Doubly-scaled planar $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM & Carroll Holography

In their seminal paper, Okuda and Penedones (OP) put forward an intriguing proposal towards holography in asymptotically flat spacetimes (AFS). They showed that the flat space limit of 4 point bosonic tree-level string amplitude in AdS$_{5}\, \times\, S^{5}$ is dual to a specific double scaling limit of 4 point correlator in four dimensional (4d) $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. In this paper, we show that the resulting boundary correlators can be used to define a 4d Carrollian conformal field theory (CFT) on future null infinity. This is done by mapping the set of doubly scaled correlators in SYM to null infinity, the conformal boundary of AFS. A Carroll CFT thus emerges in the infinite 't Hooft coupling limit of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM. We extend the OP analysis to higher point functions and show how the Gram conditions on flat space amplitude put constraints on the double scaling limit of SYM correlators. We then use the soft factorization theorem for dilatonic string amplitude to write a recursion relation for the $({1}/{2})$-BPS sector of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM in the double scaling limit. Finally, we show that the essential ideas underlying such a double scaling limit can be used as a tool-kit to build a class of Carrollian correlators, and hence define a Carrollian CFT, via certain integral transforms of flat space amplitudes of non-gravitational effective field theories.

The Carrollian Kaleidoscope

The Carroll group arises in the vanishing speed of light limit of the Poincaré group and was initially discarded as just a mathematical curiosity. However, recent developments have proved otherwise. Carroll and conformal Carroll symmetries are now ubiquitous, appearing in diverse physical phenomena starting from condensed matter physics to quantum gravity. This review aims to provide the reader a gateway into this fast-developing field. After an introduction and setting the stage with basics of the symmetry in question, we detail the construction of Carrollian and Carrollian Conformal field theories (CCFT). We then focus on applications. By far the most popular of these applications is in the context of the construction of holography in asymptotically flat spacetimes (AFS) in terms of a co-dimension one dual CCFT. We review the early work on AFS$_3$ /CCFT$_2$ before delving into an in-depth analysis for the construction of the dual to 4D AFS. Two other important sets of applications are in hydrodynamics and in condensed matter physics, which we discuss in detail. Carroll hydrodynamics is introduced as the $c\to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics first and then reconstructed from a symmetry based approach. Relations to ultrarelativistic flows and connections to the quark-gluon plasma are discussed with concrete examples of the Bjorken and Gubser flow models. In condensed matter applications, we cover connections to fractons, flat bands, and phase separation in Luttinger liquid models. To conclude, we give very brief outlines of other topics of interest including string theory and black hole horizons.

Carrollian holographic duals are non-local

Mapping the $S$-matrix of a generic theory of flat space gravity coupled to matter to correlation functions of a putative Carrollian dual, we show that bulk interactions imply boundary non-locality.

A finite Carrollian critical point

We construct examples of renormalizable Carrollian theories with finite effective central charge and non-trivial dynamics. These include critical points that are not scale-invariant but rather exhibit hyperscaling violation. All of our examples are mildly non-Lagrangian, in that they arise from suitable $N\to 0$ limits of Carrollian theories with $N$-component fields, including limits of Carrollian vector models and non-abelian gauge theories. We discuss implications for flat space holography, highlighting challenges in realizing Carrollian duals to gravitational theories.

Inflationary non-Gaussianities in alpha vacua and consistency with conformal symmetries

We study the conformal invariance of inflationary non-Gaussianities associated with scalar fluctuations in a non-Bunch-Davies initial state, known as the $α$-vacuum, in single-field slow-roll inflation. The $α$-vacuum is a one-parameter family of states, including the Bunch-Davies one, that preserves the conformal symmetry of inflationary dynamics in a nearly de-Sitter space-time. Working within the leading slow-roll approximation, we compute the four-point scalar correlator (the trispectrum) in $α$-vacuum using the in-in formalism. We check that the conformal Ward identities are met between the three and four-point scalar $α$-vacua correlators. Surprisingly, this contrasts the previously reported negative result of the Ward identities being violated between the two and the three-point correlators. We have also extended the wave-functional method, previously used for correlators with Bunch-Davies initial condition, to compute the three and four-point scalar correlators in $α$-vacua. The results obtained from the wave-function method match the corresponding in-in results, adding further justification to our check of Ward identities with $α$-vacua correlators.

3D Stress Tensor for Gravity in 4D Flat Spacetime

Three dimensional (3d) Carrollian CFTs are potential co-dimension one holographic duals of 4d asymptotically flat spacetimes that live on the whole of the null boundary. In this paper, we show that the local stress tensor of the 3d Carrollian conformal theory (without any additional sources) constructed in terms of the geometric structure at asymptotic null infinity naturally encodes both the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems. We relate the 3d Carroll stress tensor to the 2d Celestial one and show how the 3d version naturally localises the non-local 2d Celestial stress tensor. We also comment on the relation with stress tensors in relativistic 3d CFTs and connections to the flat limit of AdS/CFT.

Iyer-Wald ambiguities and gauge covariance of Entropy current in Higher derivative theories of gravity

In [arXiv:2105.06455, arXiv:2206.04538], the authors have been able to argue for an ultra-local version of the second law of black hole mechanics, for arbitrary diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity non-minimally coupled to matter fields, by constructing an entropy current on the dynamical horizon with manifestly positive divergence. This has been achieved by working in the horizon-adapted coordinate system. In this work, we show that the local entropy production through the divergence of the entropy current is covariant under affine reparametrizations that leave the gauge of horizon-adapted coordinates invariant. We explicitly derive a formula for how the entropy current transforms under such coordinate transformations. This extends the analysis of [arXiv:2204.08447] for arbitrary diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity non-minimally coupled to matter fields. We also study the Iyer-Wald ambiguities of the covariant phase formalism that generically plague the components of the entropy current.

Holography in Flat Spacetimes: the case for Carroll

We compare and contrast the two approaches of holography in asymptotically flat spacetimes, viz. the co-dimension two Celestial approach based on the Mellin transformation and the co-dimension one Carrollian approach based on the modified Mellin and elucidate how some of the problems of the Celestial approach can be rectified by the Carrollian one. Considering flat holography as a limit from AdS/CFT makes a co-dimension one dual more plausible, and our previous construction of Carrollian correlations from AdS Witten diagrams is testimony to this. In this paper, we show how to generalize our earlier analysis for operators with spin. We work out a large number of explicit non-trivial examples (twelve) and show matching between the limit of AdS$_4$ Witten diagrams and 3d boundary symmetry considerations, thus making the case for the Carrollian dual even stronger.

Entropy-current for dynamical black holes in Chern-Simons theories of gravity

We construct an entropy current and establish a local version of the classical second law of thermodynamics for dynamical black holes in Chern-Simons (CS) theories of gravity. We work in a chosen set of Gaussian null coordinates and assume the dynamics to be small perturbations around the Killing horizon. In explicit examples of both purely gravitational and mixed gauge gravity CS theories in $(2+1)$ and $(4+1)$-dimensions, the entropy current is obtained by studying the off-shell structure of the equations of motion evaluated on the horizon. For the CS theory in $(2+1)$ dimensions, we argue that the second law holds to quadratic order in perturbations by considering it as a low energy effective field theory with the leading piece given by Einstein gravity. In all such examples, we show that the construction of entropy current is invariant under the reparameterization of the null horizon coordinates. Finally, extending an existing formalism for diffeomorphism invariant theories, we construct an abstract proof for the linearised second law in arbitrary Chern-Simons theories in any given odd dimensions by studying the off-shell equations of motion. As a check of consistency, we verify that the outcome of this algorithmic proof matches precisely with the results obtained in explicit examples.

Generalized Second Law for Non-minimally Coupled Matter Theories

We prove the generalized second law (GSL) for higher curvature gravity theories when the matter sector is non-minimally coupled. The validity of our proof is in the regime of linearized fluctuations about equilibrium black holes, which is the same regime as considered in the previous proofs by Wall and Sarkar. These proofs were provided in different gravity theories - for instance, Lovelock theory and higher curvature gravity - but the matter sector was always taken to be minimally coupled. In this article, we describe how to generalize the proof of linearized semi-classical GSL when the matter sector comes with non-minimal couplings. The proof proceeds by suitably evaluating the matter path integral in the stress tensor expectation value by treating the higher derivative couplings in an effective field theory setting. We use the recently established result of the linearized second law for such theories.

AdS Witten Diagrams to Carrollian Correlators

Carrollian Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have been proposed as co-dimension one holographic duals to asymptotically flat spacetimes as opposed to Celestial CFTs which are co-dimension two. In this paper, drawing inspiration from Celestial holography, we show by a suitable generalisation of the flat space limit of AdS that keeps track of the previously disregarded null direction, one can reproduce Carrollian CFT correlation functions from AdS Witten diagrams. In particular, considering Witten diagrams in AdS4, we reproduce two and three-point correlation functions for three dimensional Carrollian CFTs in the so-called delta-function branch. Along the way, we construct non-trivial Carrollian three-point functions in the delta-branch by considering a collinear limit. We also obtain a generalised anti-podal matching condition that now depends on the retarded time direction.

Non-minimal coupling of scalar and gauge fields with gravity: an entropy current and linearized second law

This work extends the proof of a local version of the linearized second law involving an entropy current with non-negative divergence by including the arbitrary non-minimal coupling of scalar and $U(1)$ gauge fields with gravity. In recent works, the construction of entropy current to prove the linearized second law rested on an important assumption about the possible matter couplings to gravity: the corresponding matter stress tensor was assumed to satisfy the null energy conditions. However, the null energy condition can be violated, even classically, when the non-minimal coupling of matter fields to gravity is considered. Considering small dynamical perturbations around stationary black holes in diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity with non-minimal coupling to scalar or gauge fields, we prove that an entropy current with non-negative divergence can still be constructed. The additional non-minimal couplings that we have incorporated contribute to the entropy current, which may even survive in the equilibrium limit. We also obtain a spatial current on the horizon apart from the entropy density in out-of-equilibrium situations. We achieve this by using a boost symmetry of the near horizon geometry, which constraints the off-shell structure of a specific component of the equations of motion with newer terms due to the non-minimal couplings. The final expression for the entropy current is $U(1)$ gauge-invariant for gauge fields coupled to gravity. We explicitly check that the entropy current obtained from our abstract arguments is consistent with the expressions already available in the literature for specific model theories involving non-minimal coupling of matter with higher derivative theories of gravity. Finally, we also argue that the physical process version of the first law holds for these theories with arbitrary non-minimal matter couplings.

An entropy current and the second law in higher derivative theories of gravity

We construct a proof of the second law of thermodynamics in an arbitrary diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity working within the approximation of linearized dynamical fluctuations around stationary black holes. We achieve this by establishing the existence of an entropy current defined on the horizon of the dynamically perturbed black hole in such theories. By construction, this entropy current has non-negative divergence, suggestive of a mechanism for the dynamical black hole to approach a final equilibrium configuration via entropy production as well as the spatial flow of it on the null horizon. This enables us to argue for the second law in its strongest possible form, which has a manifest locality at each space-time point. We explicitly check that the form of the entropy current that we construct in this paper exactly matches with previously reported expressions computed considering specific four derivative theories of higher curvature gravity. Using the same set up we also provide an alternative proof of the physical process version of the first law applicable to arbitrary higher derivative theories of gravity.
