Long-Time and Short-Time Dynamics in a Weighted-Median Opinion Model on Networks

Social interactions influence people's opinions. In some situations, these interactions eventually yield a consensus opinion; in others, they can lead to opinion fragmentation and the formation of different opinion groups in the form of ``echo chambers''. Consider a social network of individuals with continuous-valued scalar opinions, and suppose that they can change their opinions when they interact with each other. In many models of the opinion dynamics of individuals in a network, it is common for opinion updates to depend on the mean opinion of interacting individuals. As an alternative, which may be more realistic in some situations, we study an opinion model with an opinion-update rule that depends on the weighted median of the opinions of interacting individuals. Through numerical simulations of our median-update opinion model, we investigate how the final opinion distribution depends on network structure. For configuration-model networks, we also derive a mean-field approximation for the asymptotic dynamics of the opinion distribution when there are infinitely many individuals. We numerically investigate its accuracy for short-time opinion dynamics on various networks.

Helicity in Hamiltonian dynamical systems

Helicity plays a unique role as an integral invariant of a dynamical system. In this paper, the concept of helicity in the general setting of Hamiltonian dynamics is discussed. It is shown, through examples, how the conservation of overall helicity can imply a bound on other quantities of the motion in a nontrivial way.

Optimal Forecast Reconciliation with Uncertainty Quantification

We propose to estimate the weight matrix used for forecast reconciliation as parameters in a general linear model in order to quantify its uncertainty. This implies that forecast reconciliation can be formulated as an orthogonal projection from the space of base-forecast errors into a coherent linear subspace. We use variance decomposition together with the Wishart distribution to derive the central estimator for the forecast-error covariance matrix. In addition, we prove that distance-reducing properties apply to the reconciled forecasts at all levels of the hierarchy as well as to the forecast-error covariance. A covariance matrix for the reconciliation weight matrix is derived, which leads to improved estimates of the forecast-error covariance matrix. We show how shrinkage can be introduced in the formulated model by imposing specific priors on the weight matrix and the forecast-error covariance matrix. The method is illustrated in a simulation study that shows consistent improvements in the log-score. Finally, standard errors for the weight matrix and the variance-separation formula are illustrated using a case study of forecasting electricity load in Sweden.

Optimal self-induced stochastic resonance in multiplex neural networks: electrical versus chemical synapses

Electrical and chemical synapses shape the dynamics of neural networks and their functional roles in information processing have been a longstanding question in neurobiology. In this paper, we investigate the role of synapses on the optimization of the phenomenon of self-induced stochastic resonance in a delayed multiplex neural network by using analytical and numerical methods. We consider a two-layer multiplex network, in which at the intra-layer level neurons are coupled either by electrical synapses or by inhibitory chemical synapses. For each isolated layer, computations indicate that weaker electrical and chemical synaptic couplings are better optimizers of self-induced stochastic resonance. In addition, regardless of the synaptic strengths, shorter electrical synaptic delays are found to be better optimizers of the phenomenon than shorter chemical synaptic delays, while longer chemical synaptic delays are better optimizers than longer electrical synaptic delays -- in both cases, the poorer optimizers are in fact worst. It is found that electrical, inhibitory, or excitatory chemical multiplexing of the two layers having only electrical synapses at the intra-layer levels can each optimize the phenomenon. And only excitatory chemical multiplexing of the two layers having only inhibitory chemical synapses at the intra-layer levels can optimize the phenomenon. These results may guide experiments aimed at establishing or confirming the mechanism of self-induced stochastic resonance in networks of artificial neural circuits, as well as in real biological neural networks.

Phase Space Structures of k-threshold Sequential Dynamical Systems

Sequential dynamical systems (SDS) are used to model a wide range of processes occurring on graphs or networks. The dynamics of such discrete dynamical systems is completely encoded by their phase space, a directed graph whose vertices and edges represent all possible system configurations and transitions between configurations respectively. Direct calculation of the phase space is in most cases a computationally demanding task. However, for some classes of SDS one can extract information on the connected component structure of phase space from the constituent elements of the SDS, such as its base graph and vertex functions. We present a number of novel results about the connected component structure of the phase space for k-threshold dynamical system with binary state spaces. We establish relations between the structure of the components, the threshold value, and the update sequence. Also fixed-point reachability from garden of eden configurations is investigated and upper bounds for the length of paths in the phase space are shown to only depend on the size of the vertex set of the base graph.

Equation-Free Analysis of Macroscopic Behavior in Traffic and Pedestrian Flow

Equation-free methods make possible an analysis of the evolution of a few coarse-grained or macroscopic quantities for a detailed and realistic model with a large number of fine-grained or microscopic variables, even though no equations are explicitly given on the macroscopic level. This will facilitate a study of how the model behavior depends on parameter values including an understanding of transitions between different types of qualitative behavior. These methods are introduced and explained for traffic jam formation and emergence of oscillatory pedestrian counter flow in a corridor with a narrow door.
