How does Casimir energy fall? III. Inertial forces on vacuum energy

We have recently demonstrated that Casimir energy due to parallel plates, including its divergent parts, falls like conventional mass in a weak gravitational field. The divergent parts were suitably interpreted as renormalizing the bare masses of the plates. Here we corroborate our result regarding the inertial nature of Casimir energy by calculating the centripetal force on a Casimir apparatus rotating with constant angular speed. We show that the centripetal force is independent of the orientation of the Casimir apparatus in a frame whose origin is at the center of inertia of the apparatus.

Gravitational and Inertial Mass of Casimir Energy

It has been demonstrated, using variational methods, that quantum vacuum energy gravitates according to the equivalence principle, at least for the finite Casimir energies associated with perfectly conducting parallel plates. This conclusion holds independently of the orientation of the plates. We review these arguments and add further support to this conclusion by considering parallel semitransparent plates, that is, $δ$-function potentials, acting on a massless scalar field, in a spacetime defined by Rindler coordinates. We calculate the force on systems consisting of one or two such plates undergoing acceleration perpendicular to the plates. In the limit of small acceleration we recover (via the equivalence principle) the situation of weak gravity, and find that the gravitational force on the system is just $M\mathbf{g}$, where $\mathbf{g}$ is the gravitational acceleration and $M$ is the total mass of the system, consisting of the mass of the plates renormalized by the Casimir energy of each plate separately, plus the energy of the Casimir interaction between the plates. This reproduces the previous result in the limit as the coupling to the $δ$-function potential approaches infinity. Extension of this latter work to arbitrary orientation of the plates, and to general compact quantum vacuum energy configurations, is under development.

How does Casimir energy fall? II. Gravitational acceleration of quantum vacuum energy

It has been demonstrated that quantum vacuum energy gravitates according to the equivalence principle, at least for the finite Casimir energies associated with perfectly conducting parallel plates. We here add further support to this conclusion by considering parallel semitransparent plates, that is, delta-function potentials, acting on a massless scalar field, in a spacetime defined by Rindler coordinates (tau,x,y,xi). Fixed xi in such a spacetime represents uniform acceleration. We calculate the force on systems consisting of one or two such plates at fixed values of xi. In the limit of large Rindler coordinate xi (small acceleration), we recover (via the equivalence principle) the situation of weak gravity, and find that the gravitational force on the system is just Mg, where g is the gravitational acceleration and M is the total mass of the system, consisting of the mass of the plates renormalized by the Casimir energy of each plate separately, plus the energy of the Casimir interaction between the plates. This reproduces the previous result in the limit as the coupling to the delta-function potential approaches infinity.

Signatures of Heavy Z-prime in the Extra U(1) Superstring Inspired Model: RGEs Analysis

In the extra U(1) superstring inspired model, we examine the electroweak and U(1)-prime symmetry breaking with the singlet and exotic quark D, D+{\c}along with the study of heavy Z-prime boson in accordance with the top quark mass region. For this, we have done the analysis of complete renormalization group equations (RGEs)pertaining to the anomaly free E-{\6}-Eta model of rank 5. The Z-prime is found to the order of TeV or above with allowed small Z-Zprime mixing angle, for which the large singlet VEV is required. This is done by considering the only non-universality of Yukawa couplings at GUT scale because these do not obey the E-{\6}relationship and also satisfies the unitarity constraints both at GUT and weak scale, where rest of the parameters, i.e., gaugino masses, tri-linear couplings, and soft supersymmetric breaking masses are kept universal at GUT scale with the gauge couplings unification. The large value of Yukawa couplings (order of 1) triggered the symmetry breaking radiatively and induces the effective-Mu parameter at the electroweak scale and lead to a viable low energy spectrum at weak scale.

How Does Casimir Energy Fall?

Doubt continues to linger over the reality of quantum vacuum energy. There is some question whether fluctuating fields gravitate at all, or do so anomalously. Here we show that for the simple case of parallel conducting plates, the associated Casimir energy gravitates just as required by the equivalence principle, and that therefore the inertial and gravitational masses of a system possessing Casimir energy $E_c$ are both $E_c/c^2$. This simple result disproves recent claims in the literature. We clarify some pitfalls in the calculation that can lead to spurious dependences on coordinate system.

Bounds on the W-Boson Electric Dipole Moment -Revisited

Keeping in view the suggestion of Barr and Marciano [7] that the cut of procedure involves a good deal of uncertainity in the prediction of E.D.M. of W - boson, we have re-examined the earlier calculation by Marciano and Queijeiro [2] by replacing the Cut-off regularization process by BPHZ regularization[8]. This works in a clean and unambiguous manner without involving any approximation. We also examine apparently inapplicable approximations like using m(f) = m(f')in [2]. The bounds on lambda(w) and d(w) are significantly changed in all cases as compared with those reported in [2]. The necessary caution that is to be excercised while using approximations is explicitly pointed out. PACS number (s): 13.40. Em
