Probing Neutron Star Equation of State Universality with Gravitational Waves

Current neutron star equation-of-state inferences assume that a common equation of state describes all neutron stars. However, {poorly understood dense-matter physics may give rise to distinct long-lived stellar subpopulations following different mass--tidal-deformability relations, invalidating this assumption. In this Letter, we demonstrate that next-generation gravitational-wave observatories enable neutron star equation-of-state universality to be transformed from an assumption into a testable hypothesis. By combining hierarchical Bayesian inference with a piecewise-polytropic parametrization of the neutron star equation of state, we establish a framework for testing equation-of-state universality with next-generation gravitational-wave observatories. We find that about 30 (50) loud binary neutron star mergers with network SNRs above 100 are sufficient to provide compelling evidence for departures from equation-of-state universality, even if only 20% (10%) of the population exhibits one of the representative non-universality parametrizations considered here.

Binary Black Hole inspirals cannot hide their eccentricity

The events detected by the LIGO Virgo KAGRA collaboration over a period of 10 years have yielded a treasure trove of signals from compact binary coalescences. None of these events have shown a confident signature of eccentricity. With upgrades to the existing network and potential next generation gravitational wave detectors, we will be able to see much further into the universe increasing the likelihood of detecting eccentric systems. We improve upon the phenomenological approach of providing eccentricity constraints using an effective chirp mass model in the time frequency domain. We introduce an improved pixel collection method along with a likelihood based sampling approach inspired by Bayesian parameter estimation. Our approach constructs a likelihood from the product of energies collected across different eccentric harmonics in the time frequency representation. This formulation enables coarse but meaningful constraints on orbital eccentricity. Additionally, we incorporate information from the energy ratios between eccentric harmonics, further refining the eccentricity estimates. We test our approach on 500 non spinning equal mass eccentric systems and demonstrate that we can constrain the eccentricity within 0.2 around the true value. Moreover, our approach can deliver these constraints in 5 minutes on a machine with 50 cores. These results demonstrate that our phenomenological approach provides fast and reasonably accurate eccentricity estimates, making it a promising tool for rapid gravitational wave data analysis.

Prospect of Constraining the EoS of Neutron Stars Using Post-Merger Signals

Post-merger gravitational-wave emission from a binary neutron star merger carries crucial information about the equation of state (EoS) of matter at high temperatures. Current gravitational wave detectors have limited sensitivities at post-merger frequencies in the range [1.5, 4] kHz. Therefore, valuable inferences can only be made after combining information from multiple (BNS) events. Criswell et al. [Phys. Rev. D 107, 043021 (2023)] carries out an injection study to infer the radius posterior for a $1.6 M_{\odot}$ NS by combining the information from injected BNS events via the hierarchical Bayesian inference (HBI) formulation. This formulation utilizes empirical relations that connect the peak frequency of the post-merger remnant with the chirp mass of the system, and the EoS proxy parameter $R_{1.6}$. In this work, we extend the HBI formulation to other EoS proxy parameters (i.e., the radius of (NS), $R_{1.X}$, with masses 1.2, 1.4, and 1.8 $M_{\odot}$) and combine the four $R_{1.X}$ posteriors through the piecewise polytropic EoS model to obtain measurable constraints on the EoS of the NS. We show that the NS radii can be constrained to within $\sim$1 km ( $\sim$0.55 km) assuming uniform (astrophysical) prior on $R_{1.X}$ for injections in the A+ noise. We also study systematic biases in the analysis coming from the limitations of empirical relations.

Framework for Multi-messenger Inference from Neutron Stars: Combining Nuclear Theory Priors

We construct an efficient parameterization of the pure neutron-matter equation of state (EoS) that incorporates the uncertainties from both chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) and phenomenological potential calculations. This parameterization yields a family of EoSs including and extending the forms based purely on these two calculations. In combination with an agnostic inner core EoS, this parameterization is used in a Bayesian inference pipeline to obtain constraints on the e os parameters using multi-messenger observations of neutron stars. We specifically considered observations of the massive pulsar J0740+6620, the binary neutron star coalescence GW170817, and the NICER pulsar J0030+0451. Constraints on neutron star mass-radius relations are obtained and compared. The Bayes factors for the different EoS models are also computed. While current constraints do not reveal any significant preference among these models, the framework developed here may enable future observations with more sensitive detectors to discriminate them.

Deep TOV to characterize Neutron Stars

Astrophysical observations, theoretical models, and terrestrial experiments probe different regions of neutron star (NS) interior. Therefore, it is essential to consistently combine the information from these sources. This analysis requires multiple evaluations of Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff equations which can become computationally expensive with a large number of observations. Further, multi-messenger astronomy requires rapid NS characterization via gravitational waves for efficient electromagnetic follow-up. In this work, we develop a novel neural network-based map from the EoS curve to the mass and radius of cold non-rotating NS. We estimate a speed-up of an order of magnitude when compared with the state-of-the-art RePrimAnd solver and an average error of 1e-3 when calculating the mass and radius of the neutron star. Additionally, we also develop neural network solvers for obtaining EoS curves from a physics conforming EoS model, FRZ$χ_{1.5}$. We utilize this efficient continuous map to measure the sensitivity of model parameters of FRZ$χ_{1.5}$ towards mass and radius. We show that 8 out of 18 parameters of this model are sensitive by at least three orders of magnitude higher than the remaining 10 parameters. This information will be useful in further speeding up, as well as probing the crucial parameter space, in the parameter estimation from astrophysical observations using this physics-conforming EoS model.

Including mode mixing in a higher-multipole model for gravitational waveforms from nonspinning black-hole binaries

As gravitational-wave (GW) observations of binary black holes are becoming a precision tool for physics and astronomy, several subdominant effects in the GW signals need to be accurately modeled. Previous studies have shown that neglecting subdominant modes in the GW templates causes an unacceptable loss in detection efficiency and large systematic errors in the estimated parameters for binaries with large mass ratios. Our recent work [Mehta et al., Phys. Rev. D 96, 124010 (2017)] constructed a phenomenological gravitational waveform family for nonspinning black-hole binaries that includes subdominant spherical harmonic modes $(\ell = 2, m = \pm 1)$, $(\ell = 3, m = \pm 3)$, and $(\ell = 4, m = \pm 4)$ in addition to the dominant quadrupole mode, $(\ell = 2, m=\pm 2)$. In this article, we construct analytical models for the ($\ell = 3, m = \pm 2$) and ($\ell = 4, m = \pm 3$) modes and include them in the existing waveform family. Accurate modeling of these modes is complicated by the mixing of multiple spheroidal harmonic modes. We develop a method for accurately modeling the effect of mode mixing, thus producing an analytical waveform family that has faithfulness >99.6%.

Genuinely Multidimensional Kinetic Scheme For Euler Equations

A new framework based on Boltzmann equation which is genuinely multidimensional and mesh-less is developed for solving Euler's equations. The idea is to use the method of moment of Boltzmann equation to operate in multidimensions using polar coordinates. The aim is to develop a framework which is genuinely multidimensional and can be implemented with different methodologies, no matter whether it is in finite difference, finite volume or finite element form. There is a considerable improvement in capturing shocks and other discontinuities. Also, since the method is multidimensional, the flow features are captured isotropically. The method is further extended to second order using 'Arc of Approach' concept. The framework is developed as a finite difference method (called as GINEUS) and is tested on the benchmark test cases. The results are compared against Kinetic Flux Vector Splitting Method.
