A Pascal-type construction of the Segre cubic and the Cremona--Richmond configuration

We present a Pascal-type residual construction in P^4. Starting from two quadruples of hyperplanes whose four diagonal intersection planes lie in a hyperplane, we show that the twelve residual planes lie on a cubic threefold. In the general case this cubic is the Segre cubic, and the construction recovers its fifteen planes and the associated Cremona--Richmond configuration. We also exhibit a point-line realization of this configuration in P^4 and show that it gives a (5,3)-geprofi set.

Addition theorems for Ziegler pairs of hyperplane arrangements

Inspired by Terao's freeness conjecture, we examine Ziegler pairs, which are pairs of hyperplane arrangements that share the same underlying matroid but have different modules of logarithmic derivations. In this paper, we present a general construction that yields the first known families of Ziegler pairs in arbitrary dimension and size, starting from examples in the complex projective plane.

Free line arrangements with low maximal multiplicity

Let $\A$ be a free arrangement of $d$ lines in the complex projective plane, with exponents $d_1\leq d_2$. Let $m$ be the maximal multiplicity of points in $\A$. In this note, we describe first the simple cases $d_1 \leq m$. Then we study the case $d_1=m+1$, and describe which line arrangements can occur by deleting or adding a line to $\A$. When $d \leq 14$, there are only two free arrangements with $d_1=m+2$, namely one with degree $13$ and the other with degree $14$. We study their geometries in order to deepen our understanding of the structure of free line arrangements in general.

Singular plane curves: freeness and combinatorics

In this paper we focus on various aspects of singular complex plane curves, mostly in the context of their homological properties and the associated combinatorial structures. We formulate some challenging open problems that can point to new directions in research, for example by introducing weak Ziegler pairs of curve arrangements. Moreover, we construct new examples of different Ziegler pairs, in both the classical and the weak sense, and present new geometric approaches to construction problems of singular plane curves.

On homological properties of some Cynk-Szemberg octic hyperplane arrangements

In this paper we study Cynk-Szemberg octic hyperplane arrangements from the perspective of homological properties of their derivation modules. In particular, we define the notion of the type of hyperplane arrangements that will be used in our characterization of rigid Cynk-Szemberg octic hyperplane arrangements. Moreover, we deliver a combinatorial non-freeness criterion for essential hyperplane arrangements in $\mathbb{C}^{4}$.

On the geography of log-surfaces

This survey focuses on the geometric problem of log-surfaces, which are pairs consisting of a smooth projective surface and a reduced non-empty boundary divisor. In the first part, we focus on the geography problem for complex log-surfaces associated with pairs of the form $(\mathbb{P}^{2}, C)$, where $C$ is an arrangement of smooth plane curves admitting ordinary singularities. Specifically, we focus on the case in which $C$ is an arrangement consisting of smooth rational curves as its irreducible components. In the second part, containing original new results, we study log-surfaces constructed as pairs consisting of a complex projective $K3$ surface and a rational curve arrangement. In particular, we provide some combinatorial conditions for such pairs to have the log-Chern slope equal to $3$. Our survey is illustrated with many explicit examples of log-surfaces.

On plus-one generated arrangements of plane conics

In this paper, we examine the combinatorial properties of conic arrangements in the complex projective plane that possess certain quasi-homogeneous singularities. First, we introduce a new tool that enables us to characterize the property of being plus-one generated within the class of conic arrangements with some naturally chosen quasi-homogeneous singularities. Next, we present a classification result on plus-one generated conic arrangements admitting only nodes and tacnodes as singularities. Building on results regarding conic arrangements with nodes and tacnodes, we present new examples of strong Ziegler pairs of conic-line arrangements -- that is, arrangements having the same strong combinatorics but distinct derivation modules.

On the numerical Terao's conjecture and Ziegler pairs for line arrangements

In this paper we present a smallest possible counterexample to the Numerical Terao's Conjecture in the class of line arrangements in the complex projective plane. Our example consists of a pair of two arrangements with $13$ lines. Moreover, we use the newly discovered singular matroid realization spaces to construct new examples of pairs of line arrangements having the same underlying matroid but different free resolutions of the Milnor algebras. Such rare arrangements are called Ziegler pairs in the literature.

A new hierarchy for complex plane curves

We define the type of a plane curve as the initial degree of the corresponding Bourbaki ideal. Then we show that this invariant behaves well with respect to the union of curves. Curves of type $0$ are precisely the free curves, while curves of type $1$ are the plus-one generated curves. In this paper, we first show that line arrangements and conic-line arrangements can exhibit all the theoretically possible types. In the second part, we study the properties of the curves of type $2$ and construct families of line arrangements and conic-line arrangements of this type.

On the Boucksom-Zariski decomposition for irreducible symplectic varieties and bounded negativity

Zariski decomposition plays an important role in the theory of algebraic surfaces due to many applications. For irreducible symplectic manifolds Boucksom provided a characterization of his divisorial Zariski decomposition in terms of the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki quadratic form. Different variants of singular holomorphic symplectic varieties have been extensively studied in recent years. In this note we first show that the ``Boucksom-Zariski'' decomposition holds for effective divisors in the largest possible framework of varieties with symplectic singularities. On the other hand in the case of projective surfaces, it was recently shown that there is a strict relation between the boundedness of coefficients of Zariski decompositions of pseudoeffective integral divisors and the bounded negativity conjecture. In the present note, we show that an analogous phenomenon can be observed in the case of projective irreducible symplectic varieties. We furthermore prove an effective analog of the bounded negativity conjecture in the smooth case. Combining these results we obtain information on the denominators of ``Boucksom-Zariski'' decompositions for holomorphic symplectic manifolds. From such a bound we easily deduce a result of effective birationality for big line bundles on projective holomorphic symplectic manifolds, answering to a question asked by F. Charles.

On Poincaré polynomials for plane curves with quasi-homogeneous singularities

We define a combinatorial object that can be associated with any conic-line arrangement with ordinary singularities, which we call the combinatorial Poincaré polynomial. We prove a Terao-type factorization statement on the splitting of such a polynomial over the rationals under the assumption that our conic-line arrangements are free and admit ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities. Then we focus on the so-called $d$-arrangements in the plane. In particular, we provide a combinatorial constraint for free $d$-arrangements admitting ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities.

On arrangements of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents

In the present paper, we revisit the geometry of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents from several perspectives. First, we study in detail the weak combinatorics of arrangements of bitangents associated with highly symmetric quartic curves. We consider quartic curves from the point of view of the order of their automorphism groups, in order to establish a lower bound on the number of quadruple intersection points for arrangements of bitangents associated with smooth plane quartics, which are smooth members of Ciani's pencil. We then construct new examples of $3$-syzygy reduced plane curves using smooth plane quartics and their bitangents.

Construction of free curves by adding osculating conics to a given cubic curve

In the present article we construct new families of free and nearly free curves starting from a plane cubic curve $C$ and adding some of its hyperosculating conics. We present results that involve nodal cubic curves and the Fermat cubic. In addition, we provide new insight into the geometry of the $27$ hyperosculating conics of the Fermat cubic curve using well-chosen group actions.

Defect of irreducible plane curves with simple singularities

In this note we focus on the defect of singular plane curve that was recently introduced by Dimca. Roughly speaking, the defect of a reduced plane curve measures the discrepancy from the property of being a free curve. We find some lower-bound on the defect for certain classes of irreducible plane curves admitting nodes, ordinary cusps and ordinary triple points. The main result of the note tells us that reduced simply singular plane curves with sufficiently high Arnold exponents are never free.

On the local negativity of surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class

In this note we study the local negativity for certain configurations of smooth rational curves in smooth surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class. We show that for such rational curves there is a bound for the so-called local Harbourne constants, which measure the local negativity phenomenon. Moreover, we provide explicit examples of interesting configurations of rational curves in some K3 and Enriques surfaces and compute their local Harbourne constants.
