonon coupling (EPC). The six distinct superconducting gaps emerge from a staircase distribution or uncoupling of EPC strength across each Fermi surface (FS) sheet, constituting a metal-free system with such high gap multiplicity. Crucially, dimensional reduction from bulk to surface strengthens E-symmetry EPC and enhances Tc from 32 K (3D bulk) to 75 K (2D surface), a result that highlights structural confinement as a key design strategy for observing high Tc. External strain further optimizes the competition between EPC strength and characteristic phonon frequency to achieve Tc > 90 K. This work reveals a systematic correlation between structural dimensionality and gap multiplicity and establishes borocarbide as a tunable platform to engineer both high-Tc and multi-gap superconductivity.

Token Communication in the Era of Large Models: An Information Bottleneck-Based Approach

This letter proposes UniToCom, a unified token communication paradigm that treats tokens as the fundamental units for both processing and wireless transmission. Specifically, to enable efficient token representations, we propose a generative information bottleneck (GenIB) principle, which facilitates the learning of tokens that preserve essential information while supporting reliable generation across multiple modalities. By doing this, GenIB-based tokenization is conducive to improving the communication efficiency and reducing computational complexity. Additionally, we develop $σ$-GenIB to address the challenges of variance collapse in autoregressive modeling, maintaining representational diversity and stability. Moreover, we employ a causal Transformer-based multimodal large language model (MLLM) at the receiver to unify the processing of both discrete and continuous tokens under the next-token prediction paradigm. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed UniToCom compared to baselines under dynamic channel conditions. By integrating token processing with MLLMs, UniToCom enables scalable and generalizable communication in favor of multimodal understanding and generation, providing a potential solution for next-generation intelligent communications.

Two-dimensional transition metal selenides family M2Se: A platform for superconductivity, band topology, and charge density waves

MXenes and MBenes, which are two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides/nitrides and borides, have been extensively studied for their impressive properties. Recently, we reported a family of transition metal sulfides MSene (M2S) with rich properties [Phys. Rev. B 111, L041404 (2025)], it is worth studying whether selenides with similar structure also have rich properties. In this work, through high-throughput screening, we present a novel family of 2D transition metal selenides, M2Se. In this family, there are fifty-eight candidate materials, of which ten are stable and metallic. Notably, eight exhibit superconductivity, among which four are superconducting topological metals. Besides, eight show charge density wave (CDW) behavior, among which five also exhibit antiferromagnetism. It is revealed that CDW originates from electron-phonon coupling rather than Fermi surface nesting. Moreover, strain can be applied to regulate the competition between CDW and superconductivity. Our findings reveal the rich properties of superconductivity, band topology, CDW, and magnetism in M2Se, providing a new platform for the controllable integration of multifunctional quantum states.

SPD-CFL: Stepwise Parameter Dropout for Efficient Continual Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a collaborative machine learning paradigm for training models on local sensitive data with privacy protection. Pre-trained transformer-based models have emerged as useful foundation models (FMs) to be fine-tuned for a wide range of downstream tasks. However, large-scale pre-trained models make it challenging for traditional FL due to high communication overhead in the resource-constrained IoT. This has inspired the field of parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) research. Existing PEFT methods attempt to optimize model performance at the given dropout level. Such an approach places the burden on human users to find a dropout rate that provides a satisfactory level of performance through trial-and-error, which is time consuming and resource intensive. To address this limitation, we propose the Step-wise Parameter Dropout for Continual Federated Learning (SPD-CFL) approach. Instead of pre-defining a desired dropout rate, it allows users to specify the target level of performance and then attempts to find the most suitable dropout rate for the given FL model. Specifically, on the server side, SPD-CFL drops trainable parameters in a stepwise manner to improve communication efficiency by reducing the rank of low-rank adaptation (LoRA). The sensitivity-based gradient consistency (SGC) measure is designed to facilitate the adaptive adjustment of parameter dropout. In addition, SPD-CFL introduces continual learning (CL) on the client side to mitigate performance degradation due to the inconsistent optima with distinct parameter dropout rates under heterogeneous FL. Extensive experiments on the public benchmark dataset CIFAR-10 and a real-world medical Face dataset demonstrate significant superiority of SPD-CFL over state-of-the-art methods. Compared to the best-performing baseline, it achieves a 2.07% higher test AUC while reducing communication overhead by 29.53%.

Nonmagnetic ground state of marcasite FeTe$_{2}$: The competition between crystal field splitting and on-site Coulomb repulsion

The magnetic ground states in crystalline systems are significant for both fundamental condensed matter physics and practical materials engineering. Marcasite FeTe$_{2}$, characterized as a small-gap semiconductor, exhibits anomalous magnetic behaviors in low-temperature experiments. In this study, first-principles density functional theory calculations combined with scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy are employed to investigate the magnetic ground state of marcasite FeTe$_{2}$. It is revealed that the competition between crystal field splitting and on-site Coulomb repulsion plays the key role in the formation of localized magnetic moments in FeTe$_{2}$. The ground state of FeTe$_{2}$ bulk is confirmed to be nonmagnetic, while the magnetic responses of FeTe$_{2}$ observed at low temperature are suggested to be related to the magnetic Fe atoms on the crystal surfaces. Our work proposes a straightforward competing mechanism for determining ground-state magnetism of various localized-moment crystalline systems.

A Novel Indicator for Quantifying and Minimizing Information Utility Loss of Robot Teams

The timely exchange of information among robots within a team is vital, but it can be constrained by limited wireless capacity. The inability to deliver information promptly can result in estimation errors that impact collaborative efforts among robots. In this paper, we propose a new metric termed Loss of Information Utility (LoIU) to quantify the freshness and utility of information critical for cooperation. The metric enables robots to prioritize information transmissions within bandwidth constraints. We also propose the estimation of LoIU using belief distributions and accordingly optimize both transmission schedule and resource allocation strategy for device-to-device transmissions to minimize the time-average LoIU within a robot team. A semi-decentralized Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient framework is developed, where each robot functions as an actor responsible for scheduling transmissions among its collaborators while a central critic periodically evaluates and refines the actors in response to mobility and interference. Simulations validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating an enhancement of information freshness and utility by 98%, compared to alternative methods.

Convergence-Privacy-Fairness Trade-Off in Personalized Federated Learning

Personalized federated learning (PFL), e.g., the renowned Ditto, strikes a balance between personalization and generalization by conducting federated learning (FL) to guide personalized learning (PL). While FL is unaffected by personalized model training, in Ditto, PL depends on the outcome of the FL. However, the clients' concern about their privacy and consequent perturbation of their local models can affect the convergence and (performance) fairness of PL. This paper presents PFL, called DP-Ditto, which is a non-trivial extension of Ditto under the protection of differential privacy (DP), and analyzes the trade-off among its privacy guarantee, model convergence, and performance distribution fairness. We also analyze the convergence upper bound of the personalized models under DP-Ditto and derive the optimal number of global aggregations given a privacy budget. Further, we analyze the performance fairness of the personalized models, and reveal the feasibility of optimizing DP-Ditto jointly for convergence and fairness. Experiments validate our analysis and demonstrate that DP-Ditto can surpass the DP-perturbed versions of the state-of-the-art PFL models, such as FedAMP, pFedMe, APPLE, and FedALA, by over 32.71% in fairness and 9.66% in accuracy.

SatHealth: A Multimodal Public Health Dataset with Satellite-based Environmental Factors

Living environments play a vital role in the prevalence and progression of diseases, and understanding their impact on patient's health status becomes increasingly crucial for developing AI models. However, due to the lack of long-term and fine-grained spatial and temporal data in public and population health studies, most existing studies fail to incorporate environmental data, limiting the models' performance and real-world application. To address this shortage, we developed SatHealth, a novel dataset combining multimodal spatiotemporal data, including environmental data, satellite images, all-disease prevalences estimated from medical claims, and social determinants of health (SDoH) indicators. We conducted experiments under two use cases with SatHealth: regional public health modeling and personal disease risk prediction. Experimental results show that living environmental information can significantly improve AI models' performance and temporal-spatial generalizability on various tasks. Finally, we deploy a web-based application to provide an exploration tool for SatHealth and one-click access to both our data and regional environmental embedding to facilitate plug-and-play utilization. SatHealth is now published with data in Ohio, and we will keep updating SatHealth to cover the other parts of the US. With the web application and published code pipeline, our work provides valuable angles and resources to include environmental data in healthcare research and establishes a foundational framework for future research in environmental health informatics.

Toward Low-Altitude Airspace Management and UAV Operations: Requirements, Architecture and Enabling Technologies

The low-altitude economy (LAE) is rapidly advancing toward intelligence, connectivity, and coordination, bringing new challenges in dynamic airspace management, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operation, and security management. Existing systems remain fragmented and lack effective coordination. To bridge these gaps, we propose UTICN (Ubiquitous and Trusted Intelligent Cellular-native Network) for LAE, a unified cellular-native architecture that integrates multi-domain sensing, high-precision positioning, intelligent aircraft-to-everything communication, dynamic airspace management, and UAV operational services. UTICN introduces key technologies such as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), passive and active positioning, intelligent machine communication, swarm coordination, and control-data decoupled management frameworks. We demonstrate UTICN's feasibility through two use cases, i.e., a city-level LAE management platform and a multi-frequency collaborative ISAC system. This work provides a fundamental reference for building a unified operational foundation and airspace management architecture for the LAE.
