From Native Memes to Global Moderation: Cross-Cultural Evaluation of Vision-Language Models for Hateful Meme Detection

Cultural context profoundly shapes how people interpret online content, yet vision-language models (VLMs) remain predominantly trained through Western or English-centric lenses. This limits their fairness and cross-cultural robustness in tasks like hateful meme detection. We introduce a systematic evaluation framework designed to diagnose and quantify the cross-cultural robustness of state-of-the-art VLMs across multilingual meme datasets, analyzing three axes: (i) learning strategy (zero-shot vs. one-shot), (ii) prompting language (native vs. English), and (iii) translation effects on meaning and detection. Results show that the common ``translate-then-detect'' approach deteriorate performance, while culturally aligned interventions - native-language prompting and one-shot learning - significantly enhance detection. Our findings reveal systematic convergence toward Western safety norms and provide actionable strategies to mitigate such bias, guiding the design of globally robust multimodal moderation systems.

RadJEPA: Radiology Encoder for Chest X-Rays via Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture

Vision-language pretraining has driven progress in medical image representation learning, but it depends on paired image-text data and can inherit reporting bias from clinical narratives. We study whether language-free predictive pretraining can produce an image encoder that transfers effectively to radiology report generation. RadJEPA is a chest-X-ray adaptation of I-JEPA, pretrained on approximately 840K unlabeled radiographs using latent context-to-target prediction. Our primary contribution is an extensive empirical evaluation of this language-free encoder for report generation: the frozen image encoder is coupled to a trainable two-layer projector and language decoder, and is also substituted into four established vision-language backbones. Across MIMIC-CXR and IU-Xray, RadJEPA matches or exceeds the evaluated image-only and image-text baselines on lexical, entity-relation, and clinical-label metrics. Controlled MIMIC-only comparisons provide evidence that the predictive objective contributes beyond domain-specific pretraining, while broader comparisons also reflect differences in pretraining data, model capacity, and input resolution. Complementary classification and segmentation experiments assess transfer beyond report generation.

XGUARD: A Graded Benchmark for Evaluating Safety Failures of Large Language Models on Extremist Content

Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate content spanning ideological rhetoric to explicit instructions for violence. However, existing safety evaluations often rely on simplistic binary labels (safe and unsafe), overlooking the nuanced spectrum of risk these outputs pose. To address this, we present XGUARD, a benchmark and evaluation framework designed to assess the severity of extremist content generated by LLMs. XGUARD includes 3,840 red teaming prompts sourced from real world data such as social media and news, covering a broad range of ideologically charged scenarios. Our framework categorizes model responses into five danger levels (0 to 4), enabling a more nuanced analysis of both the frequency and severity of failures. We introduce the interpretable Attack Severity Curve (ASC) to visualize vulnerabilities and compare defense mechanisms across threat intensities. Using XGUARD, we evaluate six popular LLMs and two lightweight defense strategies, revealing key insights into current safety gaps and trade-offs between robustness and expressive freedom. Our work underscores the value of graded safety metrics for building trustworthy LLMs.
