Localised Horizons and Holographic Thermodynamics: Supercooling in the 1/D Expansion

In holography, four-dimensional confining gauge theories are often modelled by five-dimensional Einstein--scalar gravity by choosing a specific form of the scalar potential. In a large class of non-conformal theories, we show that a predictive structure emerges for the thermal confinement transition by generalising the gravitational dual to $D+1$ dimensions and using a $1/D$ expansion. These results are independent of the details of the scalar potential, hinting towards universality. The black brane geometry dual to the deconfined phase can be analytically constructed due to its effects being localised near the horizon at leading order. The solution does not exist below a minimal temperature $T_{\rm min}$ and the maximum possible supercooling in the transition $\epsilon_{\rm sc} = 1-T_{\rm min}/T_{\rm c}$ is generically suppressed by a factor of $1/D^2$. Remarkably, the maximum supercooling at the leading order is set by the speed of sound in the deconfined phase of the gauge theory at the critical temperature, $\epsilon_{\rm sc}=c_s^2(T_{\rm c})/2$. These predictions agree with explicit calculations in an exponential superpotential, improved holography, and the thermal transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang--Mills on a sphere.

Axion couplings in Orbifold GUTs

We consider the coupling of axions to gauge bosons in higher-dimensional Grand Unified Theories (GUT) inspired by string theory constructions with D-branes on orbifold singularities, the so-called orbifold GUTs. Due to their topological properties, axion couplings to gauge bosons are independent of the gauge symmetry reduction mechanism and the background geometry -- they only depend on the embedding of the SM into the UV gauge group. There are two kinds of axions in this class of theories: axions coming from gauge fields in the bulk and axions localised on the boundaries. The axion-photon coupling for the bulk axions coincide with the results from 4-dimensional GUTs, where axions which couple to photons necessarily couple also to QCD. The brane-localised axions can couple to photons independently of the QCD coupling, but if gauge couplings are approximately unified, the axions get large masses from unsuppressed instantons on the boundaries. This means that the ratio $g_{a\gamma\gamma}/m_a$ is below (or equal to) the QCD axion value for all axions in orbifold GUTs, as is the case for unified theories in 4d.

Axion Quality Problem: Keep Calm and Baryon

Axion models generically suffer from a severe quality problem when coupled to gravity. In this article we provide a very simple model with a high quality axion. The axion is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the baryon number symmetry, $U(1)_B$, of a new composite sector that breaks $U(1)_B$ spontaneously when it confines. A controlled example is a supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with $N_c = N_f$. The axion shift symmetry is automatically protected due to the high dimension of the gauge-invariant baryon operator, with the Peccei-Quinn breaking operators arising at dimension $N_c+2$. The standard model gauge group is embedded as a subgroup of the flavor symmetry group of SQCD that has an anomaly with $U(1)_B$, generating the standard coupling with gluons.

Supercooled Confinement

We study general properties of confinement phase transitions in the early universe. An observable gravitational wave signal from such transitions requires significant supercooling. However, in almost all understood examples of confining gauge theories the degree of supercooling is too small to give interesting gravitational wave signals. We review and highlight the evidence why supercooling is not generic in confining gauge theories. The exceptions are Randall-Sundrum models which define a strongly coupled gauge theory holographically by a 5D gravitational theory. We construct a simple illustrative model of a 4D gauge theory inspired by features of the Randall-Sundrum model. It is a large-$N$ gauge theory in the conformal window coupled to a weakly coupled scalar field which undergoes a supercooled phase transition that breaks the conformal symmetry and triggers confinement. We show that there are interesting features in the gravitational wave spectra that can carry the imprint of the confining gauge theory.

Prediction for Maximum Supercooling in SU(N) Confinement Transition

The thermal confinement phase transition (PT) in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory is first-order for $N\geq 3$, with bounce action scaling as $N^2$. Remarkably, lattice data for the action include a small coefficient whose presence likely strongly alters the PT dynamics. We give evidence, utilizing insights from softly-broken SUSY YM models, that the small coefficient originates from a deconfined phase instability just below the critical temperature. We predict the maximum achievable supercooling in $SU(N)$ theories to be a few percent, which can be tested on the lattice. We briefly discuss the potentially significant suppression of the associated cosmological gravitational wave signals.

Axion Couplings in Heterotic String Theory

We study the coupling of axions to gauge bosons in heterotic string theory. The axion-gauge boson couplings in the low energy 4d theory are derived by matching mixed anomalies between higher-form global symmetries and the zero-form gauge symmetry in the 10d theory. When the standard model gauge group is embedded in a single simple group in the 10d theory -- as is the case for almost all heterotic models studied in the literature -- the ratio of the axion-photon coupling to the axion mass is bounded above by the QCD line. This bound is relevant for a large number of axion searches which have sensitivity to axion parameter space above this line. The discovery of an axion in these searches will rule out a large class of heterotic models, making such a signal challenging to explain within heterotic string theory.

Searching for axion forces with spin precession in atoms and molecules

We propose to use atoms and molecules as quantum sensors of axion-mediated monopole-dipole forces. We show that electron spin precession experiments using atomic and molecular beams are well-suited for axion searches thanks to the presence of co-magnetometer states and single-shot temporal resolution. Experimental strategies to detect axion gradients from localised sources and the earth are presented, taking ACME III as a prototype example. Other possibilities including atomic beams, and laser-cooled atoms and molecules are discussed.

Electroweak Phase Transition with a Double Well Done Doubly Well

We revisit the electroweak phase transition in the scalar singlet extension of the standard model with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In significant parts of the parameter space the phase transition occurs in two steps - including canonical benchmarks used in experimental projections for gravitational waves. Domain walls produced in the first step of the transition seed the final step to the electroweak vacuum, an effect which is typically neglected but leads to an exponentially enhanced tunnelling rate. We improve previous results obtained for the seeded transition, which made use of the thin-wall or high temperature approximations, by using the mountain pass algorithm that was recently proposed as a useful tool for seeded processes. We then determine the predictions of the seeded transition for the latent heat, bubble size and characteristic time scale of the transition. Differences compared to homogeneous transitions are most pronounced when there are relatively few domain walls per hubble patch, potentially leading to an enhanced gravitational wave signal. We also provide a derivation of the percolation criteria for a generic seeded transition, which applies to the domain wall seeds we consider as well as to strings and monopoles.

The Monodromic Axion-Photon Coupling

We consider the general form of the axion coupling to photons in the axion-Maxwell theory. On general grounds this coupling takes the form of a monodromic function of the axion, which we call $g(a)$, multiplying the Chern-Pontryagin density $F \widetilde{F}$ of the photon. We show that the non-linearity of $g(a)$ is a spurion for the shift symmetry of the axion. In this context, when $g(a) \neq \mathbb{Z}a$, the linearized coupling of the axion $g'(a)$ is not quantized and there is a correlated mass term for the axion. Singularities in $g(a)$ due to the fast rearrangement of degrees of freedom are shown to have corresponding cusps and singularities in the axion potential. We derive the general form of $g(a)$ for the QCD axion, axions with perturbatively broken shift symmetries and axions descending from extra dimensions. In all cases, we show that there is a uniform general form of the monodromic function $g(a)$ and it is connected to the axion potential.

Rock 'n' Roll Solutions to the Hubble Tension

Local measurements of the Hubble parameter are increasingly in tension with the value inferred from a $Λ$CDM fit to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. In this paper, we construct scenarios in which evolving scalar fields significantly ease this tension by adding energy to the Universe around recombination in a narrow redshift window. We identify solutions with scalar field potential $V \propto ϕ^{2n}$ that have simple asymptotic behavior, both oscillatory (rocking) and rolling. These solutions consistently describe both the field evolution and its fluctuations without approximation. Our findings differ qualitatively from some of the existing literature, which rely upon a coarse-grained fluid description. Combining CMB data with low-redshift measurements, the best fit model has $n=2$ with a significantly higher value of the Hubble constant as compared to a $Λ$CDM fit to the same data. Future measurements of the late-time amplitude of matter fluctuations and of the reionization history could help distinguish these models from competing solutions.

Flavoured $(g-2)_μ$ with Dark Lepton Seasoning

As a joint explanation for the dark matter (DM) problem and the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly, we propose a simplified model of lepton-flavoured complex scalar DM with couplings to both the left- and right-handed leptons of the Standard Model (SM). Both interactions are governed by the same new flavour-violating coupling matrix $λ$, however we allow for a relative scaling of the coupling strength. The SM is further extended by two fermion representations, transforming as an $SU(2)_L$ doublet and singlet, respectively, and mediating these interactions. The fermions additionally couple to the SM Higgs doublet via a new Yukawa coupling. To study the model's phenomenology we first investigate constraints from collider searches, flavour experiments, precision tests of the SM, the DM relic density, and direct as well as indirect detection experiments individually. We then perform a combined analysis by demanding that all mentioned constraints are satisfied simultaneously. We use the results of this combined analysis and examine if the model is capable of accommodating the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly within its viable parameter space without introducing fine-tuned lepton masses. For all benchmark scenarios we consider, we find that the central value of $Δa_μ^\text{exp}$ can be reached without generating too large corrections to the lepton masses. We hence conclude that this model qualifies as a viable and attractive lepton-flavoured DM model that at the same time solves the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly.

Searching for axion forces with precision precession in storage rings

We consider different types of storage rings as precision probes of axion-mediated monopole-dipole forces. We show that current and planned experiments aiming to measure magnetic and electric dipole moments of protons, muons and electrons very precisely may explore new parts of the parameter space beyond existing laboratory bounds and, in some cases, beyond astrophysical constraints. Remarkably, a light axion coupled to muons may explain the FNAL/BNL $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly as an environmental effect -- the coherent axion field generated by the earth nucleons induces an extra contribution to the anomalous precession frequency of the muon explaining the discrepancy with respect to the SM prediction.

Lepton-Flavoured Scalar Dark Matter in Dark Minimal Flavour Violation

We study a simplified model of lepton-flavoured complex scalar dark matter set up in the Dark Minimal Flavour Violation framework. In this model the Standard Model is extended by a scalar dark matter flavour triplet and a charged fermionic mediator, through which dark matter couples to the right-handed charged leptons of the Standard Model. This interaction is parameterized by a new $3\times 3$ coupling matrix $λ$. Consistent with the field content of the model, also the Standard Model's approximate flavour symmetry is extended to include an additional global $U(3)$ associated with the dark matter flavour triplet. In addition to the Standard Model Yukawa couplings, the new coupling matrix $λ$ is assumed to constitute the only source that violates this extended symmetry. We analyse the parameter space of this model by investigating constraints from collider searches, lepton flavour violating decays, the observed dark matter relic density, and direct as well as indirect dark matter detection experiments. By performing a combined analysis of all constraints we find that restrictions from lepton flavour violating decays, the observed relic density and dark matter nucleon scattering are dominant. The combination of the latter two renders limits from collider searches irrelevant while indirect detection constraints are weak due to a $p$-wave suppression of the annihilation rate. We conclude that lepton-flavoured scalar dark matter has a rich phenomenology and is a viable dark matter candidate.

The Boring Monopole

We study false vacuum decays catalysed by magnetic monopoles which act as tunnelling sites with exponentially enhanced decay rates. The field profiles describing the decay do not have the typically assumed $O(3)/O(4)$ symmetry, thus requiring an extension of the usual decay rate calculation. To numerically determine the saddle point solutions which describe the tunnelling process we use a new algorithm based on the mountain pass theorem. This method can be applied more widely to phase transitions with reduced symmetry, such as decays away from the zero and infinite temperature limits. Our results show that monopole-catalysed tunnelling can dominate over the homogeneous false vacuum decay for a wide range of parameters, significantly modify the gravitational wave signal or trigger phase transitions which would otherwise never complete. A single boring monopole in our Hubble patch may determine the lifetime of the Standard Model vacuum.

Axion Couplings in Grand Unified Theories

We show that the couplings of axions to gauge bosons are highly restricted in Grand Unified Theories where the standard model is embedded in a simple 4D gauge group. The topological nature of these couplings allows them to be matched from the UV to the IR, and the ratio of the anomaly with photons and gluons for any axion is fixed by unification. This implies that there is a single axion, the QCD axion, with an anomalous coupling to photons. Other light axion-like particles can couple to photons by mixing through the QCD axion portal and lie to the right of the QCD line in the mass-coupling plane. Axions which break the unification relation between gluon and photon couplings are necessarily charged under the GUT gauge group and become heavy from perturbative mass contributions. A discovery of an axion to the left of the QCD line can rule out simple Grand Unified models. Axion searches are therefore tabletop and astrophysical probes of Grand Unification.

Some open questions in axion theory

This white paper collects some open questions in several different aspects of axion theories. The questions are related to quantization of axion couplings, axion-magnetic monopole systems, axions in quantum gravity theory, axion string/domain wall systems, and thermal friction from axion couplings. They demonstrate many opportunities for axion theory, which call for more studies.
