Grain Boundary Defect Production during Successive Displacement Cascades on a Tungsten Surface

The interaction of radiation defects with grain boundaries (GBs) governs damage tolerance in refractory materials for extreme environments. Tungsten (W), a leading plasma-facing material for fusion, will be subjected to coupled ion and neutron irradiation that degrades both surface and bulk properties. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to examine defect evolution under successive 1 keV displacement cascades at a W surface in nano-bicrystals containing Sigma3 and Sigma5 symmetric tilt GBs. The free surface biases interstitial accumulation toward surface planes, reducing bulk interstitial populations, while vacancy saturation is driven by cascade overlap. When cascades indirectly interact with GBs, defect accumulation becomes strongly dependent on GB character. The higher energy Sigma5 boundary acts as a more effective defect sink for interstitials relative to the coherent Sigma3 boundary. This behavior arises from its larger interstitial segregation energy and enhanced strain field, which promote trapping via thermal migration and focused collision sequences. The deeper trap states of the Sigma5 GB suppress interstitial emission and limit recovery, whereas the shallower traps and mobile crowdion configurations in Sigma3 GBs enable dynamic defect recombination. These results highlight the critical role of GB structure and grain size in controlling radiation damage evolution in tungsten with behavior that applies broadly to refractory BCC metals.

Effect of matrix sparsity and quantum noise on quantum random walk linear solvers

We study the effects of quantum noise in hybrid quantum-classical solver for sparse systems of linear equations using quantum random walks, applied to stoquastic Hamiltonian matrices. In an ideal noiseless quantum computer, sparse matrices achieve solution vectors with lower relative error than dense matrices. However, we find quantum noise reverses this effect, with overall error increasing as sparsity increases. We identify invalid quantum random walks as the cause of this increased error and propose a revised linear solver algorithm which improves accuracy by mitigating these invalid walks.

Variational Quantum Linear Solver with Dynamic Ansatz

Variational quantum algorithms have found success in the NISQ era owing to their hybrid quantum-classical approach which mitigate the problems of noise in quantum computers. In our study we introduce the dynamic ansatz in the Variational Quantum Linear Solver for a system of linear algebraic equations. In this improved algorithm, the number of layers in the hardware efficient ansatz circuit is evolved, starting from a small and gradually increasing until convergence of the solution is reached. We demonstrate the algorithm advantage in comparison to the standard, static ansatz by utilizing fewer quantum resources and with a smaller quantum depth on average, in presence and absence of quantum noise, and in cases when the number of qubits or condition number of the system matrix are increased. The numbers of iterations and layers can be altered by a switching parameter. The performance of the algorithm in using quantum resources is quantified by a newly defined metric.

Migration of a Carbon Adatom on a Charged Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube

We find that negative charges on an armchair single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) can significantly enhance the migration of a carbon adatom on the external surfaces of SWCNTs, along the direction of the tube axis. Nanotube charging results in stronger binding of adatoms to SWCNTs and consequent longer lifetimes of adatoms before desorption, which in turn increases their migration distance several orders of magnitude. These results support the hypothesis of diffusion enhanced SWCNT growth in the volume of arc plasma. This process could enhance effective carbon flux to the metal catalyst.
