Yang-Baxter solutions from commuting operators

We construct $R$-matrices (with a multidimensional spectral parameter) that include additive as well as non-additive parameters. They satisfy the colored Yang-Baxter equation. The solutions depend on a set of commuting operators. They change with the representation of the latter. The associated Yang-Baxter algebra and the spectrum of the transfer matrix are also studied.

Disorder-free localisation in continuous-time quantum walks : Role of symmetries

We investigate the phenomenon of disorder-free localisation in quantum systems with global permutation symmetry. We use permutation group theory to systematically construct permutation symmetric many-fermion Hamiltonians and interpret them as generators of continuous-time quantum walks. When the number of fermions is very large we find that all the canonical basis states localise at all times, without the introduction of any disorder coefficients. This time-independent localisation is not the result of any emergent disorder distinguishing it from existing mechanisms for disorder-free localisation. Next we establish the conditions under which the localisation is preserved. We find that interactions that preserve and break the global permutation symmetry sustains localisation. Furthermore the basis states of systems with reduced permutation symmetry, localise even for a small number of fermions when the symmetry-reducing parameters are tuned accordingly. We show that similar localisation also occurs for a permutation symmetric Heisenberg spin chain and permutation symmetric bosonic systems, implying that the localisation is independent of the superselected symmetry. Finally we make connections of the Hamiltonians studied here to the adjacency matrices of graphs and use this to propose a prescription for disorder-free localisation in continuous-time quantum walk systems. Many of the models proposed here feature all-to-all connectivity and can be potentially realised on superconducting quantum circuits, trapped ion systems and ultracold atoms.

Dyck Paths and Topological Quantum Computation

The fusion basis of Fibonacci anyons supports unitary braid representations that can be utilized for universal quantum computation. We show a mapping between the fusion basis of three Fibonacci anyons, $\{|1\rangle, |τ\rangle\}$, and the two length 4 Dyck paths via an isomorphism between the two dimensional braid group representations on the fusion basis and the braid group representation built on the standard $(2,2)$ Young diagrams using the Jones construction. This correspondence helps us construct the fusion basis of the Fibonacci anyons using Dyck paths as the number of standard $(N,N)$ Young tableaux is the Catalan number, $C_N$ . We then use the local Fredkin moves to construct a spin chain that contains precisely those Dyck paths that correspond to the Fibonacci fusion basis, as a degenerate set. We show that the system is gapped and examine its stability to random noise thereby establishing its usefulness as a platform for topological quantum computation. Finally, we show braidwords in this rotated space that efficiently enable the execution of any desired single-qubit operation, achieving the desired level of precision($\sim 10^{-3}$).

Loop braid groups and integrable models

Loop braid groups characterize the exchange of extended objects, namely loops, in three dimensional space generalizing the notion of braid groups that describe the exchange of point particles in two dimensional space. Their interest in physics stems from the fact that they capture anyonic statistics in three dimensions which is otherwise known to only exist for point particles on the plane. Here we explore another direction where the algebraic relations of the loop braid groups can play a role -- quantum integrable models. We show that the {\it symmetric loop braid group} can naturally give rise to solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation, proving the integrability of certain models through the RTT relation. For certain representations of the symmetric loop braid group we obtain integrable deformations of the $XXX$-, $XXZ$- and $XYZ$-spin chains.

Topological Quantum Computation on Supersymmetric Spin Chains

Quantum gates built out of braid group elements form the building blocks of topological quantum computation. They have been extensively studied in $SU(2)_k$ quantum group theories, a rich source of examples of non-Abelian anyons such as the Ising ($k=2$), Fibonacci ($k=3$) and Jones-Kauffman ($k=4$) anyons. We show that the fusion spaces of these anyonic systems can be precisely mapped to the product state zero modes of certain Nicolai-like supersymmetric spin chains. As a result, we can realize the braid group on the product state zero modes of these supersymmetric systems. These operators kill all the other states in the Hilbert space, thus preventing the occurrence of errors while processing information, making them suitable for quantum computing.

Groupoid Toric Codes

The toric code can be constructed as a gauge theory of finite groups on oriented two dimensional lattices. Here we construct analogous models with the gauge fields belonging to groupoids, which are categories where every morphism has an inverse. We show that a consistent system can be constructed for an arbitrary groupoid and analyze the simplest example that can be seen as the analog of the Abelian $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code. We find several exactly solvable models that have fracton-like features which include an extensive ground state degeneracy and excitations that are either immobile or have restricted mobility. Among the possibilities we study in detail the one where the ground state degeneracy scales as $2\times 2^{N_v}$, where $N_v$ is the number of vertices in the lattice. The origin of this degeneracy can be traced to loop operators supported on both contractible and non-contractible loops. In particular, different non-contractible loops, along the same direction on a torus, result in different ground states. This is an exponential increase in the number of logical qubits that can be encoded in this code. Moreover the face excitations in this system are deconfined, free to move without an energy cost along certain directions of the lattice, whereas in certain other directions their movement incurs an energy cost. This places a restriction on the types of loop operators that contribute to the ground state degeneracy. The vertex excitations are immobile. The results are also extended to the groupoid analogs of Abelian $\mathbb{Z}_N$ toric codes.

Non-CSS color codes on 2D lattices : Models and Topological Properties

The two-dimensional color code is an alternative to the toric code that encodes more logical qubits while maintaining crucial features of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code in the long wavelength limit. However its short range physics include single qubit Pauli operations that violate either three or six stabilisers as opposed to the toric code where single qubit Pauli operations violate two or four stabilisers. Exploiting this fact we construct several non-CSS versions of the two-dimensional color code falling into two families - those where either three, four or five stabilisers are violated and those which violate exactly four stabilisers for all the three types of single qubit Pauli operations. These models are not equivalent to the original color code by a local unitary transformation. Nevertheless the code spaces of the CSS and non-CSS versions are related by local unitaries which reflects the fact that their long range physics coincide. This also implies that the non-CSS versions host transversal Clifford gates and hence support fault-tolerant computations. As a consequence of the non-CSS structure, the logical operators are of a mixed type which in some cases include all the three Pauli operators making them potentially useful for protection against biased Pauli noise.

Novel quantum phases on graphs using abelian gauge theory

Graphs are topological spaces that include broader objects than discretized manifolds, making them interesting playgrounds for the study of quantum phases not realized by symmetry breaking. In particular they are known to support anyons of an even richer variety than the two-dimensional space. We explore this possibility by building a class of frustration-free and gapped Hamiltonians based on discrete abelian gauge groups. The resulting models have a ground state degeneracy that can be either a topological invariant, an extensive quantity or a mixture of the two. For two basis of the degenerate ground states which are complementary in quantum theory, the entanglement entropy is exactly computed. The result for one basis has a constant global term, known as the topological entanglement entropy, implying long-range entanglement. On the other hand, the topological entanglement entropy vanishes in the result for the other basis. Comparisons are made with similar occurrences in the toric code. We analyze excitations and identify anyon-like excitations that account for the topological entanglement entropy. An analogy between the ground states of this system and the $θ$-vacuum for a $U(1)$ gauge theory on a circle is also drawn.

Frustration-free Hamiltonian with Topological Order on Graphs

It is commonly believed that models defined on a closed one-dimensional manifold cannot give rise to topological order. Here we construct frustration-free Hamiltonians which possess both symmetry protected topological order (SPT) on the open chain {\it and} multiple ground state degeneracy (GSD) that is unrelated to global symmetry breaking on the closed chain. Instead of global symmetry breaking, there exists a {\it local} symmetry operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian and connects the multiple ground states, reminiscent of how the topologically distinct ground states of the toric code are connected by various winding operators. Our model solved on an open chain demonstrates symmetry fractionalization as an indication of SPT order and on a general graph the GSD can be shown to scale with the first Betti number - a topological invariant that counts the number of independent cycles or one dimensional holes of the graph.

Local invariants of braiding quantum gates -- associated link polynomials and entangling power

For a generic $n$-qubit system, local invariants under the action of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})^{\otimes n}$ characterize non-local properties of entanglement. In general, such properties are not immediately apparent and hard to construct. Here we consider certain two-qubit Yang-Baxter operators, which we dub of the `X-type', and show that their eigenvalues completely determine the non-local properties of the system. Moreover, we apply the Turaev procedure to these operators and obtain their associated link/knot polynomials. We also compute their entangling power and compare it with that of a generic two-qubit operator.

Generating W states with braiding operators

Braiding operators can be used to create entangled states out of product states, thus establishing a correspondence between topological and quantum entanglement. This is well-known for maximally entangled Bell and GHZ states and their equivalent states under Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication, but so far a similar result for W states was missing. Here we use generators of extraspecial 2-groups to obtain the W state in a four-qubit space and partition algebras to generate the W state in a three-qubit space. We also present a unitary generalized Yang-Baxter operator that embeds the W$_n$ state in a $(2n-1)$-qubit space.

Matrix Product Wave Function of the Ground State and Elementary Excitation in the Spin-1/2 Chain

We present a variational matrix product state (vMPS) for the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. The MPS effectively organizes the various dimer configurations, in faithful reflection of the resonating valence bond (RVB) picture of the spin liquid, with the energy only 0.024% higher than the exact value given by Bethe ansatz. Building on the ground-state vMPS, the one-spin wave function is constructed in a simple manner with the dispersion that matches well with the exact spectrum. The vMPS scheme is applied to the family of Hamiltonian extrapolating between the Heisenberg model and the Majumdar-Ghosh model.

Braiding quantum gates from partition algebras

Unitary braiding operators can be used as robust entangling quantum gates. We introduce a solution-generating technique to solve the $(d,m,l)$-generalized Yang-Baxter equation, for $m/2\leq l \leq m$, which allows to systematically construct such braiding operators. This is achieved by using partition algebras, a generalization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra encountered in statistical mechanics. We obtain families of unitary and non-unitary braiding operators that generate the full braid group. Explicit examples are given for a 2-, 3-, and 4-qubit system, including the classification of the entangled states generated by these operators based on Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication.

Quantum entanglement, supersymmetry, and the generalized Yang-Baxter equation

Entangled states, such as the Bell and GHZ states, are generated from separable states using matrices known to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation and its generalization. This remarkable fact hints at the possibility of using braiding operators as quantum entanglers, and is part of a larger speculated connection between topological and quantum entanglement. We push the analysis of this connection forward, by showing that supersymmetry algebras can be used to construct large families of solutions of the spectral parameter-dependent generalized Yang-Baxter equation. We present a number of explicit examples and outline a general algorithm for arbitrary numbers of qubits. The operators we obtain produce, in turn, all the entangled states in a multi-qubit system classified by the Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication protocol introduced in quantum information theory.

Parity anomaly laser

We propose a novel supersymmetry-inspired scheme for achieving robust single mode lasing in arrays of coupled microcavities, based on factorizing a given array Hamiltonian into its "supercharge" partner array. Pumping a single sublattice of the partner array preferentially induces lasing of an unpaired zero mode. A chiral symmetry protects the zero mode similar to 1D topological arrays, but it need not be localized to domain walls or edges. We demonstrate single mode lasing over a wider parameter regime by designing the zero mode to have a uniform intensity profile.

Many-body localization in large-N conformal mechanics

In quantum statistical mechanics, closed many-body systems that do not exhibit thermalization after an arbitrarily long time in spite of the presence of interactions are called as many-body localized systems, and recently have been vigorously investigated. After a brief review of this topic, we consider a many-body interacting quantum system in one dimension, which has conformal symmetry and integrability. We exactly solve the system and discuss its thermal or non-thermal behavior.

Non-Interacting Motzkin Chain - Periodic Boundary Conditions

The Motzkin spin chain is a spin-1 model introduced in \cite{shor} as an example of a system exhibiting a high degree of quantum fluctuations whose ground state can be mapped to Motzkin paths that are generated with local equivalence moves. This model is difficult to solve in general but keeping just the height preserving local equivalence moves we show that the model becomes integrable which when projected to certain subspaces of the full Hilbert space is isomorphic to the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX chain. In fact in the full Hilbert space the system is akin to two non-interacting spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX chains making the spectrum the same as the latter with the change coming in the degeneracy of the states. We then show that including the height-changing local-equivalence move is the same as introducing interactions in the above system.

Quantum Phase Transitions and Localization in Semigroup Fredkin Spin Chain

We construct an extended quantum spin chain model by introducing new degrees of freedom to the Fredkin spin chain. The new degrees of freedom called arrow indices are partly associated to the symmetric inverse semigroup $\cS^3_1$. Ground states of the model fall into three different phases, and quantum phase transition takes place at each phase boundary. One of the phases exhibits logarithmic violation of the area law of entanglement entropy and quantum criticality, whereas the other two obey the area law. As an interesting feature arising by the extension, there are excited states due to disconnections with respect to the arrow indices. We show that these states are localized without disorder.
