Strongly-Correlated Thermoelectric Transport beyond Linear Response

We investigate nonlinear thermoelectric transport through quantum impurity systems with strong on-site interactions. We show that the steady-state transport through interacting quantum impurities in contact with electron reservoirs at significantly different temperatures can be captured by an effective-equilibrium density matrix, expressed compactly in terms of the Lippmann-Schwinger operators of the system. In addition, the reservoirs can be maintained at arbitrary chemical potentials. The interplay between the temperature gradient and bias voltage gives rise to a non-trivial breaking of particle-hole symmetry in the strongly correlated regime, manifest in the Abrikosov-Suhl localized electron resonance. This purely many-body effect, which is in agreement with experimental results, is beyond the purview of mean-field arguments.

Strongly correlated dynamics in multichannel quantum RC circuits

We examine dissipation effects in a multichannel quantum RC circuit, comprising a cavity or single-electron box capacitively coupled to a gate and connected to a reservoir lead via several conducting channels. Depending on the engineering details of the quantum RC circuit, the number of channels contributing to transport vary, as do the form of the interchannel couplings. For low-frequency AC transport, the charge-relaxation resistance ($R_{q}$) is a nontrivial function of the parameters of the system. However, in the vicinity of the charge degeneracy points and for weak tunneling, we find as a result of cross-mode mixing or channel asymmetry that $R_q$ becomes universal for a metallic cavity at low temperatures, and equals the unit of quantum resistance. To prove this universality we map the system to an effective one-channel Kondo model, and construct an analogy with the Coulomb gas. Next, we probe the opposite regime of near-perfect transmission using a bosonization approach. Focussing on the two-channel case, we study the effect of backscattering at the lead-dot interface, more specifically, the role of an asymmetry in the backscattering amplitudes, and make a connection with the weak tunneling regime near the charge degeneracy points.

Effective Equilibrium Description of Nonequilibrium Quantum Transport I: Fundamentals and Methodology

The theoretical description of strongly correlated quantum systems out of equilibrium presents several challenges and a number of open questions persist. In this paper we focus on nonlinear electronic transport through a quantum dot maintained at finite bias using a concept introduced by Hershfield [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2134 (1993)] whereby one can express such nonequilibrium quantum impurity models in terms of the system's Lippmann-Schwinger operators. These scattering operators allow one to reformulate the nonequilibrium problem as an effective equilibrium problem associated with a modified Hamiltonian, thus facilitating the implementation of equilibrium many-body techniques. We provide an alternative derivation of the effective Hamiltonian of Hershfield using the concept of an "open system". Furthermore, we demonstrate the equivalence between observables computed using the Schwinger-Keldysh framework and the effective equilibrium approach. For the study of transport, the non-equilibrium spectral function of the dot is identified as the quantity of principal interest and we derive general expressions for the current (the Meir-Wingreen formula) and the charge occupation of the dot. We introduce a finite temperature formalism which is used as a tool for computing real time Green's functions. In a companion paper we elucidate a generic scheme for perturbative calculations of interacting models, with particular reference to the Anderson model.

Variational wavefunction study of the triangular lattice supersolid

We present a variational wavefunction which explains the behaviour of the supersolid state formed by hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice. The wavefunction is a linear superposition of {\em only and all} configurations minimising the repulsion between the bosons (which it thus implements as a hard constraint). Its properties can be evaluated exactly--in particular, the variational minimisation of the energy yields (i) the surprising and initially controversial spontaneous density deviation from half-filling (ii) a quantitatively accurate estimate of the corresponding density wave (solid) order parameter.
