Burgers' equation revisited: extension of mono-dimensional case on a network

The paper deals with the analysis of Burgers' equation on acyclic metric graphs. The main goal is to establish the existence of weak solutions in the $TV$ -- class of regularity. A key point is transmission conditions in vertices obeying the Kirchhoff law. First, we consider positive solutions at arbitrary acyclic networks and highlight two kinds of vertices, describing two mechanisms of flow splitting at the vertex. Next we design rules at vertices for solutions of arbitrary sign for any subgraph of hexagonal grid, which leads to a construction of general solutions with $TV$ -- regularity for this class of networks. Introduced transmission conditions are motivated by the change of the energy estimation.

A construction of two different solutions to an elliptic system

The paper aims at constructing two different solutions to an elliptic system $$ u \cdot \nabla u + (-Δ)^m u = λF $$ defined on the two dimensional torus. It can be viewed as an elliptic regularization of the stationary Burgers 2D system. A motivation to consider the above system comes from an examination of unusual propetries of the linear operator $λ\sin y \partial_x w + (-Δ)^{m} w$ arising from a linearization of the equation about the dominant part of $F$. We argue that the skew-symmetric part of the operator provides in some sense a smallness of norms of the linear operator inverse. Our analytical proof is valid for a particular force $F$ and for $λ> λ_0$, $m> m_0$ sufficiently large. The main steps of the proof concern finite dimension approximation of the system and concentrate on analysis of features of large matrices, which resembles standard numerical analysis. Our analytical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

Well-posedness of sudden directional diffusion equations

Our goal is to establish existence with suitable initial data of solutions to general parabolic equation in one dimension, $u_t = L(u_x)_x$, where $L$ is merely a monotone function. We also expose the basic properties of solutions, concentrating on maximal possible regularity. Analysis of solutions with convex initial data explains why we may call them {\it almost classical}. Some qualitative aspects of solutions, like facets -- flat regions of solutions, are studied too.

A Lagrangian approach for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable density

Here we investigate the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations in the whole $n$-dimensional space. Under some smallness assumption on the data, we show the existence of global-in-time unique solutions in a critical functional framework. The initial density is required to belong to the multiplier space of $\dot B^{n/p-1}_{p,1}(\R^n)$. In particular, piecewise constant initial densities are admissible data \emph{provided the jump at the interface is small enough}, and generate global unique solutions with piecewise constant densities. Using Lagrangian coordinates is the key to our results as it enables us to solve the system by means of the basic contraction mapping theorem. As a consequence, conditions for uniqueness are the same as for existence.

Almost classical solutions to the total variation flow

The paper examines one-dimensional total variation flow equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Thanks to a new concept of "almost classical" solutions we are able to determine evolution of facets -- flat regions of solutions. A key element of our approach is the natural regularity determined by nonlinear elliptic operator, for which $x^2$ is an irregular function. Such a point of view allows us to construct solutions. We apply this idea to implement our approach to numerical simulations for typical initial data. Due to the nature of Dirichlet data any monotone function is an equilibrium. We prove that each solution reaches such steady state in a finite time.

Directional approach to spatial structure of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the plane

We investigate a steady flow of incompressible fluid in the plane. The motion is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with prescribed velocity $u_\infty$ at infinity. The main result shows the existence of unique solutions for arbitrary force, provided sufficient largeness of $u_\infty$. Furthermore a spacial structure of the solution is obtained in comparison with the Oseen flow. A key element of our new approach is based on a setting which treats the directino of the flow as \emph{time} direction. The analysis is done in framework of the Fourier transform taken in one (perpendicular) direction and a special choice of function spaces which take into account the inhomogeneous character of the symbol of the Oseen system. From that point of view our technique can be used as an effective tool in examining spatial asymptotics of solutions to other systems modeled by elliptic equations.
