Anisotropic anomalous Hall effect in distorted kagome GdTi3Bi4

Topological kagome magnets offer a rich landscape for exploring the intricate interplay of quantum interactions among geometry, topology, spin, and correlation. GdTi3Bi4 crystallizes in layered Ti based kagome nets intertwined with zigzag Gd chains along the a axis and orders antiferromagnetically below 15 K. Here, we present the temperature and field dependent electrical transport of GdTi3Bi4 in different directions. The material exhibits anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of 410 S cm-1 at 2 K for B parallel c and it is completely absent for B parallel a, despite the similar magnetization observed in both orientations. This behavior is quite contradictory, as anomalous Hall effect (AHE) typically scales with the magnetization. Through first principles calculations, it is demonstrated that in the presence of time reversal symmetry broken by the Gd 4f sublattice and spin orbit coupling, the magnetization direction controls the orbital mixing in the Ti t2g bands, relocating Berry curvature hot spots and producing the observed orientation selective AHC. The results establish GdTi3Bi4 as platform for investigating new avenues of AHE, such as directional AHE, and thus shed new light on the intricate coupling between magnetic and electronic structures, paving the way for exploring novel quantum phenomena.

Topological quantum materials: kagome, chiral, and square-net frameworks

Topological quantum materials have emerged as a frontier in condensed matter physics as well as in materials science, with intriguing electronic states that are robust to perturbations. Among the diverse structural motifs, kagome, chiral, and square-net structures offer a wide range of topological phases and physical phenomena. These include Dirac and Weyl fermions, nodal-line semimetals, flat bands, van Hove singularities, charge density waves, superconductivity, nontrivial Berry phase, nonlinear electrical and thermal transports. This review explores the distinct roles of geometry, symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and electron correlations in these three classes of materials. It also highlights how their crystallographic features give rise to unique electronic band structures, topologically protected states and different physical properties, which require high-quality-single crystals. The present discussion comprises recent experimental discoveries and identification of the synthesis routes of key materials within each framework. Finally, the review outlines the current challenges and future directions in the design and exploration of topological quantum materials.

Quantum oscillations revealing topological band in kagome metal ScV6Sn6

Compounds with kagome lattice structure are known to exhibit Dirac cones, flat bands, and van Hove singularities, which host numerous versatile quantum phenomena. Inspired by these intriguing properties, we investigate the temperature and magnetic field dependent electrical transports along with the theoretical calculations of ScV6Sn6, a nonmagnetic charge density wave (CDW) compound. At low temperatures, the compound exhibits Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations, which help to design the Fermi surface (FS) topology. This analysis reveals the existence of several small FSs in the Brillouin zone, combined with a large FS. Among them, the FS possessing Dirac band is a non-trivial and generates a non-zero Berry phase. In addition, the compound also shows the anomalous Hall-like behaviour up to the CDW with the CDW phase, ScV6Sn6 presents a unique material example of the versatile HfFe6Ge6 family and provides various promising opportunities to explore the series further.

Suppression of long-range ordering and multiferroicity in Sr-substituted Ba3-xSrxMnNb2O9 (x = 1 and 3)

Effects of Sr substitution at A-site in ordered perovskite Ba3-xSrxMnNb2O9 (x = 1 and 3) have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, magnetization, dielectric/magnetodielectric and neutron diffraction measurements. The parent compound Ba3MnNb2O9 having a large spin (S=5/2) is known to exhibit type-II multiferroic properties with quasi 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnetic ground state. A slight perturbation in exchange interaction due to substitution of smaller size isovalent ion at the A-site in Ba3-xSrxMnNb2O9 (x = 1 and 3) has been found to alter the ground states drastically and hence the multiferroicity. The crucial role of various fluctuations (quantum and/or thermal), weak lattice distortion induced by Sr-substitution and slight imbalance between different fluctuations in determining the ground states and the multiferroicity is discussed and compared with the results of smaller spin compounds (S = 1/2 or 1).

Linear magnetoelectric effect in the antiferromagnetic Sm2BaCuO5

We report the discovery of linear magnetoelectric effect in the well-known green phase compound, Sm2BaCuO5, which crystallizes in the centrosymmetric orthorhombic (Pnma) structure. Magnetization and specific heat measurements reveal the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of Cu2+ and Sm3+-ions moments at TN1 = 23 K and TN2 = 5 K, respectively. Applied magnetic field induces dielectric anomaly at TN1 whose magnitude increases with field, which results in significant (1.7%) magnetocapacitance effect. On the other hand, the dielectric anomaly observed in zero-applied magnetic field at TN2 shows a small (0.4%) magnetocapacitance effect. Interestingly, applied magnetic field induces an electric polarization below TN1 and the polarization varies linearly up to the maximum applied field of 9 T with the magnetoelectric coefficient {\alpha} ~ 4.4 ps/m, demonstrating high magnetoelectric coupling. Below TN2, the electric polarization decreases from 35 to 29 {\mu}C/m2 at 2 K and 9 T due to ordering of Sm-sublattice. The observed linear magnetoelectricity in Sm2BaCuO5 is explained using symmetry analysis.

Evidence of a cluster spin-glass state in the B-site disordered perovskite SrTi0.5Mn0.5O3

SrTi0.5Mn0.5O3 (STMO) is a chemically disordered perovskite having random distribution of Ti and Mn over 1b site. Striking discrepancies about the structural and magnetic properties of STMO demands detailed analysis which is addressed. To explore the magnetic ground state of STMO, static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied over a broad temperature range (2-300 K). The dc, ac magnetization show a cusp like peak at Tf ~ 14 K, which exhibits field and frequency dependence. The thermoremanent magnetization is characterized by using stretched exponential function and characteristic time suggests the existence of spin clusters. Also the other features observed in magnetic memory effect, muon spin resonance/rotation and neutron powder diffraction confirm the existence of cluster spin glass state in STMO, rather than the long range ordered ground state. Intriguingly, the observed spin relaxation can be attributed to the dilute magnetism due to non-magnetic doping at Mn-site and competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions resulting from the site disorder.
