Downlink Analysis of NOMA-enabled Cellular Networks with 3GPP-inspired User Ranking

This paper provides a comprehensive downlink analysis of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled cellular networks using tools from stochastic geometry. As a part of this analysis, we develop a novel 3GPP-inspired user ranking technique to construct a user cluster for the non-orthogonal transmission by grouping users from the cell center (CC) and cell edge (CE) regions. This technique allows to partition the users with distinct link qualities, which is imperative for harnessing NOMA performance gains. Our analysis is focused on the performance of a user cluster in the typical cell, which is significantly different from the standard stochastic geometry-based approach of analyzing the performance of the typical user. For this setting, we first derive the moments of the meta distributions for the CC and CE users under NOMA and orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Using this, we then derive the distributions of the transmission rates and mean packet delays under non-real time (NRT) and real-time (RT) service models, respectively, for both CC and CE users. Finally, we study two resource allocation (RA) techniques with the objective of maximizing the cell sum rate (CSR) under NRT service, and the sum effective capacity (SEC) under RT service. In addition to providing several useful design insights, our results demonstrate that NOMA provides improved rate region and higher CSR as compared to OMA. In addition, we also show that NOMA provides better SEC as compared to OMA for the higher user density.

Distance from the Nucleus to a Uniformly Random Point in the 0-cell and the Typical Cell of the Poisson-Voronoi Tessellation

Consider the distances $\tilde{R}_o$ and $R_o$ from the nucleus to a uniformly random point in the 0-cell and the typical cell, respectively, of the $d$-dimensional Poisson-Voronoi (PV) tessellation. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the exact distributions of $\tilde{R}_o$ and $R_o$. First, using the well-known relationship between the 0-cell and the typical cell, we show that the random variable $\tilde{R}_o$ is equivalent in distribution to the contact distance of the Poisson point process. Next, we derive a multi-integral expression for the exact distribution of $R_o$. Further, we derive a closed-form approximate expression for the distribution of $R_o$, which is the contact distribution with a mean corrected by a factor equal to the ratio of the mean volumes of the 0-cell and the typical cell. An additional outcome of our analysis is a direct proof of the well-known spherical property of the PV cells having a large inball.

Downlink Analysis for the Typical Cell in Poisson Cellular Networks

Owing to its unparalleled tractability, the Poisson point process (PPP) has emerged as a popular model for the analysis of cellular networks. Considering a stationary point process of users, which is independent of the base station (BS) point process, it is well known that the typical user does not lie in the typical cell and thus it may not truly represent the typical cell performance. Inspired by this observation, we present a construction that allows a direct characterization of the downlink performance of the typical cell. For this, we present an exact downlink analysis for the 1-D case and a remarkably accurate approximation for the 2-D case. Several useful insights about the differences and similarities in the two viewpoints (typical user vs. typical cell) are also provided.

Meta Distribution for Downlink NOMA in Cellular Networks with 3GPP-inspired User Ranking

This paper presents the meta distribution analysis of the downlink two-user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in cellular networks. We propose a novel user ranking technique wherein the users from the cell center (CC) and cell edge (CE) regions are paired for the non-orthogonal transmission. Inspired by how users are partitioned in 3GPP cellular models, the CC and CE users are characterized based on the mean powers received from the serving and the dominant interfering BSs. We demonstrate that the proposed technique ranks users in an accurate order with distinct link qualities, which is imperative for the performance of NOMA system. The exact moments of the meta distributions for the CC and CE users under NOMA and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) are derived. In addition, we provide tight beta distribution approximations for the meta distributions and exact expressions of the mean local delays and the cell throughputs for the NOMA and OMA cases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive analysis of NOMA using stochastic geometry with 3GPP-inspired user ranking scheme that depends upon both of the link qualities from the serving and dominant interfering BSs.

Analysis of Transmission Rate of Wireless Networks under the Broadcast Approach with Continuum of Transmission Layers

In this letter, we characterize the performance of broadcast approach with continuum of transmission layers in random wireless networks where the channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be known only at the receiver. By modeling the transmitter-receiver pairs using bipolar Poisson point process, we derive analytical expressions for the mean and variance of achievable transmission rate and the network transmission capacity under broadcast approach. Our analysis shows that the broadcast approach provides better mean transmission rate with lower variance compared to outage strategy.

Load-aware Performance Analysis of Cell Center/Edge Users in Random HetNets

For real-time traffic, the link quality and call blocking probability (both derived from coverage probability) are realized to be poor for cell edge users (CEUs) compared to cell center users (CCUs) as the signal reception in the cell center region is better compared to the cell edge region. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the uncoordinated channel access by different types of base stations determine the interference statistics that further arbitrates the coverage probability. Thus, the spectrum allocation techniques have major impact on the performance of CCU and CEU. In this paper, the performance of CCUs and CEUs in a random two-tier network is studied for two spectrum allocation techniques namely: 1) co-channel (CSA), and 2) shared (SSA). For performance analysis, the widely accepted conception of modeling the tiers of HetNet using independent homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) is considered to accommodate the spatial randomness in location of BSs. To incorporate the spatial randomness in the arrival of service and to aid the load-aware analysis, the cellular traffic is modeled using spatio-temporal PPP. Under this scenario, we have developed an analytical framework to evaluate the load-aware performance, including coverage and blocking probabilities, of CCUs and CEUs under both spectrum allocation techniques. Further, we provide insight into achievable area energy efficiency for SSA and CSA. The developed analytical framework is validated through extensive simulations. Next, we demonstrate the impact of traffic load and femto access points density on the performance of CCUs/CEUs under CSA and SSA.

Coverage Analysis of Two-Tier HetNets for Co-Channel, Orthogonal, and Partial Spectrum Sharing under Fractional Load Conditions

In heterogeneous networks, the random deployment of femto access points (FAPs) and macro base stations (MBSs) with uncoordinated channel access impose huge inter-tier interferences. In real-life networks, the process of MBSs deployment exhibits the homogeneity, however the FAPs have the behavioral characteristic of clusters formation like in malls, apartments, offices, etc. Therefore, the composite modeling of the MBSs and the FAPs using Poisson point process and Poisson cluster process is employed for the evaluation of coverage probability. The scenario of the real-time traffic for macro-tier and the best-effort traffic for femto-tier is considered. Cognition is introduced in the clustered FAPs to control the inter-tier interference. Furthermore, the impact of macro-tier load is analyzed by exploiting the inherent coupling between coverage probability and activity factor of an MBS. Further, we study the effect of co-channel, orthogonal, and partial spectrum sharing modes on the coverage for given parameters like load condition, FAPs/MBSs density, etc. We provide simulation validation for the derived expressions of coverage and present an comparative analysis for the mentioned spectrum sharing modes.
