Effects of imperfect noise correlations on decoherence-free subsystems: SU(2) diffusion model

We present a model of an N-qubit channel where consecutive qubits experience correlated random rotations. Our model is an extension to the standard decoherence-free subsystems approach (DFS) which assumes that all the qubits experience the same disturbance. The variation of rotations acting on consecutive qubits is modeled as diffusion on the SU(2) group. The model may be applied to spins traveling in a varying magnetic field, or to photons passing through a fiber whose birefringence fluctuates over the time separation between photons. We derive an explicit formula describing the action of the channel on an arbitrary N-qubit state. For N=3 we investigate the effects of diffusion on both classical and quantum capacity of the channel. We observe that nonorthogonal states are necessary to achieve the optimal classical capacity. Furthermore we find the threshold for the diffusion parameter above which coherent information of the channel vanishes.

Spectral density matrix of a single photon measured

We propose and demonstrate a method for measuring the spectral density matrix of a single photon pulse. The method is based on registering Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between photon to be measured and a pair of attenuated and suitably delayed laser pulses described by a known spectral amplitude. The density matrix is retrieved from a two-dimensional interferogram of coincidence counts. The method has been implemented for a type-I downconversion source, pumped by ultrashort laser pulses. The experimental results agree well with a theoretical model which takes into account the temporal as well as spatial effects in the source.

Joint spectrum of photon pairs measured by coincidence Fourier spectroscopy

We propose and demonstrate a method for measuring the joint spectrum of photon pairs via Fourier spectroscopy. The biphoton spectral intensity is computed from a two-dimensional interferogram of coincidence counts. The method has been implemented for a type-I downconversion source using a pair of common-path Mach-Zender interferometers based on Soleil compensators. The experimental results agree well with calculated frequency correlations that take into account the effects of coupling into single-mode fibers. The Fourier method is advantageous over scanning spectrometry when detectors exhibit high dark count rates leading to dominant additive noise.
