Simulation of state evolutions in Gross-Neveu model by matrix product state representation

A quantum algorithm to simulate the real time dynamics of two-flavor massive Gross-Neveu model is presented in Schrodinger picture. We implement the simulation on a classic computer by applying the matrix product state representation. The real time evolutions of up to four particles on a site in initial state are figured out in space-time coordinate. The state evolutions are effectively affected by fermion mass and coupling constant of the model. Especially when the mass of fermion is small enough and the coupling is strong enough, the fundamental fermions evolve synchronistically in space from the two-fermion and four-fermion initial states. These are also the conditions on which the bound states made up of fundamental fermion pairs were found to arise automatically in the literatures.

Weak-to-strong transition of quantum measurement in a trapped-ion system

Quantum measurement remains a puzzle through its stormy history from the birth of quantum mechanics to state-of-the-art quantum technologies. Two complementary measurement schemes have been widely investigated in a variety of quantum systems: von Neumann's projective 'strong' measurement and Aharonov's weak measurement. Here, we report the observation of a weak-to-strong measurement transition in a single trapped $40Ca^+$ ion system. The transition is realized by tuning the interaction strength between the ion's internal electronic state and its vibrational motion, which play the roles of the measured system and the measuring pointer, respectively. By pre- and post-selecting the internal state, a pointer state composed of two of the ion's motional wavepackets is obtained, and its central-position shift, which corresponds to the measurement outcome, demonstrates the transition from the weak-value asymptotes to the expected-value asymptotes. Quantitatively, the weak-to-strong measurement transition is characterized by a universal transition factor $e^{-Γ^2}$, where $Γ$ is a dimensionless parameter related to the system-apparatus coupling. This transition, which continuously connects weak measurements and strong measurements, may open new experimental possibilities to test quantum foundations and prompt us to re-examine and improve the measurement schemes of related quantum technologies.

Geometric phase and topological phase diagram of the one-dimensional $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin chain in a longitudinal field

In this paper, we determine the geometric phase for the one-dimensional $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain with spin-$1/2$, the exchange couple $J$ and the spin anisotropy parameter $Δ$ in a longitudinal field(LF) with the reduced field strength $h$. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation and the mean-field theory based on the Wick's theorem, a semi-analytical theory has been developed in terms of order parameters which satisfy the self-consistent equations. The values of the order parameters are numerically computed using the matrix-product-state(MPS) method. The validity of the mean-filed theory could be checked through the comparison between the self-consistent solutions and the numerical results. Finally, we draw the the topological phase diagrams in the case $J<0$ and the case $J>0$.

Two-qubit controlled-PHASE Rydberg blockade gate protocol for neutral atoms via off-resonant modulated driving within a single pulse

Neutral atom array serves as an ideal platform to study the quantum logic gates, where intense efforts have been devoted to improve the two-qubit gate fidelity. We report our recent findings in constructing a different type of two-qubit controlled-PHASE quantum gate protocol with neutral atoms enabled by Rydberg blockade, which aims at both robustness and high-fidelity. It relies upon modulated driving pulse with specially tailored smooth waveform to gain appropriate phase accumulations for quantum gates. The major features include finishing gate operation within a single pulse, not necessarily requiring individual site addressing, not sensitive to the exact value of blockade shift while suppressing population leakage error and rotation error. We anticipate its fidelity to be reasonably high under realistic considerations for errors such as atomic motion, laser power fluctuation, power imbalance, spontaneous emission and so on. Moreover, we hope that such type of protocol may inspire future improvements in quantum gate designs for other categories of qubit platforms and new applications in other areas of quantum optimal control.

Geometric phase of the one-dimensional Ising chain in a longitudinal field

For the one-dimensional Ising chain with spin-$1/2$ and exchange couple $J$ in a steady transverse field(TF), an analytical theory has well been developed in terms of some topological order parameters such as Berry phase(BP). For a TF Ising chain, the nonzero BP which depends on the exchange couple and the field strength characterizes the corresponding symmetry breaking of parity and time reversal(PT). However, there seems to exist a topological phase transition for the one-dimensional Ising chain in a longitudinal field(LF) with the reduced field strength $ε$. If the LF is added at zero temperature, researchers believe that the LF also could influence the PT-symmetry and there exists the discontinuous BP. But the theoretic characterization has not been well founded. This paper tries to aim at this problem. With the Jordan-Wigner transformation, we give the four-fermion interaction form of the Hamiltonian in the one-dimensional Ising chain with a LF. Further by the method of Wick's theorem and the mean-field theory, the four-fermion interaction is well dealt with. We solve the ground state energy and the ground wave function in the momentum space. We discuss the BP and suggest that there exist nonzero BPs when $ε=0$ in the paramagnetic case where $J<0$ and when $-1<ε<1$, in the diamagnetic case where $J>0$.

Quantum simulation of the Weyl equation with a trapped ion

The Weyl equation describes chiral massless relativistic particles, called Weyl fermions, which have important relations to neutrinos. A direct observation of the dynamics of Weyl fermions in an experiment is difficult to achieve. This study investigates a method of simulating the Weyl equation in 1+2-dimension by a single trapped ion. The predictions about a two-dimensional Zitterbewegung and an especially interesting phenomenon of Weyl fermions can be tested by the future trapped ion experiment, which might enhance our understanding of neutrinos.

Analysis of quantum interface between Rydberg-blocked atomic ensemble and cavity optical field with two-photon transition

We study the atom-photon quantum interface with intracavity Rydberg-blocked atomic ensemble where the ground-Rydberg transition is realized by two-photon transition. Via theoretical analysis, we report our recent findings of the Jaynes-Cummings model on optical domain and robust atom-photon quantum gate enabled by this platform. The requirement on the implementation is mild which includes an optical cavity of moderately high finesse, typical alkali atoms such as Rb or Cs and the condition that cold atomic ensemble is well within the Rydberg blockade radius. The analysis focuses on the atomic ensemble's collective coupling to the quantized optical field in the cavity mode. We demonstrate its capability to serve as a controlled-PHASE gate between photonic qubits and matter qubits. The detrimental effects associated with several major decoherence factors of this system are also considered in the analysis.

Polarization induced interference within electromagnetically induced transparency for atoms of double-V linkage

People have been paying attention to the role of atoms' complex internal level structures in the research of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for a long time, where the various degenerate Zeeman levels usually generate complex linkage patterns for the atomic transitions. It turns out, with special choices of the atomic states and the atomic transitions' linkage structure, clear signatures of quantum interference induced by the probe and coupling light's polarizations can emerge from a typical EIT phenomena. We propose to study a four state system with double-V linkage pattern for the transitions and analyze the polarization induced interference under the EIT condition. We show that such interference arises naturally under mild conditions on the optical field and atom manipulation. Its anticipated properties and its potential application of all optical switching in polarization degree of freedom are also discussed. Moreover, we construct a variation form of double-M linkage pattern where the polarization induced interference enables polarization-dependent cross-modulation between incident lights that can be effective even at the few-photon level. The theme is to gain more insight into the essential question: how can we build non-trivial optical medium where incident lights will induce polarization-dependent non-linear optical interactions, covering a wide range of the incidence intensity from the many-photon level to the few-photon level, respectively.

A theoretical analysis of extending frequency-bin entanglement from photon-photon to atom-photon hybrid systems

Inspired by the recent developments in the research of atom-photon quantum interface and energy-time entanglement between single photon pulses, we propose to establish the concept of a special energy-time entanglement between a single photon pulse and internal states of a single atom, which is analogous to the frequency-bin entanglement between single photon pulses. We show that this type of entanglement arises naturally in the interaction between frequency-bin entangled single photon pulse pair and a single atom, via straightforward atom-photon phase gate operations. We also discuss the properties of this type of entanglement and show a preliminary example of its potential application in quantum networking. Moreover, a quantum entanglement witness is constructed to detect such entanglement from a reasonably large set of separable states.

Realization of GHZ-like and W-like Third-order Spatial Correlation with Classical Light

The spatial correlation with classical lights, which has some similar aspects as that with entangled lights, is an interesting and fundamentally important topic. But the features of high-order spatial correlation with classical lights are not well known, and the types of high-order correlations produced are of limit. Here, we propose a scheme to produce third-order spatial correlated states by modulating the phases of three laser beams. With the scheme we can produce Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type (GHZ-type) and W-type spatial correlations with different phase modulations. Our scheme can be easily generalized to produce $N$-order spatial correlation states and to probe the aspects of different multi-partite spatial correlations.

Scalable one-way quantum computer using on-chip resonator qubits

We propose a scalable and robust architecture for one-way quantum computation using coupled networks of superconducting transmission line resonators. In our protocol, quantum information is encoded into the long-lived photon states of the resonators, which have a much longer coherence time than the usual superconducting qubits. Each resonator contains a charge qubit used for the state initialization and local projective measurement of the photonic qubit. Any pair of neighboring photonic qubits are coupled via a mediator charge qubit, and large photonic cluster states can be created by applying Stark-shifted Rabi pulses to these mediator qubits. The distinct advantage of our architecture is that it combines both the excellent scalability of the solid-state systems and the long coherence time of the photonic qubits. Furthermore, this architecture is very robust against the parameter variations.

Large detuning limit for the multipartite systems interacting with electromagnetic fields

We study the dynamics of the multipartite systems nonresonantly interacting with electromagnetic fields and show that, since the coupling strength $g$ is collectively enhanced by the square root of the number of microparticles involved, the more rigorous large detuning condition for neglecting the rapidly oscillating terms for the effective Hamiltonian should be $Δ\gg\sqrt{N}g$, instead of $Δ\gg g$ usually used in the literature even in the case of multipartite systems, with $Δ$ the detuning and and $N$ the number of microparticles. This result is significant since merely the satisfaction of the original condition will result in the invalidity of the effective Hamiltonian and the errors of the parameters associated with the detuning in the multipartite case.

Quantum superposition of localized and delocalized phases of photons

Based on a variant of 2-site Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model, which is constructed using superconducting circuits, we propose a method to coherently superpose the localized and delocalized phases of photons. In our model, two nonlinear superconducting stripline resonators are coupled by an interfacial circuit composed of parallel combination of a superconducting qubit and a capacitor, which plays the role of a quantum knob for the photon hopping rate: with the knob qubit in its ground/excited state, the injected photons tend to be localized/delocalized in the resonators. We show that, by applying a microwave field with appropriate frequency on the knob qubit, we could demonstrate Rabi oscillation between photonic localized phase and delocalized phase. Furthermore, this set-up offers advantages (e. g. infinite on/off ratio) over other proposals for the realization of scalable quantum computation with superconducting qubits.

Quantum phase transition of light in a 1-D photon-hopping-controllable resonator array

We give a concrete experimental scheme for engineering the insulator-superfluid transition of light in a one-dimensional (1-D) array of coupled superconducting stripline resonators. In our proposed architecture, the on-site interaction and the photon hopping rate can be tuned independently by adjusting the transition frequencies of the charge qubits inside the resonators and at the resonator junctions, respectively, which permits us to systematically study the quantum phase transition of light in a complete parameter space. By combining the techniques of photon-number-dependent qubit transition and fast read-out of the qubit state using a separate low-Q resonator mode, the statistical property of the excitations in each resonator can be obtained with a high efficiency. An analysis of the various decoherence sources and disorders shows that our scheme can serve as a guide to coming experiments involving a small number of coupled resonators.

Adiabatic Conditions and the Uncertainty Relation

The condition for adiabatic approximation are of basic importance for the applications of the adiabatic theorem. The traditional quantitative condition was found to be necessary but not sufficient, but we do not know its physical meaning and the reason why it is necessary from the physical point of view. In this work, we relate the adiabatic theorem to the uncertainty relation, and present a clear physical picture of the traditional quantitative condition. It is shown that the quantitative condition is just the amplitude of the probability of transition between two levels in the time interval which is of the order of the time uncertainty of the system. We also present a new sufficient condition with clear physical picture.

Experimental verification of statistical correlation for bosons: Another kind of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

According to the identity principle in quantum theory, states of a system consisted of identical particles should maintain unchanged under interchanging between two of the particles. The whole wavefunction should be symmetrized or antisymmetrized. This leads to statistical correlations between particles, which exhibit observable effects. We design an experiment to directly observe such effects for bosons. The experiment is performed with two photons. The effect of statistical correlations is clearly observed when the wavepackets of two photons are completely overlapped, and this effect varies with the degree of overlapping. The results of our experiment substantiate the statistical correlation in a simple way. Experiment reported here can also be regarded as another kind of two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, occurs in the polarization degree of freedom of photon.

Deterministic remote preparation of arbitrary photon polarization states

We propose a deterministic remote state preparation scheme for photon polarization qubit states, where entanglement, local operations and classical communication are used. By consuming one maximally entangled state and two classical bits, an arbitrary (either pure or mixed) qubit state can be prepared deterministically at a remote location. We experimentally demonstrate the scheme by remotely preparing 12 pure states and 6 mixed states. The fidelities between the desired and achieved states are all higher than 0.99 and have an average of 0.9947.

Local Distinguishability of Orthogonal Quantum States and Generators of SU(N)

We investigate the possibility of distinguishing a set of mutually orthogonal multipartite quantum states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We connect this problem with generators of SU(N) and present a new condition that is necessary for a set of orthogonal states to be locally distinguishable. We show that even in multipartite cases there exists a systematic way to check whether the presented condition is satisfied for a given set of orthogonal states. Based on the proposed checking method, we find that LOCC cannot distinguish three mutually orthogonal states in which two of them are GHZ-like states.
