Chaotic Field Theory - a Sketch

Spatio-temporally chaotic dynamics of a classical field can be described by means of an infinite hierarchy of its unstable spatio-temporally periodic solutions. The periodic orbit theory yields the global averages characterizing the chaotic dynamics, as well as the starting semiclassical approximation to the quantum theory. New methods for computing corrections to the semiclassical approximation are developed; in particular, a nonlinear field transformation yields the perturbative corrections in a form more compact than the Feynman diagram expansions.

Spectrum of stochastic evolution operators: Local matrix representation approach

A matrix representation of the evolution operator associated with a nonlinear stochastic flow with additive noise is used to compute its spectrum. In the weak noise limit a perturbative expansion for the spectrum is formulated in terms of local matrix representations of the evolution operator centered on classical periodic orbits. The evaluation of perturbative corrections is easier to implement in this framework than in the standard Feynman diagram perturbation theory. The result are perturbative corrections to a stochastic analog of the Gutzwiller semiclassical spectral determinant computed to several orders beyond what has so far been attainable in stochastic and quantum-mechanical applications.

Trace formulas for stochastic evolution operators: Smooth conjugation method

The trace formula for the evolution operator associated with nonlinear stochastic flows with weak additive noise is cast in the path integral formalism. We integrate over the neighborhood of a given saddlepoint exactly by means of a smooth conjugacy, a locally analytic nonlinear change of field variables. The perturbative corrections are transfered to the corresponding Jacobian, which we expand in terms of the conjugating function, rather than the action used in defining the path integral. The new perturbative expansion which follows by a recursive evaluation of derivatives appears more compact than the standard Feynman diagram perturbation theory. The result is a stochastic analog of the Gutzwiller trace formula with the ``hbar'' corrections computed an order higher than what has so far been attainable in stochastic and quantum-mechanical applications.

Beyond the periodic orbit theory

The global constraints on chaotic dynamics induced by the analyticity of smooth flows are used to dispense with individual periodic orbits and derive infinite families of exact sum rules for several simple dynamical systems. The associated Fredholm determinants are of particularly simple polynomial form. The theory developed suggests an alternative to the conventional periodic orbit theory approach to determining eigenspectra of transfer operators.

Quantum Fluids and Classical Determinants

A "quasiclassical" approximation to the quantum spectrum of the Schroedinger equation is obtained from the trace of a quasiclassical evolution operator for the "hydrodynamical" version of the theory, in which the dynamical evolution takes place in the extended phase space $[q(t),p(t),M(t)] = [q_i, \partial_i S, \partial_i \partial_j S ]$. The quasiclassical evolution operator is multiplicative along the classical flow, the corresponding quasiclassical zeta function is entire for nice hyperbolic flows, and its eigenvalue spectrum contains the spectrum of the semiclassical zeta function. The advantage of the quasiclassical zeta function is that it has a larger analyticity domain than the original semiclassical zeta function; the disadvantage is that it contains eigenvalues extraneous to the quantum problem. Numerical investigations indicate that the presence of these extraneous eigenvalues renders the original Gutzwiller-Voros semiclassical zeta function preferable in practice to the quasiclassical zeta function presented here. The cumulant expansion of the exact quantum mechanical scattering kernel and the cycle expansion of the corresponding semiclassical zeta function part ways at a threshold given by the topological entropy; beyond this threshold quantum mechanics cannot resolve fine details of the classical chaotic dynamics.

Symbolic Dynamics and Markov Partitions for the Stadium Billiard

We investigate the Bunimovich stadium dynamics and find that in the limit of infinitely long stadium the symbolic dynamics is a subshift of finite type. For a stadium of finite length the Markov partitions are infinite, but the inadmissible symbol sequences can be determined exactly by means of the appropriate pruning front. We outline a construction of a sequence of finite Markov graph approximations by means of approximate pruning fronts with finite numbers of steps.
