Anisotropy-induced Inhomogeneous Melting in Finite Dust Clusters

We present the first experimental evidence of inhomogeneous melting in a finite dusty plasma crystal confined in an anisotropic potential well. By systematically tuning the confinement anisotropy and applying controlled laser heating, distinct melting patterns are observed. Spectral-mode analysis based on Singular Value Decomposition of particle trajectories reveals that increasing laser power redistributes energy into specific collective modes, triggering localized structural destabilization. Molecular Dynamics simulations reproduce the observations and show that confinement-controlled mode coupling with laser heating governs the melting dynamics. These results establish geometric anisotropy as a key control parameter for inhomogeneous melting in finite coupled systems.

Improved Fluid Modeling of Space Debris Generated Ion-Acoustic Precursor Solitons

This study reexamines the excitation of ion-acoustic precursor solitons by a supersonically moving charged debris object, incorporating two previously overlooked physical factors: the dynamic charging of the debris and the impermeable nature of its surface. The influence of charging dynamics is explored using an enhanced one-dimensional fluid-Poisson model, where the source charge is treated as a dynamical variable and solved self-consistently alongside the core plasma equations. By comparing these results with prior fixed-charge models, we evaluate the effects on soliton onset and propagation, finding that charging dynamics does not hinder soliton generation or evolution. To assess the impact of the impermeability of debris surface, a two-dimensional fluid model simulates the interaction between an electrostatically biased, impenetrable object and a flowing plasma. Modeling the object as an infinite wall disconnects the upstream and downstream plasma regions, forming a sheath without solitons -- consistent with earlier fluid and particle-in-cell simulations. However, replacing the wall with a finite object enables plasma flow around it, restoring upstream-downstream connectivity and naturally generating precursor solitons.

Modeling of Experimentally Observed Two-Dimensional Precursor Solitons in a Dusty Plasma by the forced Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation

We compare model solutions of a forced Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (fKP) equation with experimental observations of dust acoustic precursor solitons excited by a supersonically moving charged cylindrical object in a dusty plasma medium. The fKP equation is derived from a three-fluid-Poisson model of the dusty plasma using the reductive perturbation technique and numerically solved for parameters close to the experimental investigations of cylindrical precursor solitons. The fKP model solutions show excellent agreement with the experimental results in reproducing the prominent geometric features of the two-dimensional solitons and closely matching the quantitative values of their velocities, amplitudes, and temporal evolutions. Our findings suggest that the fKP equation can serve as a very realistic model to investigate the dynamics of precursor solitons and can be usefully employed in practical applications such as space debris detection and tracking techniques that are based on observing/predicting nonlinear plasma excitations induced by the debris in the ionosphere.

Square lattice formation in a monodisperse complex plasma

We present the first observations of a square lattice formation in a monodisperse complex plasma system - a configurational transition phenomenon that has long been an experimental challenge in the field. The experiments are conducted in a tabletop L-shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx-II) device in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma environment. By a careful control of the vertical potential confining the charged particles as well as the strength of the ion wake charge interactions with the dust particles we are able to steer the system towards a crystalline phase that exhibits a square lattice configuration. The transition occurs when the vertical confinement strength is slightly reduced below a critical value leading to a buckling of the monodisperse hexagonal 2D dust crystal to form a narrowly separated bilayer state (a quasi-2D state). Some theoretical insights into the transition process are provided through Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations carried out for the parameters relevant to our experiment.

DPEx-II: A New Dusty Plasma Device Capable of Producing Large Sized DC Coulomb Crystals

The creation of a spatially extended stable DC complex plasma crystal is a big experimental challenge and a topical area of research in the field of dusty plasmas. In this paper we describe a newly built and commissioned dusty plasma experimental device, DPEx-II, at the Institute for Plasma Research. The device can support the formation of large sized Coulomb crystals in a DC glow discharge plasma. The plasma in this L-shaped table-top glass chamber is produced between a circular anode and a long tray shaped cathode. It is characterized with the help of various electrostatic probes over a range of discharge conditions. The dust particles are introduced by a dust dispenser to form a strongly coupled Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region. The unique asymmetric electrode configuration minimizes the heating of dust particles and facilitates the formation of crystalline structures with a maximum achievable dimension of 40~cm X 15~cm using this device. A larger crystal has numerous advantages over smaller ones, such as higher structural homogeneity, fewer defects, lower statistical errors due to finite size effects etc.. A host of diagnostics tools are provided to characterize the Coulomb crystal. Results of a few initial experiments aimed at demonstrating the technical capabilities of the device and its potential for future dusty plasma research, are reported.
