Constraining heavy quark energy loss using $B$ and $D$ meson measurements in heavy ion collision at RHIC and LHC energies

In this work, we calculate energy loss of heavy quark (charm and bottom) due to elastic collisions and gluon radiation in hot/dense medium. The collisional energy loss has been obtained using QCD calculations. The radiative energy loss is calculated using reaction operator formalism and generalized dead cone approach. We rederive the energy loss expression using same assumptions as generalized dead cone approach but obtain slightly different results. We also improve the model employed to calculate path length and the system evolution. The nuclear modification factors $R_{AA}$ including shadowing and energy loss are evaluated for $B$ and $D$ mesons and are compared with the measurements in PbPb collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and with the D meson and Heavy flavour (HF) electrons measurements in AuAu collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The radiative energy loss calculated by reaction operator formalism added with collisional energy loss describes the RHIC HF electron suppression in high $p_{T}$ range. It also describes the LHC measurement of $B$ meson suppression but overestimates the suppression of $D$ meson. The radiative energy loss from generalized dead cone approach describes the charm suppression at both RHIC as well as LHC energies and requires energy loss due to collisions to be added in order to describe the bottom suppression at LHC.

Quarkonia suppression in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

We estimate the modification of quarkonia yields due to different processes in the medium produced in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy. The quarkonia and heavy flavour cross sections calculated up to next-to-leading order (NLO) are used in the study. Shadowing corrections are obtained with the NLO EPS09 parametrization. A kinetic model is employed which incorporates quarkonia suppression inside a QGP, suppression due to hadronic comovers, and regeneration from charm pairs. The quarkonia dissociation cross section due to gluon collisions has been considered and the regeneration rate has been obtained using the principle of detailed balance. The modification in quarkonia yields due to collisions with hadronic comovers has been estimated assuming that the comovers are pions. The manifestations of these effects on the nuclear modification factors for both $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ in different kinematic regions has been demonstrated for Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV in comparison with the measurements. Both the suppression and regeneration due to a deconfined medium strongly affect the low and intermediate $p_T$ range. The large observed suppression of $J/ψ$ at $p_T~>$ 10 GeV/$c$ exceeds the estimates of suppression by gluon dissociation.

Inferring freeze-out parameters from pion measurements at RHIC and LHC

We analyze the transverse momentum spectra of charged pions measured in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV using the Tsallis distribution modified to include transverse flow. All the spectra are well described by the modified Tsallis distribution in an extended transverse momentum range upto 6 GeV/$c$. The kinetic freeze-out temperature ($T$), average transverse flow ($β$) and degree of non thermalization ($q$) are obtained as a function of system size for both the energies. With increasing system size $β$ shows increasing trend whereas $T$ remains constant. While the systems at RHIC and LHC energies show similar $β$ and $q$, the parameter $T$ is higher at LHC as compared to RHIC. The kinetic freeze-out temperature is also extracted using the measured charged particle multiplicity and HBT volume of the system as a function of system size and collision energies.

Suppression of bottomonia states in finite size quark gluon plasma in PbPb collisions at Large Hadron Collider

The bottomonium states due to their varying binding energies dissolve at different temperatures and thus their nuclear modification factors and relative yields have potential to map the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). We estimate the suppression of bottomonia states due to color screening in an expanding QGP of finite lifetime and size with the conditions relevant for PbPb collisions at LHC. The properties of $Υ$ states and recent results on their dissociation temperatures have been used as ingredient in the study. The nuclear modification factors and the ratios of yields of $Υ$ states are then obtained as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. We compare our theoretical calculations with the bottomonia yields measured with CMS in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. The model calculations explain the data very well.

The Theory of Crowd Capital

We are seeing more and more organizations undertaking activities to engage dispersed populations through IS. Using the knowledge-based view of the organization, this work conceptualizes a theory of Crowd Capital to explain this phenomenon. Crowd Capital is a heterogeneous knowledge resource generated by an organization, through its use of Crowd Capability, which is defined by the structure, content, and process by which an organization engages with the dispersed knowledge of individuals (the Crowd). Our work draws upon a diverse literature and builds upon numerous examples of practitioner implementations to support our theorizing. We present a model of Crowd Capital generation in organizations and discuss the implications of Crowd Capital on organizational boundary and on IS research.

The Glauber model and the heavy ion reaction cross section

We reexamine the Glauber model and calculate the total reaction cross section as a function of energy in the low and intermediate energy range, where many of the corrections in the model, are effective. The most significant effect in this energy range is by the modification of the trajectory due to the Coulomb field. The modification in the trajectory due to nuclear field is also taken into account in a self consistent way. The energy ranges in which particular corrections are effective, are quantified and it is found that when the center of mass energy of the system becomes 30 times the Coulomb barrier, none of the trajectory modification to the Glauber model is really required. The reaction cross sections for light and heavy systems, right from near coulomb barrier to intermediate energies have been calculated. The exact nuclear densities and free nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections have been used in the calculations. The center of mass correction which is important for light systems, has also been taken into account. There is an excellent agreement between the calculations with the modified Glauber model and the experimental data. This suggests that the heavy ion reactions in this energy range can be explained by the Glauber model in terms of free NN cross sections without incorporating any medium modification.
