In this note, we study the behaviour of the Lojasiewicz exponent under hyperplane sections and its relation to the order of tangency.
We establish a Gysin formula for Schubert bundles and a strong version of the duality theorem in Schubert calculus on Grassmann bundles. We then combine them to compute the fundamental classes of Schubert bundles in Grassmann bundles, which yields a new proof of the Giambelli formula for vector bundles.
We study the order of tangency between two manifolds of same dimension and give that notion three quite different geometric interpretations. Related aspects of the order of tangency, e.g., regular separation exponents, are also discussed.
In this note, we give Gysin formulas for partial flag bundles for the classical groups. We then give Gysin formulas for Schubert varieties in Grassmann bundles, including isotropic ones. All these formulas are proved in a rather uniform way by using the step-by-step construction of flag bundles and the Gysin formula for a projective bundle. In this way we obtain a comprehensive list of new universal formulas.
We describe the positivity of Thom polynomials of singularities of maps, Lagrangian Thom polynomials and Legendrian Thom polynomials. We show that these positivities come from Schubert calculus.
We report on results of Kraśkiewicz and the author, and Watanabe on KP modules materializing Schubert polynomials, and filtrations having KP modules as their subquotients. We discuss applications of KP filtrations and ample KP bundles to positivity, due respectively to Watanabe and Fulton. The article corresponds to the talk given by the author at the conference "IMPANGA 15" in April 2015.
We give push-forward formulas for all flag bundles of types A, B, C, D. The formulas (and also the proofs) involve only Segre classes of the original vector bundles and characteristic classes of universal bundles. As an application, we provide new determinantal formulas.
We give a formula for pushing forward the classes of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in Grassmann bundles, generalizing Gysin formulas for Schur S- and Q-functions.
We express the diagonals of projective, Grassmann and, more generally, flag bundles of type (A) using the zero schemes of some vector bundle sections, and do the same for their single point subschemes. We discuss diagonal and point properties of these flag bundles. We study when the complex manifolds G/B for other groups have the point and diagonal properties. We discuss explicit formulas for the classes of diagonals of the varieties G/B.
We discuss computations of the Thom polynomials of singularity classes of maps in the basis of Schur functions. We survey the known results about the bound on the length and a rectangle containment for partitions appearing in such Schur function expansions. We describe several recursions for the coefficients. For some singularities, we give old and new computations of their Thom polynomials.
We study Legendrian singularities arising in complex contact geometry. We define a one-parameter family of bases in the ring of Legendrian characteristic classes such that any Legendrian Thom polynomial has nonnegative coefficients when expanded in these bases. The method uses a suitable Lagrange Grassmann bundle on the product of projective spaces. This is an extension of a nonnegativity result for Lagrangian Thom polynomials obtained by the authors previously. For a fixed pecialization, other specializations of the parameter lead to upper bounds for the coefficients of the given basis. One gets also upper bounds of the coefficients from the positivity of classical Thom polynomials (for mappings), obtained previously by the last two authors.
We show that Thom polynomials of Lagrangian singularities have nonnegative coefficients in the basis consisting of Q-functions. The main tool in the proof is nonnegativity of cone classes for globally generated bundles.
We develop algebro-combinatorial tools for computing the Thom polynomials for the Morin singularities $A_i(-)$ ($i\ge 0$). The main tool is the function $F^{(i)}_r$ defined as a combination of Schur functions with certain numerical specializations of Schur polynomials as their coefficients. We show that the Thom polynomial ${\cal T}^{A_i}$ for the singularity $A_i$ (any $i$) associated with maps $({\bf C}^{\bullet},0) \to ({\bf C}^{\bullet+k},0)$, with any parameter $k\ge 0$, under the assumption that $Σ^j=\emptyset$ for all $j\ge 2$, is given by $F^{(i)}_{k+1}$. Equivalently, this says that "the 1-part" of ${\cal T}^{A_i}$ equals $F^{(i)}_{k+1}$. We investigate 2 examples when ${\cal T}^{A_i}$ apart from its 1-part consists also of the 2-part being a single Schur function with some multiplicity. Our computations combine the characterization of Thom polynomials via the "method of restriction equations" of Rimányi et al. with the techniques of Schur functions.
Combining the "method of restriction equations" of Rimányi et al. with the techniques of symmetric functions, we establish the Schur function expansions of the Thom polynomials for the Morin singularities $A_3: ({\bf C}^{\bullet},0)\to ({\bf C}^{\bullet + k},0)$ for any nonnegative integer $k$.
We generalize the notion of Thom polynomials from singularities of maps between two complex manifolds to invariant cones in representations, and collections of vector bundles. We prove that the generalized Thom polynomials, expanded in the products of Schur functions of the bundles, have nonnegative coefficients. For classical Thom polynomials associated with maps of complex manifolds, this gives an extension of our former result for stable singularities to nonnecessary stable ones. We also discuss some related aspects of Thom polynomials, which makes the article expository to some extent.
We give the Thom polynomials for the singularities $I_{2,2}$ associated with maps $({\bf C}^{\bullet},0) \to ({\bf C}^{\bullet+k},0)$ with parameter $k\ge 0$. Our computations combine the characterization of Thom polynomials via the ``method of restriction equations'' of Rimanyi et al. with the techniques of Schur functions.
We study when a smooth variety $X$, embedded diagonally in its Cartesian square, is the zero scheme of a section of a vector bundle of rank $\dim(X)$ on $X\times X$. We call this the diagonal property (D). It was known that it holds for all flag manifolds ${\rm SL}_n/P$. We consider mainly the cases of proper smooth varieties, and the analogous problems for smooth manifolds (the topological case). Our main new observation in the case of proper varieties is a relation between (D) and cohomologically trivial line bundles on $X$, obtained by a variation of Serre's classic argument relating rank 2 vector bundles and codimension 2 subschemes, combined with Serre duality. Based on this, we have several detailed results on surfaces, and some results in higher dimensions. For smooth affine varieties, we observe that for an affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field, the diagonal is in fact a complete intersection; thus (D) holds, using the trivial bundle. We conjecture the existence of smooth affine complex varieties for which (D) fails; this leads to an interesting question on projective modules. The arguments in the topological case have a different flavour, with arguments from homotopy theory, topological K-theory, index theory etc. There are 3 variants of the diagonal problem, depending on the type of vector bundle we want (arbitrary, oriented or complex). We obtain a homotopy theoretic reformulation of the diagonal property as an extension problem for a certain homotopy class of maps. We also have detailed results in several cases: spheres, odd dimensional complex projective quadric hypersurfaces, and manifolds of even dimension $\leq 6$ with an almost complex structure.
Combining the Kazarian approach to Thom polynomials via classifying spaces of singularities with the Fulton-Lazarsfeld theory of numerical positivity for ample vector bundles, we show that the coefficients of various Schur function expansions of the Thom polynomials of stable and unstable singularities are nonnegative.
