Electroweak Transitions of Hyperons and Charmed Baryons: Opportunities and Prospects

We present a phenomenology-driven overview of opportunities and outstanding challenges in baryon electroweak transitions, focusing on hyperon and charmed-baryon processes for which lattice-QCD results are available, including semileptonic decays and selected radiative, dileptonic, and neutrino-induced channels. We identify semileptonic decays of strange and charmed baryons as a particularly promising domain for synergy between phenomenology, experiment, and lattice QCD. Particular emphasis is placed on the determination of vector and axial form factors, the precision and model-independent extraction of $|V_{us}|$ from hyperon semileptonic decays including radiative corrections, and on searches for non-standard interactions through lepton-flavor- and CP-violating observables. We examine the momentum dependence of form factors in ground-state transitions, highlight the emerging $Ξ_c \to Ξ$ semileptonic puzzle stemming from tensions between lattice-QCD predictions and experimental measurements, discuss inclusive decay rates, and outline strategies for extending these studies to transitions involving excited baryon states. For completeness, we review also results involving beauty-baryon decays.

Spheroidal expansion and freeze-out geometry of heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime

A spheroidal model of the expansion of hadronic matter produced in heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime is proposed. It constitutes an extension of the spherically symmetric Siemens-Rasmussen blast-wave model used in our previous works. The spheroidal form of the expansion, combined with a single-freeze-out scenario, allows for a significantly improved description of both the transverse-mass and the rapidity distributions of the produced particles. With the model parameters determined by the hadronic abundances and spectra, we make further predictions of the pion HBT correlation radii that turn out to be in a qualitative agreement with the measured ones. The overall successful description of the data supports the concept of spheroidal symmetry of the produced hadronic systems in this energy range.

Deuteron production in a combined thermal and coalescence framework for heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime

A recently formulated thermal model for hadron production in heavy-ion collisions in the few-GeV energy regime is combined with the idea that some part of protons and neutrons present in the original thermal system forms deuterons via the coalescence mechanism. Using realistic parametrizations of the freeze-out conditions, which reproduce well the spectra of protons and pions, we make predictions for deuteron transverse-momentum and rapidity spectra. The best agreement with the experimentally known deuteron yield is obtained if the freeze-out temperature is relatively high and, accordingly, the system size at freeze-out is rather small. In addition, the standard Gaussian distribution of the relative distance between nucleons is replaced by the distribution resulting from their independent and approximately uniform production inside the initial thermal system.

Dilepton Radiation from Strongly Interacting Systems

We review the current understanding of time-like virtual photon emission from QCD matter. The phenomenology of dilepton emission is discussed and basic theoretical concepts are introduced. The experimental findings are presented, grouped into production of lepton pairs in elementary processes, production off cold nuclear matter and emission from heavy-ion collisions. The review emphasizes the role of dilepton emission as tool for studying exotic phases of QCD matter. Open questions and a route to probe the QCD phase diagram with dileptons are outlined.

Exclusive $f_{1}(1285)$ meson production for energy ranges available at the GSI-FAIR with HADES and PANDA

We evaluate the cross section for the $p p \to p p f_{1}(1285)$ and $p \bar{p} \to p \bar{p} f_{1}(1285)$ reactions at near threshold energies relevant for the HADES and PANDA experiments at GSI-FAIR. We assume that at energies close to the threshold the $ωω\to f_{1}(1285)$ and $ρ^{0} ρ^{0} \to f_{1}(1285)$ fusion processes are the dominant production mechanisms. The vertex for the $VV \to f_{1}$ coupling is derived from an effective coupling Lagrangian. The $g_{ρρf_1}$ coupling constant is extracted from the decay rate of $f_{1}(1285) \to ρ^{0} γ$ using the vector-meson-dominance ansatz. We assume $g_{ωωf_1} = g_{ρρf_1}$, equality of these two coupling constants, based on arguments from the naive quark model and vector-meson dominance. The amplitude for the $VV \to f_{1}$ fusion, supplemented by phenomenological vertex form factors for the process, is given. The differential cross sections at energies close to the threshold are calculated. In order to determine the parameters of the model the $γp \to f_{1}(1285) p$ reaction is discussed in addition and results are compared with the CLAS data. The possibility of a measurement by HADES@GSI is presented and discussed. We performed a Monte Carlo feasibility simulations of the $p p \to p p f_1$ reaction for $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.46 GeV in the $π^+ π^- π^+ π^-$ (not shown explicitly) and $π^+ π^- π^+ π^- π^0$ final states using the PLUTO generator. The latter one is especially promising as a peak in the $π^+ π^- η$ should be observable by HADES.

3D PET image reconstruction based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation Method (MLEM) algorithm

Positron emission tomographs (PET) do not measure an image directly. Instead, they measure at the boundary of the field-of-view (FOV) of PET tomograph a sinogram that consists of measurements of the sums of all the counts along the lines connecting two detectors. As there is a multitude of detectors build-in typical PET tomograph structure, there are many possible detector pairs that pertain to the measurement. The problem is how to turn this measurement into an image (this is called imaging). Decisive improvement in PET image quality was reached with the introduction of iterative reconstruction techniques. This stage was reached already twenty years ago (with the advent of new powerful computing processors). However, three dimensional (3D) imaging remains still a challenge. The purpose of the image reconstruction algorithm is to process this imperfect count data for a large number (many millions) of lines-of-responce (LOR) and millions of detected photons to produce an image showing the distribution of the labeled molecules in space.

Dielectron production in 12C+12C collisions at 2 AGeV with HADES

The invariant-mass spectrum of $e^+ e^-$ pairs produced in $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C collisions at an incident energy of 2 GeV per nucleon has been measured for the first time. The measured pair production probabilities span over five orders of magnitude from the $π^0$-Dalitz to the $ρ/ω$ invariant-mass region. Dalitz decays of $π^0$ and $η$ account for all the yield up to 0.15 GeV/c$^2$, but for only about 50% above this mass. A comparison with model calculations shows that the excess pair yield is likely due to baryon-resonance and vector-meson decays. Transport calculations based on vacuum spectral functions fail, however, to describe the entire mass region.
