Long time existence from interior gluing

We prove the "existence of a piece of Scri near $i^0$" (with most likely poor differentiability of the conformally rescaled metric) for general asymptotically flat data with well-defined energy-momentum. The proof uses scaling and a gluing construction to reduce the problem to Bieri's stability theorem.

Gravitationally induced phase shift on a single photon

The effect of the Earth's gravitational potential on a quantum wave function has only been observed for massive particles. In this paper we present a scheme to measure a gravitationally induced phase shift on a single photon travelling in a coherent superposition along different paths of an optical fiber interferometer. To create a measurable signal for the interaction between the static gravitational potential and the wave function of the photon, we propose a variant of a conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We show that the predicted relative phase difference of $10^{-5}$ radians is measurable even in the presence of fiber noise, provided additional stabilization techniques are implemented for each arm of a large-scale fiber interferometer. Effects arising from the rotation of the Earth and the material properties of the fibers are analysed. We conclude that optical fiber interferometry is a feasible way to measure the gravitationally induced phase shift on a single-photon wave function, and thus provides a means to corroborate the equivalence of the energy of the photon and its effective gravitational mass.

Outer trapped surfaces are dense near MOTSs

We show that any vacuum initial data set containing a marginally outer trapped surface S and satisfying a "no KIDs" condition can be perturbed near S so that S becomes strictly outer trapped in the new vacuum initial data set. This, together with the results in [9], gives a precise sense in which generic initial data containing marginally outer trapped surfaces lead to geodesically incomplete spacetimes.

Unique continuation and extensions of Killing vectors at boundaries for stationary vacuum space-times

Generalizing Riemannian theorems of Anderson-Herzlich and Biquard, we show that two $(n+1)$-dimensional stationary vacuum space-times (possibly with cosmological constant $Λ\in \R$) that coincide up to order one along a timelike hypersurface $\mycal T$ are isometric in a neighbourhood of $\mycal T$. We further prove that KIDS of $\partial M$ extend to Killing vectors near $\partial M$. In the AdS type setting, we show unique continuation near conformal infinity if the metrics have the same conformal infinity and the same undetermined term. Extension near $\partial M$ of conformal Killing vectors of conformal infinity which leave the undetermined Fefferman-Graham term invariant is also established.

Gluing constructions for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with constant scalar curvature

We show that asymptotically hyperbolic initial data satisfying smallness conditions in dimensions $n\ge 3$, or fast decay conditions in $n\ge 5$, or a genericity condition in $n\ge 9$, can be deformed, by a deformation which is supported arbitrarily far in the asymptotic region, to ones which are exactly Kottler ("Schwarzschild- adS") in the asymptotic region.

The light-cone theorem

We prove that the area of cross-sections of light-cones, in space-times satisfying suitable energy conditions, is smaller than or equal to that of the corresponding cross-sections in Minkowski, or de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter space-time. The equality holds if and only if the metric coincides with the corresponding model in the domain of dependence of the light-cone.

Singular Yamabe metrics and initial data with exactly Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter ends

We construct large families of initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant which contain exactly Delaunay ends; these are non-trivial initial data sets which coincide with those for the Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics in regions of infinite extent. From the purely Riemannian geometric point of view, this produces complete, constant positive scalar curvature metrics with exact Delaunay ends which are not globally Delaunay. The ends can be used to construct new compact initial data sets via gluing constructions. The construction provided applies to more general situations where the asymptotic geometry may have non-spherical cross-sections consisting of Einstein metrics with positive scalar curvature.

The classification of static electro--vacuum space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior

We show that static electro--vacuum black hole space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non--degenerate components of the event horizon do not exist. This is done by a careful study of the near-horizon geometry of degenerate horizons, which allows us to eliminate the last restriction of the static electro-vacuum no-hair theory.

Rigid upper bounds for the angular momentum and centre of mass of non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times

We prove upper bounds on angular momentum and centre of mass in terms of the Hamiltonian mass and cosmological constant for non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets satisfying the dominant energy condition. We work in all space-dimensions larger than or equal to three, and allow a large class of asymptotic backgrounds, with spherical and non-spherical conformal infinities; in the latter case, a spin-structure compatibility condition is imposed. We give a large class of non-trivial examples saturating the inequality. We analyse exhaustively the borderline case in space-time dimension four: for spherical cross-sections of Scri, equality together with completeness occurs only in anti-de Sitter space-time. On the other hand, in the toroidal case, regular non-trivial initial data sets saturating the bound exist.

Global solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in higher dimensions

We consider the Einstein-Maxwell equations in space-dimension $n$. We point out that the Lindblad-Rodnianski stability proof applies to those equations whatever the space-dimension $n\ge 3$. In even space-time dimension $n+1\ge 6$ we use the standard conformal method on a Minkowski background to give a simple proof that the maximal globally hyperbolic development of initial data sets which are sufficiently close to the data for Minkowski space-time and which are Schwarzschildian outside of a compact set lead to geodesically complete space-times, with a complete Scri, with smooth conformal structure, and with the gravitational field approaching the Minkowski metric along null directions at least as fast as $r^{-(n-1)/2}$.
