New Delay Doppler Communication Paradigm in 6G era: A Survey of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS)

In the 6G era, space-air-Ground integrated networks (SAGIN) are anticipated to deliver global coverage, necessitating support for a diverse array of emerging applications in high-mobility, hostile environments. Under such conditions, conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, widely employed in cellular and Wi-Fi communication systems, experiences performance degradation due to significant Doppler shifts. To overcome this obstacle, a novel two-dimensional (2D) modulation approach, namely orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), has emerged as a key enabler for future high-mobility use cases. Distinctively, OTFS modulates information within the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, as opposed to the time-frequency (TF) domain utilized by OFDM. This offers advantages such as Doppler and delay resilience, reduced signaling latency, a lower peak-to-average ratio (PAPR), and a reduced-complexity implementation. Recent studies further indicate that the direct interplay between information and the physical world in the DD domain positions OTFS as a promising waveform for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). In this article, we present an in-depth review of OTFS technology in the context of the 6G era, encompassing fundamentals, recent advancements, and future directions. Our objective is to provide a valuable resource for researchers engaged in the field of OTFS.

Radar Sensing via OTFS Signaling: A Delay Doppler Signal Processing Perspective

The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation multiplexes data symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. Since the range and velocity, which can be derived from the delay and Doppler shifts, are the parameters of interest for radar sensing, it is natural to consider implementing DD signal processing for radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate the potential connections between the OTFS and DD domain radar signal processing. Our analysis shows that the range-Doppler matrix computing process in radar sensing is exactly the demodulation of OTFS with a rectangular pulse shaping filter. Furthermore, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) correlation-based algorithm to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler parameters for radar sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently obtain the delay and Doppler shifts associated with multiple targets.

The aim of this letter is to develop a new design of cognitive radio inspired non-orthogonal multiple access (CR-NOMA), which ensures that multiple new users can be supported without causing disruption to the legacy network. Analytical results are developed to characterize the statistical properties of the number of supported new users. The developed CRNOMA scheme is compatible to various communication networks, because it can be implemented as a simple add-on. An example of using CR-NOMA as an add-on in time-division multiple access networks for age of information (AoI) reduction is illustrated, where analytical results are developed to demonstrate

Pricing for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Wireless Networks: Models and Principles

Owing to the recent advancements of meta-materials and meta-surfaces, the concept of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been embraced to meet the spectral- and energy-efficient, and yet cost-effective solutions for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. From an operational standpoint, RISs can be easily deployed on the facades of buildings and indoor walls. Albeit promising, in the actual network operation, the deployment of RISs may face challenges because of the willingness and benefits of RIS holders from the aspect of installing RISs on their properties. Accordingly, RIS-aided wireless networks are faced with a formidable mission: how to balance the wireless service providers (WSPs) and RIS holders in terms of their respective interests. To alleviate this deadlock, we focus on the application of pricing models in RIS-aided wireless networks in pursuit of a win-win solution for both sides. Specifically, we commence with a comprehensive introduction of RIS pricing with its potential applications in RIS networks, meanwhile the fundamentals of pricing models are summarized in order to benefit both RIS holders and WSPs. In addition, a Stackelberg game-based model is exemplified to illustrate the operation of utility-maximization pricing. Finally, we highlight open issues and future research directions of applying pricing models to the RIS-aided wireless networks.

New Spectrally Constrained Sequence Sets with Optimal {Periodic} Cross-Correlation

Spectrally constrained sequences (SCSs) play an important role in modern communication and radar systems operating over non-contiguous spectrum. Despite numerous research attempts over the past years, very few works are known on the constructions of optimal SCSs with low cross-correlations. In this paper, we address such a major problem by introducing a unifying framework to construct unimodular SCS families using circular Florentine rectangles (CFRs) and interleaving techniques. By leveraging the uniform power allocation in the frequency domain for all the admissible carriers (a necessary condition for beating the existing periodic correlation lower bound of SCSs), we present a tighter correlation lower bound and show that it is achievable by our proposed SCS families including multiple SCS sets with zero correlation zone properties.

Improved Sparse Vector Code Based on Optimized Spreading Matrix for Short-Packet URLLC in mMTC

Recently, the sparse vector code (SVC) is emerging as a promising solution for short-packet transmission in massive machine type communication (mMTC) as well as ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC). In the SVC process, the encoding and decoding stages are jointly modeled as a standard compressed sensing (CS) problem. Hence, this paper aims at improving the decoding performance of SVC by optimizing the spreading matrix (i.e. measurement matrix in CS). To this end, two greedy algorithms to minimize the mutual coherence value of the spreading matrix in SVC are proposed. Specially, for practical applications, the spreading matrices are further required to be bipolar whose entries are constrained as +1 or -1. As a result, the optimized spreading matrices are highly efficient for storage, computation, and hardware realization. Simulation results reveal that, compared with the existing work, the block error rate (BLER) performance of SVC can be improved significantly with the optimized spreading matrices.

Joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection for Hybrid RIS aided Millimeter Wave OTFS Systems

For high mobility communication scenario, the recently emerged orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation introduces a new delay-Doppler domain signal space, and can provide better communication performance than traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system. This article focuses on the joint channel estimation and data detection (JCEDD) for hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (HRIS) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) OTFS systems. Firstly, a new transmission structure is designed. Within the pilot durations of the designed structure, partial HRIS elements are alternatively activated. The time domain channel model is then exhibited. Secondly, the received signal model for both the HRIS over time domain and the base station over delay-Doppler domain are studied. Thirdly, by utilizing channel parameters acquired at the HRIS, an HRIS beamforming design strategy is proposed. For the OTFS transmission, we propose a JCEDD scheme over delay-Doppler domain. In this scheme, message passing (MP) algorithm is designed to simultaneously obtain the equivalent channel gain and the data symbols. On the other hand, the channel parameters, i.e., the Doppler shift, the channel sparsity, and the channel variance, are updated through expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. By iteratively executing the MP and EM algorithm, both the channel and the unknown data symbols can be accurately acquired. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of our proposed JCEDD scheme.

Off-Network Communications For Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems: Challenges and Opportunities

GSM-R is predicted to be obsoleted by 2030, and a suitable successor is needed. Defined by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) contains many future use cases with strict requirements. These use cases should ensure regular communication not only in network coverage but also uncovered scenarios. There is still a lack of standards on off-network communication in FRMCS, so this article focuses on off-network communication and intends to provide reference and direction for standardization. We first provide a comprehensive summary and analysis of off-network use cases in FRMCS. Then we give an overview of existing technologies (GSM-R, TETRA, DMR, LTE-V2X, and NR-V2X) that may support off-network communication. In addition, we simulate and evaluate the performance of existing technologies. Simulation results show that it is possible to satisfy the off-network communication requirements in FRMCS with enhancements based on LTE-V2X or NR-V2X. Finally, we give some future research directions to provide insights for industry and academia.

Data-aided Active User Detection with False Alarm Correction in Grant-Free Transmission

In most existing grant-free (GF) studies, the two key tasks, namely active user detection (AUD) and payload data decoding, are handled separately. In this paper, a two-step dataaided AUD scheme is proposed, namely the initial AUD step and the false alarm correction step respectively. To implement the initial AUD step, an embedded low-density-signature (LDS) based preamble pool is constructed. In addition, two message passing algorithm (MPA) based initial estimators are developed. In the false alarm correction step, a redundant factor graph is constructed based on the initial active user set, on which MPA is employed for data decoding. The remaining false detected inactive users will be further recognized by the false alarm corrector with the aid of decoded data symbols. Simulation results reveal that both the data decoding performance and the AUD performance are significantly enhanced by more than 1:5 dB at the target accuracy of 10^3 compared with the traditional compressed sensing (CS) based counterparts

Grant-Free Transmission by LDPC Matrix Mapping and Integrated Cover-MPA Detector

In this paper, a novel transceiver architecture is proposed to simultaneously achieve efficient random access and reliable data transmission in massive IoT networks. At the transmitter side, each user is assigned a unique protocol sequence which is used to identify the user and also indicate the user's channel access pattern. Hence, user identification is completed by the detection of channel access patterns. Particularly, the columns of a parity check matrix of low-density-parity-check (LDPC) code are employed as protocol sequences. The design guideline of this LDPC parity check matrix and the associated performance analysis are provided in this paper. At the receiver side, a two-stage iterative detection architecture is designed, which consists of a group testing component and a payload data decoding component. They collaborate in a way that the group testing component maps detected protocol sequences to a tanner graph, on which the second component could execute its message passing algorithm. In turn, zero symbols detected by the message passing algorithm of the second component indicate potential false alarms made by the first group testing component. Hence, the tanner graph could iteratively evolve. The provided simulation results demonstrate that our transceiver design realizes a practical one-step grant-free transmission and has a compelling performance.

Symmetrical Z-Complementary Code Sets (SZCCSs) for Optimal Training in Generalized Spatial Modulation

This paper introduces a novel class of code sets, called "symmetrical Z-complementary code sets (SZCCSs)" , whose aperiodic auto- and cross- correlation sums exhibit zero-correlation zones (ZCZs) at both the front-end and tail-end of the entire correlation window. Three constructions of (optimal) SZCCSs based on general Boolean functions are presented. As a second major contribution, we apply SZCCSs to design optimal training sequences for broadband generalized spatial modulation (GSM) systems over frequency-selective channels. Key words: Complementary code set, channel estimation, training sequence design, generalized spatial modulation, frequency-selective channels.

Min-Max Latency Optimization Based on Sensed Position State Information in Internet of Vehicles

The dual-function radar communication (DFRC) is an essential technology in Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Consider that the road-side unit (RSU) employs the DFRC signals to sense the vehicles' position state information (PSI), and communicates with the vehicles based on PSI. The objective of this paper is to minimize the maximum communication delay among all vehicles by considering the estimation accuracy constraint of the vehicles' PSI and the transmit power constraint of RSU. By leveraging convex optimization theory, two iterative power allocation algorithms are proposed with different complexities and applicable scenarios. Simulation results indicate that the proposed power allocation algorithm converges and can significantly reduce the maximum transmit delay among vehicles compared with other schemes.

Low Ambiguity Zone: Theoretical Bounds and Doppler-Resilient Sequence Design in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In radar sensing and communications, designing Doppler resilient sequences (DRSs) with low ambiguity function for delay over the entire signal duration and Doppler shift over the entire signal bandwidth is an extremely difficult task. However, in practice, the Doppler frequency range is normally much smaller than the bandwidth of the transmitted signal, and it is relatively easy to attain quasi-synchronization for delays far less than the entire signal duration. Motivated by this observation, we propose a new concept called low ambiguity zone (LAZ) which is a small area of the corresponding ambiguity function of interest defined by the certain Doppler frequency and delay. Such an LAZ will reduce to a zero ambiguity zone (ZAZ) if the maximum ambiguity values of interest are zero. In this paper, we derive a set of theoretical bounds on periodic LAZ/ZAZ of unimodular DRSs with and without spectral constraints, which include the existing bounds on periodic global ambiguity function as special cases. These bounds may be used as theoretical design guidelines to measure the optimality of sequences against Doppler effect. We then introduce four optimal constructions of DRSs with respect to the derived ambiguity lower bounds based on some algebraic tools such as characters over finite field and cyclic difference sets.

Asymptotically Optimal Golay-ZCZ Sequence Sets with Flexible Length

Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences and Golay complementary sequences are two kinds of sequences with different preferable correlation properties. Golay-ZCZ sequences are special kinds of complementary sequences which also possess a large ZCZ and are good candidates for pilots in OFDM systems. Known Golay-ZCZ sequences reported in the literature have a limitation in the length which is the form of a power of 2. In this paper, we propose two constructions of Golay-ZCZ sequence sets with new parameters which generalize the constructions of Gong et al. (IEEE Transaction on Communications 61(9), 2013) and Chen et al (IEEE Transaction on Communications 61(9), 2018). Notably, one of the constructions results in optimal binary Golay-ZCZ sequences, while the other results in asymptotically optimal polyphase Golay-ZCZ sequences as the number of sequences increases.

New Constructions of Golay Complementary Pair/Array with Large Zero Correlation Zone

Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences and Golay sequences are two kinds of sequences with different preferable correlation properties. It was shown by Gong \textit{et al.} and Chen \textit{et al.} that some Golay sequences also possess a large ZCZ and are good candidates for pilots in OFDM systems. Known Golay sequences with ZCZ reported in the literature have a limitation in the length which is the form of a power of 2. One objective of this paper is to propose a construction of Golay complementary pairs (GCPs) with new lengths whose periodic autocorrelation of each of the Golay sequences and periodic corss-correlation of the pair displays a zero correlation zone (ZCZ) around the in-phase position. Specifically, the proposed GCPs have length $4N$ (where, $N$ is the length of a GCP) and ZCZ width $N+1$. Another objective of this paper is to extend the construction to two-dimensional Golay complementary array pairs (GCAPs). Interestingly the periodic corss-correlation of the proposed GACPs also have large ZCZs around the in-phase position.

A Generalised Construction of Multiple Complete Complementary Codes and Asymptotically Optimal Aperiodic Quasi-Complementary Sequence Sets

In recent years, complementary sequence sets have found many important applications in multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems for their good correlation properties. In this paper, we propose a construction, which can generate multiple sets of complete complementary codes (CCCs) over $\mathbb{Z}_N$, where $N~(N\geq 3)$ is a positive integer of the form $N=p_0^{e^0}p_1^{e^1}\dots p_{n-1}^{e^{n-1}}$, $p_0<p_1<\cdots<p_{n-1}$ are prime factors of $N$ and $e_0,e_1,\cdots,e_{n-1}$ are non-negative integers. Interestingly, the maximum inter-set aperiodic cross-correlation magnitude of the proposed CCCs is upper bounded by $N$. When $N$ is odd, the combination of the proposed CCCs results to a new set of sequences to obtain asymptotically optimal and near-optimal aperiodic quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) with more flexible parameters.

New Constructions of Cross Z-Complementary Pairs

Spatial modulation (SM) is a new paradigm of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which only one antenna at the transmitter is activated during each symbol period. Recently, it is observed that SM training sequences derived from corss Z-complementary pairs (CZCPs) lead to optimal channel estimation performance over frequency-selective channels. CZCPs are special form of sequence pairs which have zero aperiodic autocorrelation zones and cross-correlation zone at certain time-shifts. Recent paper by Liu \textit{et al.} discussed only perfect CZCPs. In this paper, we focus on non-perfect CZCPs. We introduce the term cross Z-complementary ratio and re-categorise the CZCPs, both perfect and non-perfect, based on that. We propose a systematic construction of CZCPs based on generalised Boolean functions (GBFs). We further extend the lengths of the CZCPs by using the insertion method. The proposed CZCPs are all of new lengths of the form $2^\alpha10^\beta26^γ+2~(α\geq1)$, $10^β+2$, $26^γ+2$ and $10^β26^γ+2$. Finally we propose a construction of optimal binary CZCPs having parameters $(12,5)$ and $(24,11)$ from binary Barker sequences. These CZCPs are also extended to $(12N,5N)$- CZCPs and $(24N,11N)$- CZCPs, where $N$ is the length of a binary Golay complementary pair (GCP). During the proof, we also found a new structural property of binary CZCPs and concluded all binary GCPs are CZCPs too. Finally, we give some numerical simulations to confirm that depending on the number of multi-paths, the proposed CZCPs can be used to design SM training matrix which attains the minimum mean square error.

On the Reliability and Concurrent Unicast Transmission Node Control of 5G NR-V2X Networks

In vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, reliability is one of the most important performance metrics in safety-critical applications such as advanced driving, remote driving, and vehicle platooning. In this paper, the link reliability of unicast concurrent transmission in mode 1 (centralized mode) of 5G New Radio based V2X (NR-V2X) is analyzed. The closed-form expression of link reliability for concurrent unicast transmission is firstly derived for a highway scenario under a given interference distance distribution. On this basis, according to the macroscopic configuration of the system, a method to control the number of concurrent transmission nodes is proposed, including the communication range, message packet size, and the number of lanes, etc. The results indicate that the proposed method can maximize the system load on the premise of satisfying the link reliability requirements.
