High-pressure stabilization of Mg2IrH7: Structural proximity to high-Tc superconductivity

Mg$_2$IrH$_6$ is a metastable complex metal hydride with a predicted superconducting transition temperature as high as 170 K at ambient pressure. Following the synthesis of isomorphic, insulating Mg$_2$IrH$_5$ at low pressure, higher-pressure studies were conducted to investigate the phase behavior and compound formation in this system. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic measurements indicate that cubic Mg$_2$IrH$_7$ is stabilized above ca. 40 GPa and coexists with a related hexagonal hydride with likely composition near Mg$_2$IrH$_5$. Electrical transport measurements show that the cubic Mg$_2$IrH$_7$ is insulating, in agreement with ab initio predictions, and persists during room-temperature decompression until $\sim$20 GPa before reverting back to the cubic Mg$_2$IrH$_5$. The experimental results confirm ground-state structure predictions in the Mg-Ir-H system, and the formation of two nearly identical phases with surrounding compositions opens new opportunities to access superconducting Mg$_2$IrH$_6$ through non-equilibrium processing pathways.

A Piezoelectric Molecular Cocrystal with Unconventional $π$-Stacking

We demonstrate the crystallization of a polar octafluoronaphthalene (OFN, \OFN)--phthalazine (Phth, \Phth) cocrystal, formed in a 1:2 ratio by slow evaporation. The crystal structure and vibrational properties of the cocrystal were determined using powder/single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and confirmed with density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations. The molecular $π$-stacking of aromatic rings is unconventional compared with other arene--perfluoroarene cocrystals. Phth molecules are offset and misaligned with respect to the major axis of OFN due to electrostatic repulsion between N and F atoms, enabling overall electric polarization attributed to the dipole moment of Phth. Our calculations show that OFN:2Phth is an insulator with a band gap of $\sim$2.4 eV. The electric polarization was calculated to be 7.1 \muC, while the shear piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{34}$) may be as large as 11.4 pC N$^{-1}$.

Superconductivity in SrB3C3 clathrate

We predict superconductivity for the carbon-boron clathrate SrB3C3 at 27-43 K for Coulomb pseudopotential (mu*) values between 0.17 and 0.10 using first-principles calculations with conventional electron-phonon coupling. Electrical transport measurements, facilitated by a novel in situ experimental design compatible with extreme synthesis conditions (>3000 K at 50 GPa), show non-hysteretic resistivity drops that track the calculated magnitude and pressure dependence of superconductivity for mu*=0.15, and transport measurements collected under applied magnetic fields confirm superconductivity with an onset Tc of approximately 20 K at 40 GPa. Carbon-based clathrates thus represent a new class of superconductors similar to other covalent metals like MgB2 and doped fullerenes. Carbon clathrates share structures similar to superconducting superhydrides, but covalent C-B bonds allow metastable persistence at ambient conditions.
