Gaudin models for some classical multivariate distributions

Representations of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra associated with several classical multivariate distributions have played an important role in recent developments in the theory of quantum superintegrable systems. In this work, we analyze the corresponding Gaudin models for the multivariate Hahn, Dirichlet, multinomial, and negative multinomial distributions. More precisely, using tools from representation theory, we construct multivariate orthogonal polynomials with respect to these distributions as common eigenfunctions of Gaudin operators. The polynomials are parametrized by solutions to the Bethe ansatz equations or, equivalently, by the roots of Heine-Stieltjes polynomials.

Compactly supported, orthogonal, continuous piecewise polynomial multiresolution analysis

We present explicit representations in terms of hypergeometric functions for the scaling functions in the $C^0$ orthogonal multiresolution analyses associated with piecewise continuous polynomials. Closed formulas for the Mellin transform of these functions as well as their Fourier transforms are derived. Some new multiresolution analyses whose scaling functions have coefficients that are rational numbers are introduced and discussed.

Super Krawtchouk Polynomials via Lie Superalgebras

Multivariate extensions of the Krawtchouk polynomials have been studied by numerous authors in recent decades by exploring new connections to probability, representation theory and quantum integrability. We develop a theory of multivariate super Krawtchouk polynomials using the representation theory of the general linear Lie superalgebra, extending results of the first author in the classical setting. Specifically, in the present work we generalize the classical Krawtchouk polynomials, prove their orthogonality, construct certain recurrence relations, and discuss their connections with zonal spherical functions arising from a fermionic Fock-space framework in quantum mechanics.

Bernstein-Szegő measures in the plane

We define a class of Bernstein-Szegő measures on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and we establish their spectral properties, providing a natural extension of the one-dimensional theory. We also derive conditions involving finitely many moments, which are new in the two-dimensional setting, and which completely characterize these measures. A key ingredient in the theory on the real line stems from the fact that a measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}$ determines a unique sequence of orthonormal polynomials which gives a simple formula for $dμ/dx $ in the Bernstein-Szegő family. Since there is no canonical way to introduce orthonormal polynomials in the plane, our extension is based on a new identity which connects a Fejér-Riesz factorization of the weight to a polynomial depending on three variables associated with $μ$. Using recent results in the bivariate trigonometric Fejér-Riesz factorization problem, we define a nontrivial two-dimensional extension of the Szegő mapping which provides explicit orthonormal bases of the spaces associated with Bernstein-Szegő measures on $\mathbb{R}^2$. An important part of the paper is devoted to a self-contained development of the Bernstein-Szegő theory for matrix-valued functionals. The proofs combine techniques from real analysis, complex analysis and algebra.

Higher-order heat equation and the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy

In this paper we analyze the heat kernel of the equation $\partial_tv =\pm\mathcal{L} v$, where $\mathcal{L}=\partial_x^N+u_{N-2}(x)\partial_x^{N-2}+\cdots+u_0(x)$ is an $N$-th order differential operator and the $\pm$ sign on the right-hand side is chosen appropriately. Using formal pseudo-differential operators, we derive an explicit formula for Hadamard's coefficients in the expansion of the heat kernel in terms of the resolvent of $\mathcal{L}$. Combining this formula with soliton techniques and Sato's Grassmannian, we establish different properties of Hadamard's coefficients and relate them to the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. In particular, using the correspondence between commutative rings of differential operators and algebraic curves due to Burchnall-Chaundy and Krichever, we prove that the heat kernel consists of finitely many terms if and only if the operator $\mathcal{L}$ belongs to a rank-one commutative ring of differential operators whose spectral curve is rational with only one cusp-like singular point, and the coefficients $u_j(x)$ vanish at $x=\infty$. We also characterize these operators $\mathcal{L}$ as the rational solutions of the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with coefficients $u_j $ vanishing at $x=\infty$, or as the rank-one solutions of the bispectral problem vanishing at $\infty$.

A Burchnall-Chaundy-Krichever Theory for Fractional Differential Operators

Fractional differential (and difference) operators play a role in a number of diverse settings: integrable systems, mirror symmetry, Hurwitz numbers, the Bethe ansatz equations. We prove extensions of the three major results on algebras of commuting (ordinary) differentials operators to the setting of fractional differential operators: (1) the Burchnall-Chaundy theorem that a pair of commuting differential operators is algebraically dependent, (2) the classification of maximal commutative algebras of differential operators in terms of Sato's theory and (3) the Krichever correspondence constructing those of rank 1 in an algebro-geometric way. Unlike the available proofs of the Burchnall-Chaundy theorem which use the action of one differential operator on the kernel of the other, our extension to the fractional case uses bounds on orders of fractional differential operators and growth of algebras, which also presents a new and much shorter proof of the original result. The second main theorem is achieved by developing a new tool of the spectral field of a point in Sato's Grassmannian, which carries more information than the widely used notion of spectral curve of a KP solution. Our Krichever type correspondence for fractional differential operators is based on infinite jet bundles.

Gaudin model for the multinomial distribution

The goal of the paper is to analyze a Gaudin model for a polynomial representation of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra associated with the multinomial distribution. The main result is the construction of an explicit basis of the space of polynomials consisting of common eigenfunctions of Gaudin operators in terms of Aomoto-Gelfand hypergeometric series. The construction shows that the polynomials in this basis are also common eigenfunctions of the operators for a dual Gaudin model acting on the degree indices, and therefore they provide a solution to a multivariate discrete bispectral problem.

Hahn polynomials for hypergeometric distribution

Orthogonal polynomials for the multivariate hypergeometric distribution are defined on lattices in polyhedral domains in $\RR^d$. Their structures are studied through a detailed analysis of classical Hahn polynomials with negative integer parameters. Factorization of the Hahn polynomials is explored and used to explain the relation between the index set of orthogonal polynomials and the lattice set in polyhedral domain. In the multivariate case, these constructions lead to nontrivial families of hypergeometric polynomials vanishing on lattice polyhedra. The generating functions and bispectral properties of the orthogonal polynomials are also discussed.

The Racah algebra: An overview and recent results

Recent results on the Racah algebra $\mathcal{R}_n$ of rank $n - 2$ are reviewed. $\mathcal{R}_n$ is defined in terms of generators and relations and sits in the centralizer of the diagonal action of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ in $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes n}$. Its connections with multivariate Racah polynomials are discussed. It is shown to be the symmetry algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $ (n-1)$ - sphere and a number of interesting realizations are provided.

Hahn polynomials on polyhedra and quantum integrability

Orthogonal polynomials with respect to the hypergeometric distribution on lattices in polyhedral domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which include hexagons in ${\mathbb R}^2$ and truncated tetrahedrons in ${\mathbb R}^3$, are defined and studied. The polynomials are given explicitly in terms of the classical one-dimensional Hahn polynomials. They are also characterized as common eigenfunctions of a family of commuting partial difference operators. These operators provide symmetries for a system that can be regarded as a discrete extension of the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere. Moreover, the discrete system is proved to possess all essential properties of the continuous system. In particular, the symmetry operators for the discrete Hamiltonian define a representation of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra on the space of orthogonal polynomials, and an explicit set of $2d-1$ generators for the symmetry algebra is constructed. Furthermore, other discrete quantum superintegrable systems, which extend the quantum harmonic oscillator, are obtained by considering appropriate limits of the parameters.

Darboux transformations from the Appell-Lauricella operator

We define two isomorphic algebras of differential operators: the first algebra consists of ordinary differential operators and contains the hypergeometric differential operator, while the second one consists of partial differential operators in $d$ variables and contains the Appell-Lauricella partial differential operator. Using this isomorphism, we construct partial differential operators which are Darboux transformations from polynomials of the Appell-Lauricella operator. We show that these operators can be embedded into commutative algebras of partial differential operators, containing $d$ mutually commuting and algebraically independent partial differential operators, which can be considered as quantum completely integrable systems. Moreover, these algebras can be simultaneously diagonalized on the space of polynomials leading to extensions of the Jacobi polynomials orthogonal with respect to the Dirichlet distribution on the simplex.

Bargmann and Barut-Girardello models for the Racah algebra

The Racah algebra and its higher rank extension are the algebras underlying the univariate and multivariate Racah polynomials. In this paper we develop two new models in which the Racah algebra naturally arises as symmetry algebra, namely the Bargmann model and the Barut-Girardello model. We show how both models are connected with the superintegrable model of Miller et al. The Bargmann model moreover leads to a new realization of the Racah algebra of rank $n$ as $n$-variable differential operators. Our conceptual approach also allows us to rederive the basis functions of the superintegrable model without resorting to separation of variables.

Symmetry algebra for the generic superintegrable system on the sphere

The goal of the present paper is to provide a detailed study of irreducible representations of the algebra generated by the symmetries of the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere. Appropriately normalized, the symmetry operators preserve the space of polynomials. Under mild conditions on the free parameters, maximal abelian subalgebras of the symmetry algebra, generated by Jucys-Murphy elements, have unique common eigenfunctions consisting of families of Jacobi polynomials in $d$ variables. We describe the action of the symmetries on the basis of Jacobi polynomials in terms of multivariable Racah operators, and combine this with different embeddings of symmetry algebras of lower dimensions to prove that the representations restricted on the space of polynomials of a fixed total degree are irreducible.

Coupling coefficients of $su_q(1,1)$ and multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials

Gasper & Rahman's multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials are shown to arise as connection coefficients between families of multivariate $q$-Hahn or $q$-Jacobi polynomials. The families of $q$-Hahn polynomials are constructed as nested Clebsch--Gordan coefficients for the positive-discrete series representations of the quantum algebra $su_q(1,1)$. This gives an interpretation of the multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials in terms of $3nj$ symbols. It is shown that the families of $q$-Hahn polynomials also arise in wavefunctions of $q$-deformed quantum Calogero--Gaudin superintegrable systems.

Solvable Lie algebras and graphs

We define a solvable extension of the graph 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of [5] by adding elements corresponding to the 3-cliques of the graph. We study some of their basic properties and we prove that two such Lie algebras are isomorphic if and only if their graphs are isomorphic. We also briefly discuss some metric properties, providing examples of homogeneous spaces with nonpositive curvature operator and solvsolitons.

The generic quantum superintegrable system on the sphere and Racah operators

We consider the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere with potential $V(y)=\sum_{k=1}^{d+1}\frac{b_k}{y_k^2}$, where $b_k$ are parameters. Appropriately normalized, the symmetry operators for the Hamiltonian define a representation of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra on the space of polynomials orthogonal with respect to the Dirichlet distribution. The Gaudin subalgebras generated by Jucys-Murphy elements are diagonalized by families of Jacobi polynomials in $d$ variables on the simplex. We define a set of generators for the symmetry algebra and we prove that their action on the Jacobi polynomials is represented by the multivariable Racah operators introduced in arXiv:0705.1469. The constructions also yield a new Lie-theoretic interpretation of the bispectral property for Tratnik's multivariable Racah polynomials.

Connection coefficients for classical orthogonal polynomials of several variables

Connection coefficients between different orthonormal bases satisfy two discrete orthogonal relations themselves. For classical orthogonal polynomials whose weights are invariant under the action of the symmetric group, connection coefficients between a basis consisting of products of hypergeometric functions and another basis obtained from the first one by applying a permutation are studied. For the Jacobi polynomials on the simplex, it is shown that the connection coefficients can be expressed in terms of Tratnik's multivariable Racah polynomials and their weights. This gives, in particular, a new interpretation of the hidden duality between the variables and the degree indices of the Racah polynomials, which lies at the heart of their bispectral properties. These techniques also lead to explicit formulas for connection coefficients of Hahn and Krawtchouk polynomials of several variables, as well as for orthogonal polynomials on balls and spheres.

Alpert multiwavelets and Legendre-Angelesco multiple orthogonal polynomials

We show that the multiwavelets, introduced by Alpert in 1993, are related to type I Legendre-Angelesco multiple orthogonal polynomials. We give explicit formulas for these Legendre-Angelesco polynomials and for the Alpert multiwavelets. The multiresolution analysis can be done entirely using Legendre polynomials, and we give an algorithm, using Cholesky factorization, to compute the multiwavelets and a method, using the Jacobi matrix for Legendre polynomials, to compute the matrices in the scaling relation for any size of the multiplicity of the multiwavelets.
