Gravity and Yang-Mills Amplitude Relations

Using only general features of the S-matrix and quantum field theory, we prove by induction the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations that link products of gauge theory amplitudes to gravity amplitudes at tree level. As a bonus of our analysis, we provide a novel and more symmetric form of these relations. We also establish an infinite tower of new identities between amplitudes in gauge theories.

The Momentum Kernel of Gauge and Gravity Theories

We derive an explicit formula for factorizing an $n$-point closed string amplitude into open string amplitudes. Our results are phrased in terms of a momentum kernel which in the limit of infinite string tension reduces to the corresponding field theory kernel. The same momentum kernel encodes the monodromy relations which lead to the minimal basis of color-ordered amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory. There are interesting consequences of the momentum kernel pertaining to soft limits of amplitudes. We also comment on surprising links between gravity and certain combinations of kinematic and color factors in gauge theory.

New Identities among Gauge Theory Amplitudes

Color-ordered amplitudes in gauge theories satisfy non-linear identities involving amplitude products of different helicity configurations. We consider the origin of such identities and connect them to the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations between gravity and gauge theory amplitudes. Extensions are made to one-loop order of the full N=4 super Yang-Mills multiplet.

Monodromy and Jacobi-like Relations for Color-Ordered Amplitudes

We discuss monodromy relations between different color-ordered amplitudes in gauge theories. We show that Jacobi-like relations of Bern, Carrasco and Johansson can be introduced in a manner that is compatible with these monodromy relations. The Jacobi-like relations are not the most general set of equations that satisfy this criterion. Applications to supergravity amplitudes follow straightforwardly through the KLT-relations. We explicitly show how the tree-level relations give rise to non-trivial identities at loop level.

Minimal Basis for Gauge Theory Amplitudes

Identities based on monodromy for integrations in string theory are used to derive relations between different color ordered tree-level amplitudes in both bosonic and supersymmetric string theory. These relations imply that the color ordered tree-level n-point gauge theory amplitudes can be expanded in a minimal basis of (n-3)! amplitudes. This result holds for any choice of polarizations of the external states and in any number of dimensions.

The Chiral Condensate in a Finite Volume

Chiral perturbation theory at finite four-volume V (=L^3T) is reconsidered with a view towards finding a computational scheme that can deal with any value of M_πL, where M_πis a generic Nambu-Goldstone mass. The momentum zero modes that cause the usual p-expansion to fail in the chiral limit are treated separately, and partly integrated out to all orders. In this way the theory remains infrared finite in the perturbative expansion, and the chiral limit can be considered at finite volume. We illustrate the technique by computing the quark condensate in a finite volume, smoothly connecting standard results in the p-regime for larger masses with those of the epsilon-regime for smaller masses. From the partially quenched theory we also obtain the spectral density of the Dirac operator, a smooth function from the microscopic region to the bulk region of the p-regime.

Finite-volume Correction to the Pion Decay Constant in the Epsilon-Regime

In the chiral limit of QCD, the pion decay constant F can be extracted from lattice gauge theory by means of a coupling to isospin chemical potential. Here we compute the leading correction due to finite volume in the epsilon-expansion of chiral perturbation theory. A comparison is made to recent Monte Carlo data.

Geometry of Orbifolded Supersymmetric Lattice Gauge Theories

We prove that the prescription for construction of supersymmetric lattice gauge theories by orbifolding and deconstruction directly leads to Catterall's geometrical discretization scheme in general. These two prescriptions always give the same lattice discretizations when applied to theories of p-form fields. We also show that the geometrical discretization scheme can be applied to more general theories.

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory in the epsilon-regime

We calculate meson correlators in the epsilon-regime within partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. The valence quark masses and sea quark masses can be chosen arbitrary and all non-degenerate. Taking some of the sea quark masses to infinity, one obtains a smooth connection among the theories with different number of flavors, as well as the quenched theory. These results can be directly compared with lattice QCD simulations.

Classification of Supersymmetric Lattice Gauge Theories by Orbifolding

We provide a general classification of supersymmetric lattice gauge theories that can be obtained from orbifolding of theories with four and eight supercharges. We impose at least one preserved supercharge on the lattice and Lorentz invariance in the naive continuum limit. Starting with four supercharges, we obtain one two-dimensional lattice gauge theory, identical to the one already given in the literature. Starting with eight supercharges, we obtain a unique three-dimensional lattice gauge theory and infinitely many two-dimensional lattice theories. They can be classified according to seven distinct groups, five of which have two preserved supercharges while the others have only one.

Relations among Supersymmetric Lattice Gauge Theories via Orbifolding

We show how to derive Catterall's supersymmetric lattice gauge theories directly from the general principle of orbifolding followed by a variant of the usual deconstruction. These theories are forced to be complexified due to a clash between charge assignments under U(1)-symmetries and lattice assignments in terms of scalar, vector and tensor components for the fermions. Other prescriptions for how to discretize the theory follow automatically by orbifolding and deconstruction. We find that Catterall's complexified model for the two-dimensional N=(2,2) theory has two independent preserved supersymmetries. We comment on consistent truncations to lattice theories without this complexification and with the correct continuum limit. The construction of lattice theories this way is general, and can be used to derive new supersymmetric lattice theories through the orbifolding procedure. As an example, we apply the prescription to topologically twisted four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We show that a consistent truncation is closely related to the lattice formulation previously given by Sugino.

Divergent chiral condensate in the quenched Schwinger model

We calculate numerically the eigenvalue distribution of the overlap Dirac operator in the quenched Schwinger model on a lattice. The distribution does not fit any of the three universality classes of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and its strong volume dependence indicates that the chiral condensate in the quenched theory is an ill-defined and divergent quantity. When we reweight configurations with the Dirac determinant to study the theory with N_f=1, we obtain a distribution of eigenvalues that is well-behaved and consistent with the theory of explicit symmetry breaking due to the anomaly.

Universal Massive Spectral Correlators and QCD_3

Based on random matrix theory in the unitary ensemble, we derive the double-microscopic massive spectral correlators corresponding to the Dirac operator of QCD_3 with an even number of fermions N_f. We prove that these spectral correlators are universal, and demonstrate that they satisfy exact massive spectral sum rules of QCD_3 in a phase where flavor symmetries are spontaneously broken according to U(N_f) -> U(N_f/2) x U(N_f/2).

Massive Spectral Sum Rules for the Dirac Operator

Massive spectral sum rules are derived for Dirac operators of $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ flavors. The universal microscopic massive spectral densities of random matrix theory, where known, are all consistent with these sum rules.

On Spin and Matrix Models in the Complex Plane

We describe various aspects of statistical mechanics defined in the complex temperature or coupling-constant plane. Using exactly solvable models, we analyse such aspects as renormalization group flows in the complex plane, the distribution of partition function zeros, and the question of new coupling-constant symmetries of complex-plane spin models. The double-scaling form of matrix models is shown to be exactly equivalent to finite-size scaling of 2-dimensional spin systems. This is used to show that the string susceptibility exponents derived from matrix models can be obtained numerically with very high accuracy from the scaling of finite-$N$ partition function zeros in the complex plane.
