New maximal regularity results for the heat equation in exterior domains, and applications

This paper is dedicated to the proof of new maximal regularity results involving Besov spaces for the heat equation in the half-space or in bounded or exterior domains of R^n. We strive for time independent a priori estimates in regularity spaces of type L^1(0,T;X) where X stands for some homogeneous Besov space. In the case of bounded domains, the results that we get are similar to those of the whole space or of the half-space. For exterior domains, we need to use mixed Besov norms in order to get a control on the low frequencies. Those estimates are crucial for proving global-in-time results for nonlinear heat equations in a critical functional framework.

Incompressible flows with piecewise constant density

We investigate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable density. The aim is to prove existence and uniqueness results in the case of discontinuous ini- tial density. In dimension n = 2, 3, assuming only that the initial density is bounded and bounded away from zero, and that the initial velocity is smooth enough, we get the local-in-time existence of unique solutions. Uniqueness holds in any dimension and for a wider class of velocity fields. Let us emphasize that all those results are true for piecewise constant densities with arbitrarily large jumps. Global results are established in dimension two if the density is close enough to a positive constant, and in n-dimension if, in addition, the initial velocity is small. The Lagrangian formula- tion for describing the flow plays a key role in the analysis that is proposed in the present paper.

On the existence of traveling waves in the 3D Boussinesq system

We extend earlier work on traveling waves in premixed flames in a gravitationally stratified medium, subject to the Boussinesq approximation. For three-dimensional channels not aligned with the gravity direction and under the Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fluid velocity, it is shown that a non-planar traveling wave, corresponding to a non-zero reaction, exists, under an explicit condition relating the geometry of the crossection of the channel to the magnitude of the Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers, or when the advection term in the flow equations is neglected.

A caricature of a singular curvature flow in the plane

We study a singular parabolic equation of the total variation type in one dimension. The problem is a simplification of the singular curvature flow. We show existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. We also prove existence of weak solutions to the semi-discretization of the problem as well as convergence of the approximating sequences. The semi-discretization shows that facets must form. For a class of initial data we are able to study in details the facet formation and interactions and their asymptotic behavior. We notice that our qualitative results may be interpreted with the help of a special composition of multivalued operators.

On the steady compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We study the motion of the steady compressible heat conducting viscous fluid in a bounded three dimensional domain governed by the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. Our main result is the existence of a weak solution to these equations for arbitrarily large data. A key element of the proof is a special approximation of the original system guaranteeing pointwise uniform boundedness of the density. Therefore the passage to the limit omits tedious technical tricks required by the standard theory. Basic estimates on the solutions are possible to obtain by a suitable choice of physically reasonable boundary conditions.

Zygmund spaces, inviscid limits and uniqueness of Euler flows

The paper improves the classical uniqueness result for the Euler system in the $n$ dimensional case assuming that $\nabla u^E \in L_1(0,T;BMO(Ω))$, only. Moreover the rate of the convergence for the inviscid limit of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is obtained, provided the same regularity of the limit Eulerian flow. A key element of the proof is a logarithmic inequality between the Hardy and $L_1$ spaces which is a consequence of the basic properties of the Zygmund space $\LlnL$.

Stability of 2D incompressible flows in ${\bf R}^3$

We investigate the global in time stability of regular solutions with large velocity vectors to the evolutionary Navier-Stokes equation in ${\bf R}^3$. The class of stable flows contains all two dimensional weak solutions. The only assumption which is required is smallness of the $L_2$-norm of initial perturbation or its derivative with respect to the `$z$'-coordinate in the same norm. The magnitude of the rest of the norm of initial datum is not restricted.
