Measurement-Selective Dynamical Symmetry Breaking

Continuous measurement is commonly associated with decoherence and the loss of symmetry. Here, we show that weak continuous measurements can instead act selectively: depending on the measured observable, they may either preserve or remove a dynamical relation between initially mirrored states. Using tunneling between the $|+1\rangle$ and $|-1\rangle$ states of a spin-1 system, we demonstrate that measurements of $S_x$ and $S_y$ break the symmetry of the tunneling dynamics in the presence of a longitudinal bias, whereas measurement of $S_z$ leaves it intact. We formulate this behavior within the Lindblad framework, support it with numerical simulations, and reproduce the dissipative dynamics in a two-qubit quantum circuit using Trotterized evolution and stochastic collective rotations. Our results establish continuous measurement as a selective tool for controlling dynamical symmetry in open quantum systems.

Tuning the initial phase to control the final state of a driven qubit

A driven quantum system can experience Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) transitions between its states, when the respective energy levels quasi-cross. If this quasicrossing is traversed repeatedly under periodic driving, the trajectories can interfere either constructively or destructively. In the latter case, known as coherent destruction of tunneling, the transition between the energy states is suppressed. Even for the double-passage case, the accumulated phase difference (also referred to as the Stuckelberg phase) can lead to destructive interference, resulting in no transition. In this paper, we discuss a similar process for the single-passage dynamics. We study the LZSM single-passage problem starting from a superposition state. The phase difference of this initial state results in interference. When this results in either a zero or a unit transition probability, such a situation can be called single-passage complete localization in a target state. The phase can be chosen so that the occupation probabilities do not change after the transition, which is analogous to the problem of transitionless driving. We demonstrate how varying the system parameters (driving velocity, initial phase, initial detuning) can be used for quantum coherent control.

Origami launcher

The article studies the elastic and locomotive properties of Miura-ori-type paper origami. The mechanics of a single paper crease is studied experimentally, and its non-elastic properties turn out to be crucial. The entire origami construction is then described as a collection of individual creases, its capability to launch small objects is evaluated, and the equation of motion is found. Thus, the height of the launched ball is studied theoretically and experimentally as a function of governing parameters.
