Graphene-Gold THz Metasurfaces with Tailored Resonant Structure for Enhanced Nonlinear Response

Graphene's exceptional nonlinear optical properties combined with resonant photonic structures offer a promising pathway for efficient nonlinear applications at terahertz (THz) frequencies. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a fabrication-friendly hybrid nonlinear metasurface composed of gold patches integrated with uniform graphene, circumventing the need for complex graphene patterning. The structure supports strong localized resonances that enhance nonlinear interactions. By exploiting resonant enhancement at both the fundamental and third harmonic frequencies, we predict via simulations third-harmonic generation efficiencies as high as -15 dB (3.2%) under continuous-wave excitation at modest intensities (0.1 MW/cm$^2$). The metasurface is fabricated via electron-beam lithography and experimentally characterized using THz time-domain spectroscopy. Under pulsed excitation, we experimentally observe pronounced nonlinear frequency shifts up to 0.5~THz (12.5% fractional change), driven by self-phase modulation, consistent with simulation results. These findings highlight the potential of tailored graphene-based metasurfaces for efficient nonlinear THz photonic devices.

Advantages of optical modulation in terahertz imaging for study of graphene layers

It was demonstrated that optical modulation together with simultaneous terahertz (THz) imaging application enables an increase in contrast by an order of magnitude illustrating hence the technique as convenient contactless tool for characterization of graphene deposited on high-resistivity silicon substrates. It was shown that the single- and double-layer graphene can be discriminated and characterized via variation of THz image contrast using a discrete frequency in a continuous wave mode. Modulation depth of 45 % has been reached, the contrast variation from 0.16 up to 0.23 is exposed under laser illumination for the single and double layer graphene, respectively. The technique was applied in the development and investigation of graphene-based optical diffractive elements for THz imaging systems.

Ultrafast modulation in a THz graphene-based flat absorber through negative photoconductivity

We present the experimental and theoretical study of an ultrafast graphene based thin film absorption modulator for operation in the THz regime. The flat modulator is composed of a graphene sheet placed on a dielectric layer backed by a metallic back reflector. A near IR pulse induces the generation of hot carriers in the graphene sheet reducing effectively its conductivity. The system provides a platform with ultrafast modulation capability for flat optics and graphene based metasurfaces applications.
