Quantum-rigid random quantum graphs

A quantum graph $\mathcal{G}$ housed by a matrix algebra $M_n$ can be encoded as an operator system $\mathcal S=\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{G}}\le M_n$. There are two sensible notions of quantum automorphism group for any such: $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal G)$, capturing the quantum symmetries of the adjacency matrix $A:M_n\to M_n$ attached to $\mathcal{G}$, and $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal S\le M_n)$, the quantum group acting universally on $M_n$ so as to preserve its $C^*$ structure, standard trace, and subspace $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$. The two quantum groups coincide classically, but diverge in general. We nevertheless show that both are generically trivial in the sense that they are so for $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$ ranging over a non-empty Zariski-open set under all reasonable dimensional constraints on $\dim \mathcal{S}$ and $n$. This extends analogous prior results by the first and third authors to the effect that classical symmetry groups of still-quantum graphs are generically trivial, and offers a fully quantum counterpart to the familiar probabilistic almost-rigidity of finite graphs. An auxiliary result sheds some light on the relationship between the two notions of quantum automorphism group, identifying the universal preserver of the quantum adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}$ with the quantum automorphism group not of $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$, but rather of the complex conjugate $\overline{\mathcal{S}}\le M_n$.

Quantum Mycielskians: symmetries, twin vertices and distinguishing labelings

We investigate a quantum generalization of the Mycielski construction for quantum graphs. In particular, we analyze the quantum symmetries of quantum Mycielskians and their relation to the symmetries of the underlying quantum graphs. We introduce a quantum analogue of graphs with twin vertices and show that, for classical graphs with a small number of vertices, this notion reduces to the classical one. Finally, we propose a quantum extension of the distinguishing number and examine its behavior under the quantum Mycielski construction.

Examples of compact quantum groups with $\operatorname{\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}}(\mathbb{G})$ a factor

For each $λ\in\left]0,1\right]$ we exhibit an uncountable family of compact quantum groups $\mathbb{G}$ such that the von Neumann algebra $\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}(\mathbb{G})$ is the injective factor of type $\mathrm{III}_λ$ with separable predual. We also show that uncountably many injective factors of type $\mathrm{III}_0$ arise as $\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}(\mathbb{G})$ for some compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$. To distinguish between our examples we introduce invariants related to the scaling group modeled on the Connes invariant $T$ for von Neumann algebras and investigate the connection between so obtained invariants of $\mathbb{G}$ and the Connes invariants $T(\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}(\mathbb{G}))$, $S(\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}(\mathbb{G}))$. In the final section we show that factors of type $\mathrm{I}$ cannot be obtained as $\mathsf{L}^{\!\infty}(\mathbb{G})$ for a non-trivial compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$.

On certain invariants of compact quantum groups

We introduce and study a number of invariants of locally compact quantum groups defined by their scaling and modular groups and the spectrum of their modular elements. Focusing mainly on compact quantum groups we consider the question whether triviality of one of the invariants is equivalent to the quantum group being of Kac type and show that it has a positive answer in many cases including duals of second countable type $\mathrm{I}$ discrete quantum groups. We perform a complete calculation of the invariants for all $q$-deformations of compact, simply connected, semisimple Lie groups as well as for some non-compact quantum groups and the compact quantum groups $\operatorname{U}_F^+$. Finally we introduce a family of conditions for discrete quantum groups which for classical discrete groups are all equivalent to the fact that the group is i.c.c. We show that the above mentioned question about characterization of Kac type quantum groups by one of our invariants has a positive answer for duals of discrete quantum groups satisfying such an i.c.c.-type condition and illustrate this with the example of $\operatorname{U}_F^+$.

Invariants of the quantum graph of the partial trace

We compute the independence number, zero-error capacity, and the values of the Lovász function and the quantum Lovász function for the quantum graph associated to the partial trace quantum channel $\operatorname{Tr}_n\otimes\mathrm{id}_k\colon\operatorname{B}(\mathbb{C}^n\otimes\mathbb{C}^k)\to\operatorname{B}(\mathbb{C}^k)$.

Quantum correlations on quantum spaces

For given quantum (non-commutative) spaces $\mathbb{P}$ and $\mathbb{O}$ we study the quantum space of maps $\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}$ from $\mathbb{P}$ to $\mathbb{O}$. In case of finite quantum spaces these objects turn out to be behind a large class of maps which generalize the classical $\mathrm{qc}$-correlations known from quantum information theory to the setting of quantum input and output sets. We prove a number of important functorial properties of the mapping $(\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O})\mapsto\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}$ and use them to study various operator algebraic properties of the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras $\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$ such as the lifting property and residual finite dimensionality. Inside $\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$ we construct a universal operator system $\mathbb{S}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}$ related to $\mathbb{P}$ and $\mathbb{O}$ and show, among other things, that the embedding $\mathbb{S}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}\subset\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$ is hyperrigid, $\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$ is the $\mathrm{C}^*$-envelope of $\mathbb{S}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}$ and that a large class of non-signalling correlations on the quantum sets $\mathbb{P}$ and $\mathbb{O}$ arise from states on $\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})\otimes_{\rm{max}}\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$ as well as states on the commuting tensor product $\mathbb{S}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}\otimes_{\rm{c}}\mathbb{S}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}}$. Finally we introduce and study the notion of a synchronous correlation with quantum input and output sets, prove several characterizations of such correlations and their relation to traces on $\operatorname{C}(\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{P},\mathbb{O}})$.

Compact quantum group structures on type-I $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras

We prove a number of results having to do with equipping type-I $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras with compact quantum group structures, the two main ones being that such a compact quantum group is necessarily co-amenable, and that if the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra in question is an extension of a non-zero finite direct sum of elementary $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras by a commutative unital $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra then it must be finite-dimensional.

The quantum disk is not a quantum group

We show that the quantum disk, i.e. the quantum space corresponding to the Toeplitz C*-algebra does not admit any compact quantum group structure. We prove that if such a structure existed the resulting compact quantum group would simultaneously be of Kac type and not of Kac type. The main tools used in the solution come from the theory of type I locally compact quantum groups, but also from the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces.

Podleś Spheres for the Braided Quantum $\operatorname{SU}(2)$

Starting with the braided quantum group $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ for a complex deformation parameter $q$ we perform the construction of the quotient $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)/\mathbb{T}$ which serves as a model of a quantum sphere. Then we follow the reasoning of Podleś who for real $q$ classified quantum spaces with the action of $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ with appropriate spectral properties. These properties can also be expressed in the context of the braided quantum $\operatorname{SU}_q(2)$ (with complex $q$) and we find that they lead to precisely the same family of quantum spaces as found by Podleś for the real parameter $|q|$.

Kawada-Itô-Kelley Theorem for Quantum Semigroups

Idempotent states on locally compact quantum semigroups with weak cancellation properties are shown to be Haar states on a certain sub-object described by an operator system with comultiplication. We also give a characterization of the situation when this sub-object is actually a compact quantum subgroup. In particular we reproduce classical results on idempotent probability measures on locally compact semigroups with cancellation.

Quantum Semigroups from Synchronous Games

We show that the C*-algebras associated with synchronous games give rise to certain quantum families of maps between the input and output sets of the game. In particular situations (e.g. for graph endomorphism games) these quantum families have a natural quantum semigroup structure and if the condition of preservation of a natural state is added, they are in fact compact quantum groups.

The Lattice of Idempotent States on a Locally Compact Quantum Group

We study lattice operations on the set of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group corresponding to the operations of intersection of compact subgroups and forming the subgroup generated by two compact subgroups. Normal ($σ$-weakly continuous) idempotent states are investigated and a duality between normal idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and on its dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$ is established. Additionally we analyze the question when a left coideal corresponding canonically to an idempotent state is finite dimensional and give a characterization of normal idempotent states on compact quantum groups.

Compact quantum groups with representations of bounded degree

We show that a compact quantum group all whose irreducible representations have dimension bounded by a fixed constant must be of Kac type, in other words, its Haar measure is a trace. The proof is based on establishing several facts concerning operators related to modular properties of the Haar measure. In particular we study spectrum of these operators and the dimension of some of their eigenspaces in relation to the quantum dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation.

Hopf images in locally compact quantum groups

This manuscript is devoted to the study of the concept of a generating subset (a.k.a. Hopf image of a morphism) in the setting of locally compact quantum groups. The aim of this paper is to provide an accurate description of the Hopf image of a given morphism. We extend and unify the previously existing approaches for compact and discrete quantum groups and present some results that can shed light on some local perspective in the theory of quantum groups. In particular, we provide a characterization of fullness of Hopf image in the language of partial actions as well as in representation-theoretic terms in the spirit of representation $C^*$-categories, extending some known results not only to the broader setting of non-compact quantum groups, but also encompassing a broader setting of generating subsets.

Introduction to compact and discrete quantum groups

These are notes from introductory lectures at the graduate school "Topological Quantum Groups" in Będlewo (June 28--July 11, 2015). The notes present the passage from Hopf algebras to compact quantum groups and sketch the notion of discrete quantum groups viewed as duals of compact quantum groups.

Induction for locally compact quantum groups revisited

In this paper we revisit the theory of induced representations in the setting of locally compact quantum groups. In the case of induction from open quantum subgroups, we show that constructions of Kustermans and Vaes are equivalent to the classical, and much simpler, construction of Rieffel. We also prove in general setting the continuity of induction in the sense of Vaes with respect to weak containment.

Quantum actions on discrete quantum spaces and a generalization of Clifford's theory of representations

To any action of a compact quantum group on a von Neumann algebra which is a direct sum of factors we associate an equivalence relation corresponding to the partition of a space into orbits of the action. We show that in case all factors are finite-dimensional (i.e. when the action is on a discrete quantum space) the relation has finite orbits. We then apply this to generalize the classical theory of Clifford, concerning the restrictions of representations to normal subgroups, to the framework of quantum subgroups of discrete quantum groups, itself extending the context of closed normal quantum subgroups of compact quantum groups. Finally, a link is made between our equivalence relation in question and another equivalence relation defined by R.Vergnioux.
