When surjectivity demands pathology

In this paper, we characterize surjective nonlinear composition operators acting between the space of sequences of bounded variation and the space of bounded sequences. We show that their generators exhibit highly pathological behavior. To complement this, we construct explicit examples, confirming that such exotic objects do in fact exist.

On the independence of axioms for measures of non-compactness

We investigate the independence of the axioms in the Banaś--Goebel approach to the theory of measures of non-compactness. We present a complete answer for four of the five axioms. For the remaining axiom, we provide a full solution in finite-dimensional spaces and a partial one in the infinite-dimensional case.

Non-external Proofs of Lagrange Inversion Formula

The goal of the paper is to present two simple proofs of the Lagrange Inversion Formula for formal power series. Both proofs are non-external in the sense that they use concepts that do not go beyond the scope of basic tools of formal power series analysis.

On Riordan groups involving formal semi-Laurent series and their Lie group structure

The main goal of this paper is to introduce and to investigate properties of generalized Riordan arrays and generalized Riordan groups that involve formal semi-Laurent series. In particular, we focus on the problem of isomorphy of generalized Riordan groups with the classical Riordan groups giving the negative answer to this problem. We also examine infinite dimensional Lie group structure of the group of generalized Riordan arrays.

A note on multiplicative roots of multivariable formal power series

Suppose that we are given a formal power series of many variables with coefficients in $\mathbb{R}$ (or $\mathbb{C}$) and we want to compute its $n$-th (multiplicative) root. As can be expected coefficients of the root have to satisfy a system of infinitely many equations. We present such a system of equations that strictly corresponds with the system for $n$-th of a formal power series of one variable. With help of an example we show that the case of formal power series of many variables is very different from the one variable case with respect to the existence of roots.

A fixed point theorem for mappings in partial metric spaces

In this paper we are going to prove a very general fixed point theorem for mappings acting in partial metric spaces. In that theorem we impose some conditions on behavior of considered mappings on orbits and a condition relating orbits of points of small size.

On the recursive and explicit form of the general J.C.P. Miller formula with applications

The famous J.C.P. Miller formula provides a recurrence algorithm for the composition $B_a \circ f$, where $B_a$ is the formal binomial series and $f$ is a formal power series, however it requires that $f$ has to be a nonunit. In this paper we provide the general J.C.P. Miller formula which eliminates the requirement of nonunitness of $f$ and, instead, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the composition $B_a \circ f$. We also provide the general J.C.P. Miller recurrence algorithm for computing the coefficients of that composition, if $ B_a\circ f$ is well defined, obviously. Our generalizations cover both the case in which $f$ is a one--variable formal power series and the case in which $f$ is a multivariable formal power series. In the central part of this article we state, using some combinatorial techniques, the explicit form of the general J.C.P. Miller formula for one-variable case. As applications of these results we provide an explicit formula for the inverses of polynomials and formal power series for which the inverses exist, obviously. We also use our results to investigation of approximate solution to a differential equation which cannot be solved in an explicit way.

Compactness in normed spaces: a unified approach through semi-norms

In this paper we prove two new abstract compactness criteria in normed spaces. To this end we first introduce the notion of an equinormed set using a suitable family of semi-norms on the given normed space satisfying some natural conditions. Those conditions, roughly speaking, state that the norm can be approximated (on the equinormed sets even uniformly) by the elements of this family. As we are given some freedom of choice of the underlying semi-normed structure that is used to define equinormed sets, our approach opens a new perspective for building compactness criteria in specific normed spaces. As an example we show that natural selections of families of semi-norms in spaces $C(X,\mathbb{R})$ and $l^p$ for $p\in[1,+\infty)$ lead to the well-known compactness criteria (including the Arzelà-Ascoli theorem). In the second part of the paper, applying the abstract theorems, we construct a simple compactness criterion in the space of functions of bounded Schramm variation and provide a full characterization of linear integral operators acting from the space of functions of bounded Jordan variation to the space of functions of bounded Schramm variation in therms of their generating kernels.

Compactness in Lipschitz spaces and around

The aim of the paper is to characterize (pre)compactness in the spaces of Lipschitz/Hölder continuous mappings acting from a compact metric space to a normed space. To this end some extensions and generalizations of already existing compactness criteria for the spaces of bounded and continuous mappings with values in normed spaces needed to be established. Those auxiliary results, which are interesting on their own since they use a concept of equicontinuity not seen in the literature, are based on an abstract compactness criterion related to the recently introduced notion of an equinormed set.

On composition and Right Distributive Law for formal power series of multiple variables

In the first part of the paper we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the composition of formal power series in the case when the outer series is a series of one variable while the inner one is a series of multiple variables. The aim of the second part is to remove ambiguities connected with the Right Distributive Law for formal power series of one variable as well as to provide analogues of that law in the multivariable case.

On compactness and fixed point theorems in partial metric spaces

In this paper we examine two basic topological properties of partial metric spaces, namely compactness and completeness. Our main result claims that in these spaces compactness is equivalent to sequential compactness. We also show that Hausdorff compact partial metric spaces are metrizable. In the second part of this article we discuss the significance of bottom sets of partial metric spaces in fixed point theorems for mappings acting in these spaces.

Software Metrics in Boa Large-Scale Software Mining Infrastructure: Challenges and Solutions

In this paper, we describe our experience implementing some of classic software engineering metrics using Boa - a large-scale software repository mining platform - and its dedicated language. We also aim to take an advantage of the Boa infrastructure to propose new software metrics and to characterize open source projects by software metrics to provide reference values of software metrics based on large number of open source projects. Presented software metrics, well known and proposed in this paper, can be used to build large-scale software defect prediction models. Additionally, we present the obstacles we met while developing metrics, and our analysis can be used to improve Boa in its future releases. The implemented metrics can also be used as a foundation for more complex explorations of open source projects and serve as a guide how to implement software metrics using Boa as the source code of the metrics is freely available to support reproducible research.
