Regularising the JNW and JMN naked singularities

We extend the method of Simpson and Visser (SV) of regularising a black hole spacetime, to cases where the initial metric represents a globally naked singularity. We choose two particular geometries, the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) metric representing the solution of an Einstein-scalar field system, and the Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN) metric that represents the asymptotic equilibrium configuration of a collapsing star supported by tangential pressures as the starting configuration. We illustrate several novel features for the modified versions of the JNW and JMN spacetimes. In particular, we show that, depending on the values of the parameters involved the modified JNW metric may represents either a two way traversable wormhole or it may retain the original naked singularity. On the other hand, the SV modified JMN geometry is always a wormhole. Particle motion and observational aspects of these new geometries are investigated and are shown to posses interesting features. We also study the quasinormal modes of different branches of the regularised spacetime and explore their stability properties.

Aspects of entanglement in non-local field theories with fractional Laplacian

In recent years, various aspects of theoretical models with long range interactions have attracted attention, ranging from out-of-time-ordered correlators to entanglement. In the present paper, entanglement properties of a simple non-local model with long-range interactions in the form of a fractional Laplacian is investigated in both static and a quantum quench scenario. Logarithmic negativity, which is a measure for entanglement in mixed states is calculated numerically. In the static case, it is shown that the presence of long-range interaction ensures that logarithmic negativity decays much slower with distance compared to short-range models. For a sudden quantum quench, the temporal evolution of the logarithmic negativity reveals that, in contrast to short-range models, logarithmic negativity exhibits no revivals for long-range interactions for the time intervals considered. To further support this result, a simpler measure of entanglement, namely the entanglement entropy is also studied for this class of models.

On subregion action complexity in AdS$_3$ and in the BTZ black hole

We analytically compute subsystem action complexity for a segment in the BTZ black hole background up to the finite term, and we find that it is equal to the sum of a linearly divergent term proportional to the size of the subregion and of a term proportional to the entanglement entropy. This elegant structure does not survive to more complicated geometries: in the case of a two segments subregion in AdS$_3$, complexity has additional finite contributions. We give analytic results for the mutual action complexity of a two segments subregion.

On the time dependence of holographic complexity in a dynamical Einstein-dilaton model

We study the holographic "complexity=action'" (CA) and "complexity=volume" (CV) proposals in Einstein-dilaton gravity in all spacetime dimensions. We analytically construct an infinite family of black hole solutions and use CA and CV proposals to investigate the time evolution of the complexity. Using the CA proposal, we find dimensional dependent violation of the Lloyd bound in early as well as in late times. Moreover, depending on the parameters of the theory, the bound violation relative to the conformal field theory result can be tailored in the early times as well. In contrast to the CA proposal, the CV proposal in our model yields results similar to those obtained in the literature.

On subregion holographic complexity and renormalization group flows

We investigate subregion holographic complexity in the context of renormalization group flow geometries. We use both the Poincaŕe slicing and the Janus ansatz as holographic duals to renormalization group flows in the boundary conformal field theory. In the former metric, subregion complexity is computed for a disc and a strip shaped entangling region. For the disc shaped region, consistent emergence of length scales for flow to the deep infra-red is established. For strip shaped regions, we find that complexity cannot locate holographic phase transitions in a sharp domain wall scenario. For smooth domain walls, we find that the complexity might be an indicator of such phase transitions, and give numerical evidence that its derivative changes sign across a transition. Finally, the complexity is computed numerically using the Janus ansatz.

On Holographic Rényi Entropy in Some Modified Theories of Gravity

We perform a detailed analysis of holographic entanglement Rényi entropy in some modified theories of gravity with four dimensional conformal field theory duals. First, we construct perturbative black hole solutions in a recently proposed model of Einsteinian cubic gravity in five dimensions, and compute the Rényi entropy as well as the scaling dimension of the twist operators in the dual field theory. Consistency of these results are verified from the AdS/CFT correspondence, via a corresponding computation of the Weyl anomaly on the gravity side. Similar analyses are then carried out for three other examples of modified gravity in five dimensions that include a chemical potential, namely Born-Infeld gravity, charged quasi-topological gravity and a class of Weyl corrected gravity theories with a gauge field, with the last example being treated perturbatively. Some interesting bounds in the dual conformal field theory parameters in quasi-topological gravity are pointed out. We also provide arguments on the validity of our perturbative analysis, whenever applicable.

A Note on Subregion Holographic Complexity

The volume inside a Ryu-Takayanagi surface has been conjectured to be related to the complexity of subregions of the boundary field theory. Here, we study the behaviour of this volume analytically, when the entangling surface has a strip geometry. We perform systematic expansions in the low and high temperature regimes for AdS-Schwarzschild and RN-AdS black holes. In the latter regime, we point out spurious divergences that might occur due to the limitations of a near horizon expansion. A similar analysis is performed for extremal black holes, and at large charge, we find that there might be some new features of the volume as compared to the area. Finally, we numerically study a four dimensional RN-AdS black hole in global AdS, the entangling surface being a sphere. We find that the holographic complexity captures essentially the same information as the entanglement entropy, as far as phase transitions are concerned.

Information Geometry in Time Dependent Quantum Systems and the Geometric Phase

We study information theoretic geometry in time dependent quantum mechanical systems. First, we discuss global properties of the parameter manifold for two level systems exemplified by i) Rabi oscillations and ii) quenching dynamics of the XY spin chain in a transverse magnetic field, when driven across anisotropic criticality. Next, we comment upon the nature of the geometric phase from classical holonomy analyses of such parameter manifolds. In the context of the transverse XY model in the thermodynamic limit, our results are in contradiction to those in the existing literature, and we argue why the issue deserves a more careful analysis. Finally, we speculate on a novel geometric phase in the model, when driven across a quantum critical line.

Black Hole Phase Transitions and the Chemical Potential

In the context of extended phase space thermodynamics and the AdS-CFT correspondence, we consider the chemical potential ($μ$) dual to the number of colours ($N$) of the boundary gauge theory, in the grand canonical ensemble. By appropriately defining $μ$ via densities of thermodynamic quantities, we show that it changes sign precisely at the Hawking-Page transition for AdS-Schwarzschild and RN-AdS black holes in five dimensions, signalling the onset of quantum effects at the transition point. Such behaviour is absent for non-rotating black holes in four dimensions. For Kerr-AdS black holes in four and five dimensions, our analysis points to the fact that $μ$ can change sign in the stable black hole region, i.e above the Hawking-Page transition temperature, for a range of angular frequencies. We also analyse AdS black holes in five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and find similar features for $μ$ as in the Kerr-AdS case.

Tidal Forces in Naked Singularity Backgrounds

The end stage of a gravitational collapse process can generically result in a black hole or a naked singularity. Here we undertake a comparative analysis of the nature of tidal forces in these backgrounds. The effect of such forces is generically exemplified by the Roche limit, which predicts the distance within which a celestial object disintegrates due to the tidal effects of a second more massive object. In this paper, using Fermi normal coordinates, we numerically compute the Roche limit for a class of non-rotating naked singularity backgrounds, and compare them with known results for Schwarzschild black holes. Our analysis indicates that there might be substantially large deviations in the magnitudes of tidal forces in naked singularity backgrounds, compared to the black hole cases. If observationally established, these can prove to be an effective indicator of the nature of the singularity at a galactic centre.

Scalar Radiation in the Background of a Naked Singularity

We study scalar radiation spectra from a particle in circular orbit, in the background of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity. The differences in the nature of the spectra, from what one obtains with a Schwarzschild black hole, is established. We also compute the angular distribution of the spectra.

Information Geometry and Quantum Phase Transitions in the Dicke Model

We study information geometry of the Dicke model, in the thermodynamic limit. The scalar curvature $R$ of the Riemannian metric tensor induced on the parameter space of the model is calculated. We analyze this both with and without the rotating wave approximation, and show that the parameter manifold is smooth even at the phase transition, and that the scalar curvature is continuous across the phase boundary.

Localization of Dirac-like excitations in graphene in the presence of smooth inhomogeneous magnetic fields

The present article discusses magnetic confinement of the Dirac excitations in graphene in presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In the first case a magnetic field directed along the z axis whose magnitude is proportional to $1/r$ is chosen. In the next case we choose a more realistic magnetic field which does not blow up at the origin and gradually fades away from the origin. The magnetic fields chosen do not have any finite/infinite discontinuity for finite values of the radial coordinate. The novelty of the two magnetic fields is related to the equations which are used to find the excited spectra of the excitations. It turns out that the bound state solutions of the two-dimensional hydrogen atom problem are related to the spectra of graphene excitations in presence of the $1/r$ (inverse-radial) magnetic field. For the other magnetic field profile one can use the knowledge of the bound state spectrum of a two-dimensional cut-off Coulomb potential to dictate the excitation spectra of the states of graphene. The spectrum of the graphene excitations in presence of the inverse-radial magnetic field can be exactly solved while the other case cannot be. In the later case we give the localized solutions of the zero-energy states in graphene.

Information Geometry, Phase Transitions, and Widom Lines : Magnetic and Liquid Systems

We study information geometry of the thermodynamics of first and second order phase transitions, and beyond criticality, in magnetic and liquid systems. We establish a universal microscopic characterization of such phase transitions via the equality of correlation lengths $ξ$ in coexisting phases, where $ξ$ is related to the scalar curvature of the equilibrium thermodynamic state space. The 1-D Ising model, and the mean-field Curie-Weiss model are discussed, and we show that information geometry correctly describes the phase behavior for the latter. The Widom lines for these systems are also established. We further study a simple model for the thermodynamics of liquid-liquid phase co-existence, and show that our method provides a simple and direct way to obtain its phase behavior and the locations of the Widom lines. Our analysis points towards multiple Widom lines in liquid systems.
