N=1 Super Yang-Mills from Supergravity: The UV-IR Connection

We consider the Maldacena-Nunez supergravity solution corresponding to N=1 super Yang-Mills within the approach by Di Vecchia, Lerda and Merlatti. We show that if one uses the radial distance as a field theory scale, the corresponding beta function has an infrared fixed point. Assuming this to be a physical property for all four dimensional non-singular renormalization schemes, we use the relation between the gaugino condensate and its dual to investigate the connection between the IR and UV behaviors. Imposing the ``field theory boundary condition'' that the first two terms in the perturbative UV beta function are universal, the fixed point is found to be of first order, and the slope of the IR beta function is also fixed.

Some remarks on the "classical" large N limit

It has been proposed some time ago that the large $N-$limit can be understood as a ``classical limit'', where commutators in some sense approach the corresponding Poisson brackets. We discuss this in the light of some recent numerical results for an SU(N) gauge model, which do not agree with this ``classicality'' of the large N-limit. The world sheet becomes very crumpled. We speculate that this effect would disappear in supersymmetric models.

Turbulent Binary Fluids: A Shell Model Study

We introduce a shell (``GOY'') model for turbulent binary fluids. The variation in the concentration between the two fluids acts as an active scalar leading to a redefined conservation law for the energy, which is incorporated into the model together with a conservation law for the scalar. The model is studied numerically at very high values of the Prandtl and Reynolds numbers and we investigate the properties close to the critical point of the miscibility gap where the diffusivity vanishes. A peak develops in the spectrum of the scalar, showing that a strongly turbulent flow leads to an increase in the mixing time. The peak is, however, not very pronounced. The mixing time diverges with the Prandtl number as a power law with an exponent of approximately 0.9. The continuum limit of the shell equations leads to a set of equations which can be solved by a scaling ansatz, consistent with an exact scaling of the Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial range. In this case a weak peak also persists for a certain time in the spectrum of the scalar. Exact analytic solutions of the continuous shell equations are derived in the inertial range. Starting with fluids at rest, from an initial variation of the concentration difference, one can provoke a ``spontaneous'' generation of a velocity field, analogous to MHD in the early universe.

The effect of Silk damping on primordial magnetic fields

We study the effects of plasma viscosity on the dynamics of primordial magnetic fields by simulating magnetohydrodynamics in the early universe by appropriate non-linear cascade models. We find numerically that even in the presence of large kinetic viscosity, magnetic energy is transferred to large length scales. There are indications, however, that the inverse cascade stops at a given time which depends on the magnitude of viscosity. For realistic viscosities we do not find equipartition between magnetic and kinetic energies.

Large-scale magnetic fields from hydromagnetic turbulence in the very early universe

We investigate hydromagnetic turbulence of primordial magnetic fields using magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in an expanding universe. We present the basic, covariant MHD equations, find solutions for MHD waves in the early universe, and investigate the equations numerically for random magnetic fields in two spatial dimensions. We find the formation of magnetic structures at larger and larger scales as time goes on. In three dimensions we use a cascade (shell) model, that has been rather successful in the study of certain aspects of hydrodynamic turbulence. Using such a model we find that after ${\cal O}(10^9)$ times the initial time the scale of the magnetic field fluctuation (in the comoving frame) has increased by 4-5 orders of magnitude as a consequence of an inverse cascade effect (i.e. transfer of energy from smaller to larger scales). Thus {\it at large scales} primordial magnetic fields are considerably stronger than expected from considerations which do not take into account the effects of MHD turbulence.

On the Evolution of Magnetic Fields in the Early Universe

We address the question of the existence of magnetic domains in a recent scenario for the creation of primordial magnetic fields. We write down the magnetohydrodynamic equation in an expanding universe in the infinite conductivity limit and discuss its solution. No domains are found.

Ferromagnetic Vacuum and Galactic Magnetic Fields

Non-abelian gauge theories may have a ferromagnet-like vacuum with a non-zero magnetic field, which also exists at finite temperature. We argue that the formation of the ferromagnet-like vacuum at GUT scales gives rise to a Maxwell magnetic field imprinted on the comoving plasma, and that it is energetically favourable to align the field in different correlation volumes. This results in a coherent magnetic field pertaining the whole universe, with a magnitude $B_{now}\simeq 10^{-14}\G$, which is of the correct size to serve as the seed field for the galactic dynamo.
