Fourth Order Accurate Finite Volume CWENO Scheme For Astrophysical MHD Problems

In this work, a simple fourth-order accurate finite volume semi-discrete scheme is introduced to solve astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) problems on Cartesian meshes. Hydrodynamic quantities like density, momentum and energy are discretised as volume averages. The magnetic field and electric field components are discretised as area and line averages respectively, so as to employ the constrained transport technique, which preserves the solenoidality of the magnetic field to machine precision. The present method makes use of a dimension-by-dimension approach employing a 1-D fourth-order accurate centrally weighted essentially non-oscillatory (1D-CWENO4) reconstruction polynomial. A fourth-order accurate, strong stability preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta method is used to evolve the semi-discrete MHD equations in time. Higher-order accuracy of the scheme is confirmed in various linear and nonlinear multi-dimensional tests and the robustness of the method in avoiding unphysical numerical artifacts in the solution is demonstrated through several complex MHD problems.

Lower-hybrid oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron-ion plasma

In this paper, we obtain the dispersion relation for the lower-hybrid oscillations/waves in a cold magnetized electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma. It is found that the frequency of the lower-hybrid oscillations in an e-p-i plasma is approximate $1/\sqrt{3}$ times the frequency of lower-hybrid oscillations in an electron-ion (e-i) plasma, provided the plasma density is high, and the equilibrium densities of the positron and the ion are balanced. The present work may have some relevance for laboratory/astrophysical e-p-i plasmas.

A novel numerical scheme for nonlinear electron-plasma oscillations

In this work, we suggest an easy-to-code higher-order finite volume semi-discrete scheme to analyze the nonlinear behavior of the electron-plasma oscillations by solving electron fluid equations numerically. The present method employs a fourth-order accurate centrally weighted essentially nonoscillatory reconstruction (CWENO4) polynomial for estimating the numerical flux at the grid-cell interfaces, and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for the time integration. The numerical implementation is validated by reproducing earlier results for both non-dissipative and dissipative cold plasmas. The stability of the present scheme is illustrated by evolving the nonlinear electron plasma oscillations in a cold non-dissipative plasma for hundred plasma periods, which also display a negligible numerical dissipation. The fourth-order accuracy of the existing approach is also confirmed by evaluating the convergence of errors for the nonlinear electron plasma oscillations in a cold non-dissipative plasma.

Nonlinear electrostatic oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron plasma

We study the spatio-temporal evolution of the nonlinear electrostatic oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron (e-p) plasma using both analytics and simulations. Using a perturbative method we demonstrate that the nonlinear solutions change significantly when a pure electrostatic mode is excited at the linear level instead of a mixed upper-hybrid and zero-frequency mode that is considered in a recent study. The pure electrostatic oscillations undergo phase mixing nonlinearly. However, the presence of the magnetic field significantly delays the phase-mixing compared to that observed in the corresponding unmagnetized plasma. Using 1D PIC simulations we then analyze the damping of the primary modes of the pure oscillations in detail and infer the dependence of the phase-mixing time on the magnetic field and the amplitude of the oscillations. The results are remarkably different from those found for the mixed upper-hybrid mode mentioned above. Exploiting the symmetry of the e-p plasma we then explain a generalized symmetry of our non-linear solutions. The symmetry allows us to construct a unique nonlinear solution up to the second order which does not show any signature of phase mixing but results in a nonlinear wave traveling at upper-hybrid frequency. Our investigations have relevance for laboratory/astrophysical e-p plasmas.

Generation of Low Frequency Plasma Waves After Wave-Breaking

Spatio-temporal evolution of a non-relativistic electrostatic waves in a cold plasma has been studied in the wave-breaking regime using a 1D particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that plasma gets heated after the wave-breaking but a fraction of initial energy always remains with the remnant wave in the form of BGK mode in warm plasma. An interesting finding of this work is that the frequency of the resultant BGK wave is found be below electron plasma frequency which decreases with increasing initial amplitude. Moreover, the acceleration mechanism after the wave-breaking is also found to be different from the previous work. In order to explain the results observed in the numerical experiments, a simplified theoretical model is constructed which exhibits a good agreement with the simulation. These investigations have direct relevance in wake-field acceleration experiments.

Higher Order Central Schemes for Multi-dimensional Hyperbolic Problems

Different ways of implementing dimension-by-dimension CWENO reconstruction are discussed and the most efficient method is applied to develop a fourth order central scheme for multi-dimensional hyperbolic problems. Fourth order accuracy and shock capturing nature of the scheme are demonstrated in various nonlinear multi-dimensional problems. In order to show the overall performance of the present central scheme numerical errors and non-oscillatory behavior are compared with existing multi-dimensional CWENO based central schemes for various multi-dimensional problems. Moreover, the benefits of the present fourth order central scheme over third order implementation are shown by comparing the numerical dissipation and computational cost between the two.

Nonlinear oscillations and waves in multi-species cold plasmas

The spatio-temporal evolution of nonlinear oscillations in multi-species plasma is revisited to provide more insight into the physics of phase mixing by constructing two sets of nonlinear solutions up to the second order. The first solution exhibits perfect oscillations in the linear regime and phase mixing appears only nonlinearly in the second order as a response to the ponderomotive forces. This response can be both direct and indirect. The indirect contribution of the ponderomotive forces appears through self-consistently generated low frequency fields. Furthermore, the direct and indirect contributions of the ponderomotive forces on the phase mixing process is explored and it is found that the indirect contribution is negligible in an electron-ion plasma and it disappears in the case of electron-positron plasma, yet represents an equal contribution in the electron-positron-ion plasma. However, the second solution does not exhibit any phase mixing due to the absence of ponderomotive forces but results in an undistorted nonlinear traveling wave. These investigations have relevance for laboratory/astrophysical multi-species plasma.
