Maximizing bandgaps in two-dimensional photonic crystals: a variational algorithm

We present an algorithm for the maximization of photonic bandgaps in two-dimensional crystals. Once the translational symmetries of the underlying structure have been imposed, our algorithm finds a global maximal (and complete, if one exists) bandgap. Additionally, we prove two remarkable results related to maximal bandgaps: the so-called `maximum contrast' rule, and about the location in the Brillouin zone of band edges.

Bandgap Extremization: Some Exact Results

We present here a variational method for maximizing the bandgap in a one-dimensional system where the potential is subject to given constraints. Two specific examples are studied in detail. In the first, we show that if the potential is constrained to lie between two values, the largest bandgap is obtained by a mixture of the highest and lowest potential - an exact result valid in any dimension. The second example fixes the first and second moments of the potential and seeks to extremize the bandgap. An exact result is obtained. Finally, we indicate how our techniques may be applied to photonic bandgaps.

Quantum Clock Synchronization: a Multi-Party Protocol

We present a multi-party quantum clock synchronization protocol that utilizes shared prior entanglement and broadcast of classical information to synchronize spatially separated clocks. Notably, it is necessary only for any one party to publish classical information. Consequently, the efficacy of the method is independent of the relative location of the parties. The suggested protocol is robust and does not require precise sequencing of procedural steps.
