Technical Supplement Report on Full-Duplex FBMC/QAM MIMO Systems: Transceiver Design and Optimization

This technical report presents the design and analysis of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC)/QAM multi-user MISO systems. We describe the complete uplink and downlink signal processing chains and characterize the end-to-end effective channel, including inter-carrier interference, inter-symbol interference, intrinsic interference, and residual self-interference. We compare FBMC/QAM with CP-OFDM and FBMC/OQAM through the lens of the Balian-Low theorem, and analyze prototype filter choices (PHYDYAS, Type-I, and Type-II), including the interference power breakdown under MRT and ZF precoding. Furthermore, we present an online stochastic successive convex approximation framework for ergodic sum-rate maximization with closed-form power updates, and contrast it with offline Monte Carlo-based approaches. Simulation results demonstrate the BER and network spectral efficiency advantages of FBMC/QAM over CP-OFDM under residual carrier frequency offset.

Load Balanced ISAC Systems for URLLC Users

This paper presents an energy-efficient downlink cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) network that serves ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) users while simultaneously detecting a target. We propose a load-balancing algorithm that minimizes the total network power consumption; including transmit power, fixed static power, and traffic-dependent fronthaul power at the access points (APs) without degrading system performance. To this end, we formulate a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem and introduce an iterative joint power allocation and AP load balancing (JPALB) algorithm. The algorithm aims to reduce total power usage while meeting both the communication quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of URLLC users and the sensing QoS needed for target detection. Proposed JPALB algorithm for ISAC systems was simulated with maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoders. Simulation results show approximately 33% reduction in power consumption, using JPALB algorithm compared to a baseline with no load balancing, without compromising communication and sensing QoS requirements.

Target Detection for OTFS-Aided Cell-Free MIMO ISAC System

This letter focuses on enhancing target detection performance for a multi-user integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS)-aided cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology in high-speed vehicular environments. We propose a sensing-centric (SC) approach for target detection using communication signals with or without sensing signals. Power allocation is optimized to maximize the sensing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed SC scheme while ensuring a required quality-of-service (QoS) for the communication user equipment (UEs), and adhering to each access points (APs) power budget. Numerical results show that the proposed SC scheme vastly outperforms a communication-centric method that minimizes the total power consumed at the APs subject to the same constraints.

OTFS Channel Estimation And Data Detection Designs With Superimposed Pilots

This work proposes a superimposed pilot (SP)-based channel estimation and data detection framework for orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) scheme, wherein low-powered pilots are superimposed on to data symbols in the delay-Doppler domain. We propose two channel estimation and data detection designs for SP-OTFS systems which, unlike the existing OTFS designs, do not designate any slots for pilots, which improves their spectral efficiency (SE). The first SP design estimates channel by treating data as interference, which degrades its performance at high signal to noise ratio. The second SP design alleviates this problem by iterating between channel estimation and data detection. Both these designs detect data using message passing algorithm which exploits OTFS channel sparsity, and consequently has low computational complexity. We also derive a lower bound on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of the proposed designs, and maximize it by optimally allocating power between data and pilot symbols. We numerically validate the derived analytical results, and show that the proposed designs have superior SE than the two state-of-the-art OTFS channel estimation and data detection designs.

Low-Complexity ZF/MMSE Receivers for MIMO-OTFS Systems With Imperfect CSI

Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) scheme, which transforms a time and frequency selective channel into an almost non-selective channel in the delay-Doppler domain, establishes reliable wireless communication for high-speed moving devices. This work designs and analyzes low-complexity zero-forcing (LZ) and minimum mean square error (LM) receivers for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-OTFS systems with perfect and imperfect receive channel state information (CSI). The proposed receivers provide exactly the same solution as that of the conventional counterparts, and reduce the complexity by exploiting the doubly-circulant nature of the MIMO-OTFS channel matrix, the block-wise inverse, and Schur complement. We also derive, by exploiting the Taylor expansion and results from random matrix theory, a tight approximation of the post-processing signal-to-noise-plus-interference-ratio (SINR) expressions in closed-form for both LZ and LM receivers. We show that the derived SINR expressions, when averaged over multiple channel realizations, accurately characterize their respective bit error rate (BER) of both perfect and imperfect receive CSI. We numerically show the lower BER and lower complexity of the proposed designs over state-of-the-art exiting solutions.

Uplink Sum-Rate and Power Scaling Laws for Multi-User Massive MIMO-FBMC Systems

This paper analyses the performance of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) signaling in conjunction with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) in multi-user (MU) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Initially, closed form expressions are derived for tight lower bounds corresponding to the achievable uplink sum-rates for FBMC-based single-cell MU massive MIMO systems relying on maximum ratio combining (MRC), zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver processing with/without perfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). This is achieved by exploiting the statistical properties of the intrinsic interference that is characteristic of FBMC systems. Analytical results are also developed for power scaling in the uplink of MU massive MIMO-FBMC systems. The above analysis of the achievable sum-rates and corresponding power scaling laws is subsequently extended to multi-cell scenarios considering both perfect as well as imperfect CSI, and the effect of pilot contamination. The delay-spread-induced performance erosion imposed on the linear processing aided BS receiver is numerically quantified by simulations. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the close match between our analysis and simulations, and to illustrate and compare the performance of FBMC and traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based MU massive MIMO systems.
