Harbourne constants, pull-back clusters and ramified morphisms

We describe the effect of ramified morphisms on Harbourne constants of reduced effective divisors. With this goal, we introduce the pullback of a weighted cluster of infinitely near points under a dominant morphism between surfaces, and describe some of its basic properties. As an application, we describe configurations of curves with transversal intersections and $H$-index arbitarily close to $-25/7\simeq -3.571$, smaller than any previously known result.

Hirzebruch-Kummer covers of algebraic surfaces

The aim of this paper is to show that using some natural curve arrangements in algebraic surfaces and Hirzebruch-Kummer covers one cannot construct new examples of ball-quotients, i.e., minimal smooth complex projective surfaces of general type satisfying equality in the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality.

Local negativity of surfaces with non-negative Koidara dimension and transversal configurations of curves

We give a bound on the H-constants of configurations of smooth curves having transversal intersection points only on an algebraic surface of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We also study in detail configurations of lines on smooth complete intersections $X \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ of multi-degree $d=(d_1, \dots, d_n)$, and we provide a sharp and uniform bound on their H-constants, which only depends on $d$.

Seshadri constants and special configurations of points in the projective plane

In the present note, we focus on certain properties of special curves that might be used in the theory of multi-point Seshadri constants for ample line bundles on the complex projective plane. In particular, we provide three Ein-Lazarsfeld-Xu-type lemmas for plane curves and a lower bound on the multi-point Seshadri constant of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1)$ under the assumption that the chosen points are not very general. In the second part, we focus on certain arrangements of points in the plane which are given by line arrangements. We show that in some cases the multi-point Seshadri constants of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1)$ centered at singular loci of line arrangements are computed by lines from the arrangement having some extremal properties.

We describe the singularities and related properties of the arrangement of 21 reducible polars of Klein's quartic, containing Klein's well-known arrangement of $21$ lines.

On the Sylvester-Gallai and the orchard problem for pseudoline arrangements

We study a non-trivial extreme case of the orchard problem for $12$ pseudolines and we provide a complete classification of pseudoline arrangements having $19$ triple points and $9$ double points. We have also classified those that can be realized with straight lines. They include new examples different from the known example of Böröczky. Since Melchior's inequality also holds for arrangements of pseudolines, we are able to deduce that some combinatorial point-line configurations cannot be realized using pseudolines. In particular, this gives a negative answer to one of Grünbaum's problems. We formulate some open problems which involve our new examples of line arrangements.

On line and pseudoline configurations and ball-quotients

In this note we show that there are no real configurations of $d\geq 4$ lines in the projective plane such that the associated Kummer covers of order $3^{d-1}$ are ball-quotients and there are no configurations of $d\geq 4$ lines such that the Kummer covers of order $4^{d-1}$ are ball-quotients. Moreover, we show that there exists only one configuration of real lines such that the associated Kummer cover of order $5^{d-1}$ is a ball-quotient. In the second part we consider the so-called topological $(n_{k})$-configurations and we show, using Shnurnikov's inequality, that for $n < 27$ there do not exist $(n_{5})$-configurations and and for $n < 41$ there do not exist $(n_{6})$-configurations.

Bounded negativity, Harbourne constants and transversal arrangements of curves

The Bounded Negativity Conjecture predicts that for every complex projective surface $X$ there exists a number $b(X)$ such that $C^2\geq -b(X)$ holds for all reduced curves $C\subset X$. For birational surfaces $f:Y\to X$ there have been introduced certain invariants (Harbourne constants) relating to the effect the numbers $b(X)$, $b(Y)$ and the complexity of the map $f$. These invariants have been studied previously when $f$ is the blowup of all singular points of an arrangement of lines in ${\mathbb P}^2$, of conics and of cubics. In the present note we extend these considerations to blowups of ${\mathbb P}^2$ at singular points of arrangements of curves of arbitrary degree $d$. We also considerably generalize and modify the approach witnessed so far and study transversal arrangements of sufficiently positive curves on arbitrary surfaces with the non-negative Kodaira dimension.

Curve configurations in the projective plane and their characteristic numbers

In this paper we study the concept of characteristic numbers and Chern slopes in the context of curve configurations in the real and complex projective plane. We show that some extremal line configurations inherit the same asymptotic invariants, namely asymptotic Chern slopes and asymptotic Harbourne constants which sheds some light on relations between the bounded negativity conjecture and the geography problem for surfaces of general type. We discuss some properties of Kummer extensions, especially in the context of ball-quotients. Moreover, we prove that for a certain class of smooth curve configurations in the projective plane their characterstic numbers are bounded by $8/3$.

Hirzebruch-type inequalities and plane curve configurations

In this paper we come back to a problem proposed by F. Hirzebruch in the 1980's, namely whether there exists a configuration of smooth conics in the complex projective plane such that the associated desingularization of the Kummer extension is a ball quotient. We extend our considerations to the so-called $d$-configurations of curves on the projective plane and we show that in most cases for a given configuration the associated desingularization of the Kummer extension is not a ball quotient. Moreover, we provide improved versions of Hirzebruch-type inequality for $d$-configurations. Finally, we show that the so-called characteristic numbers (or $γ$ numbers) for $d$-configurations are bounded from above by $8/3$. At the end of the paper we give some examples of surfaces constructed via Kummer extensions branched along conic configurations.

On the boundedness of the denominators in the Zariski decomposition on surfaces

Zariski decompositions play an important role in the theory of algebraic surfaces. For making geometric use of the decomposition of a given divisor, one needs to pass to a multiple of the divisor in order to clear denominators. It is therefore an intriguing question whether the surface has a 'universal denominator' that can be used to simultaneously clear denominators in all Zariski decompositions on the surface. We prove in this paper that, somewhat surprisingly, this condition of bounded Zariski denominators is equivalent to the bounded negativity of curves that is addressed in the Bounded Negativity Conjecture. Furthermore, we provide explicit bounds for Zariski denominators and negativity of curves in terms of each other.

Harbourne constants and conic configurations on the projective plane

In this note we exhibit the so-called Harbourne constants which capture and measure the Bounded Negativity on various birational models of an algebraic surface. We show an estimation for Harbourne constants for conic configurations on the complex projective plane with transversal intersection points.

Numerical and enumerative results on Okounkov bodies

In this note we focus on three independent problems on Okounkov bodies for projective varieties. The main goal is to present a geometric version of the classical Fujita Approximation Theorem, a Jow-type theorem and a cardinality formulae for Minkowski bases on a certain class of smooth projective surfaces.

Minkowski decomposition and generators of the moving cone for toric varieties

We prove that for smooth projective toric varieties, the Okounkov body of a $T$-invariant pseudo-effective divisor with respect to a $T$-invariant flag decomposes as a finite Minkowski sum of indecomposable polytopes. We prove that these indecomposable polytopes form a Minkowski base and that they correspond to the rays in the secondary fan. Moreover, we present an algorithm to find the Minkowski base.

Bounded Negativity and Arrangements of Lines

The Bounded Negativity Conjecture predicts that for any smooth complex surface $X$ there exists a lower bound for the selfintersection of reduced divisors on $X$. This conjecture is open. It is also not known if the existence of such a lower bound is invariant in the birational equivalence class of $X$. In the present note we introduce certain constants $H(X)$ which measure in effect the variance of the lower bounds in the birational equivalence class of $X$. We focus on rational surfaces and relate the value of $H({\mathbb P}^2)$ to certain line arrangements. Our main result is Theorem 3.3 and the main open challenge is Problem 3.10.
