Utilizing frustration in Gd- and Yb-based oxides for milli-Kelvin adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration

The manifold of energetically degenerate configurations arising from competing interactions in frustrated magnets gives rise to an enhanced entropy at lowest temperatures, which can be utilized for adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR). We review structural and magnetic properties of various Yb- and Gd-based oxides featuring frustration related to different triangular moment configurations and (in some cases) structural randomness. In comparison to paramagnetic hydrated salts, which have traditionally been employed for mK-ADR, these novel ADR materials enable cooling to temperatures several times lower than the magnetic interaction strength, significantly enhancing the entropy density and cooling power at a given target temperature. A further advantage is their chemical stability, allowing for a much simpler ADR pill design and ultra-high vacuum applications. For the temperature range between 0.02 and 2 K, a systematic comparison of the field-induced entropy density change is provided, that illustrates the advantages of frustrated magnets for low-temperature ADR.

Pressure-induced phase transition in pyrochlore iridates (Sm$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($x =$ 0, 0.02, and 0.10): Raman and X-ray diffraction studies

The pyrochlore iridates, A$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, show a wide variety of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties controlled by the interplay of different exchange interactions, which can be tuned by external pressure. In this work, we report pressure-induced phase transitions at ambient temperature using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (up to ~ 20 GPa) and Raman-scattering measurements (up to ~ 25 GPa) of the pyrochlore series (Sm$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($x =$ 0, 0.02, and 0.10). Our Raman and X-ray data suggest an iso-structural transition in Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ at Pc ~ 11.2 GPa associated with the rearrangement of IrO6 octahedra in the pyrochlore lattice. The transition pressure decreases to ~ 10.2 and 9 GPa for $x =$ 0.02 and 0.10, respectively. For all the samples, the linewidth of three phonons associated with Ir-O-Ir (A1g and Eg) and Ir-O (T$_2$g$_4$) vibrations show anomalous decrease up to Pc, due to decrease in electron-phonon interaction.

Imaging the coherent propagation of collective modes in the excitonic insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ at room temperature

Excitonic insulators host a condensate of electron-hole pairs at equilibrium, giving rise to collective many-body effects. Although several materials have emerged as excitonic insulator candidates, evidence of long-range coherence is lacking and the origin of the ordered phase in these systems remains controversial. Here, using ultrafast pump-probe microscopy, we investigate the possible excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Below 328 K, we observe the anomalous micrometer-scale propagation of coherent modes at velocities of the order of $\sim10^5$ m/s, which we attribute to the hybridization between phonon modes and the phase mode of the condensate. We develop a theoretical framework to support this explanation and propose that electronic interactions provide a significant contribution to the ordered phase in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. These results allow us to understand how the condensate's collective modes transport energy and interact with other degrees of freedom. Our study provides a unique paradigm for the investigation and manipulation of these properties in strongly correlated materials.

Protracting the Weyl phase by a giant negative lattice expansion in Bi doped Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We show that the Weyl phase in $\rm Sm_2Ir_2O_7$ is protracted up to at least 2~\% alloying with Bi by an anomalous negative lattice expansion with $\rm Δa \sim- 0.01$Å. With further doping, the magnetic ordering disappears and electrical resistivity decreases by orders of magnitude; the resistivity upturn remains but with $\rm 1/T$ dependence of Weyl phase changed to $\rm -lnT$ dependence characteristic of the Quadratic Band Touching (QBT). At the Weyl-QBT phase boundary, a new phase is evidenced whose resistivity scales as $\rm -T^{1/4}$ possibly due to proximity to a quantum critical point proposed several years ago [Phys. Rev. X 4, 041027 (2014)], but whose experimental evidence has remained elusive thus far.

Role of spin-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in phonon renormalization of (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ across the metal-insulator phase transition: Temperature-dependent Raman and X-ray studies

We report temperature-dependent Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies of pyrochlore iridates, (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, for x=0, 0.02, 0.035, 0.05 and 0.1. The temperature variation in Raman experiments spans from 4 K to 300 K, covering the metal-insulator phase transition accompanied by paramagnetic to all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin ordering (T$_N$). These systems also show a Weyl semi-metal (WSM) phase at low temperatures (below ~50 K). We show that the Ir-O-Ir bond bending mode, A$_{1g}$ (510 cm$^{-1}$), shows anomalous softening in the magnetically ordered AIAO state, arising primarily from the spin-phonon interaction due to the phonon-modulation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin-exchange interaction. The two stretching modes, T$_{2g}^1$ (307 cm$^{-1}$) and T$_{2g}^2$ (382 cm$^{-1}$) harden significantly in the magnetic insulating phase. The T$_{2g}$ phonons also show anomalous temperature dependence of their mode frequencies, hitherto unreported, due to strong electron-phonon coupling. The signatures of the WSM state are observed in phonon renormalization below 50 K due to strong electron-phonon interaction. Our experimental results establish strong magneto-elastic coupling below T$_N$ and significant electron-phonon interactions in the metallic phase above T$_N$ as well as in the low-temperature WSM state.

Ultrafast melting and recovery of collective order in the excitonic insulator Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$

The layered chalcogenide Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ has been proposed to host an excitonic condensate in its ground state, a phase that could offer a unique platform to study and manipulate many-body states at room temperature. However, identifying the dominant microscopic contribution to the observed spontaneous symmetry breaking remains challenging, perpetuating the debate over the ground state properties. Here, using broadband ultrafast spectroscopy we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ and demonstrate that the transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is connected to the system's low-energy physics. We track the status of the ordered phase using this optical signature, establishing that high-fluence photoexcitations can suppress this order. From the sub-50 fs quenching timescale and the behaviour of the photoinduced coherent phonon modes, we conclude that electronic correlations provide a decisive contribution to the excitonic order formation. Our results pave the way towards the ultrafast control of an exciton condensate at room temperature.

Insulator-to-metal transition in the pyrochlore iridates series (Eu_1-xBi_x)2Ir2O7 probed using Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy

Eu2Ir2O7, a candidate Weyl semimetal, shows an insulator-to-metal transition as a function of Bi substitution at the Eu site. In this work, we investigate the (Eu_1-xBi_x)2Ir2O7 series via Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (HAXPES), where substitution of larger Bi3+ for Eu3+ is reported to result in an anomalous lattice contraction (20 %) for low Bi doping (3.5 %). Using HAXPES, we confirm that all the cations retain their nominal valence state throughout the series. The asymmetric nature of Bi core-level spectra for compositions in the metallic region indicates that Bi contributes to the density of states at the Fermi energy in this doping range. The valence band spectra shows that the Bi 6s peak is unaltered throughout the series and is situated deep within the valence band. based on these observations we argue that Bi 6p - Ir 5d hybridization drives the insulator-to-metal transition.

Monopole-limited nucleation of magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We present an in-depth analysis of muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under the effect of the Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$ isovalent and diamagnetic substitution as well as of external pressure. Our results evidence an anomalously slow increase of the magnetic volume fraction upon decreasing temperature only for stoichiometric Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, pointing towards highly unconventional properties of the magnetic phase developing therein. We argue that magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ develops based on the nucleation of magnetic droplets at $T_{N}$, whose successive growth is limited by the need of a continuous generation of magnetic hedgehog monopoles.

Anomalous lattice contraction and emergent electronic phases in Bi-doped Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We study the pyrochlore series (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ for $ 0 \leq x \leq 1$. We show that for small $x$, the lattice undergoes an anomalous contraction but the all-in/all-out and metal-to-insulator transitions remain robust, and the resistivity approaches a $1/T$ dependence at low-T, suggesting proximity to the Weyl semimetallic phase, as previously predicted theoretically. At the boundary between Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Bi$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ a qualitatively different ground state emerges, which is characterized by its unusual metallic behavior and absence of magnetic ordering at least down to $0.02$ K.

Dilute stuffing in the pyrochlore iridate $Eu_2Ir_2O_7$

The pyrochlore Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ has recently attracted significant attention as a candidate Weyl semimetal. The previous reports on this compound unanimously show a thermally induced metal to insulator (MI) transition, concomitant with antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range ordering of the Ir-moments below T$_\textit{N} \sim $120 K. However, there are contradictory reports concerning the slope d$ρ/$dT of the resistivity plots ($ρ$) in the "metallic" state above the metal-insulator (MI) transition, and the value of $ρ$ in the insulating state, both of which show significant sample dependence. Here, we explore this issue by investigating six different Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ samples with slightly varying Eu:Ir ratio. High-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction are done to probe minor variations in the cell parameters of the various Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ samples investigated here. Specific heat (C$ _p $) and magnetic susceptibility of all the samples showed long-range antiferromagnetic ordering upon cooling below T$ _\textit{N} \sim $120 K. The transitions are, however, found to be smeared out for the off-stoichiometric samples. We show that the sign of d$ρ/$dT above the metal-insulator (MI) transition is highly sensitive to the unit cell length, which, in turn, depends on the level of Eu-stuffing at the Ir-site. Samples with composition close to the ideal stoichiometry (Eu : Ir $ = $ 1) showed a change of sign of d$ρ/$dT from negative to positive upon cooling below a certain temperature T $^*$ $>$ T$_\textit{MI}$. With increasing Eu-stuffing T$ ^* $ decreased until a negative d$ρ/$dT persisted without any sign change down to T$_\textit{MI}$.
